Role of FDG PET/CT in Baastrup's disease.

Baastrup's disease is a benign condition, which presents as chronic low back pain. It is also known as "kissing spine syndrome" and refers to close approximation of adjacent spinous processes producing inflammation and back pain. This condition is often misdiagnosed, resulting in incorrect treatment and persistence of symptoms. Diagnosis of Baastrup's disease is verified with clinical examination and imaging studies. Conventionally, clinicians resort to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of spine rather than X-ray or computed tomography (CT) in the evaluation of back pain. MRI can additionally i

Baastrup's disease in the pediatric spine.

Baastrup's disease is an uncommon entity in the elderly spine and it is very rare in the pediatric age group. There are only few case reports in the literature containing Baastrup's disease in pediatric spine. Baastrup's disease is also known as kissing spine because the posterior spinous processes touch or "kiss" one another, characterized by enlarged posterior spinous projections with normal neuroforamina and normal spinal disk height. There are various pathological and etiological hypotheses behind Baastrup's disease. Backache is one of the most common causes of morbidity in these patients

EFFECTS OF X-RAY BEAM ANGLE AND GEOMETRIC DISTORTION ON WIDTH OF EQUINE THORACOLUMBAR INTERSPINOUS SPACES USING RADIOGRAPHY AND COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY-A CADAVERIC STUDY.

The widths of spaces between the thoracolumbar processi spinosi (interspinous spaces) are frequently assessed using radiography in sports horses; however effects of varying X-ray beam angles and geometric distortion have not been previously described. The aim of this prospective, observational study was to determine whether X-ray beam angle has an effect on apparent widths of interspinous spaces. Thoracolumbar spine specimens were collected from six equine cadavers and left-right lateral radiographs and sagittal and dorsal reconstructed computed tomographic (CT) images were acquired. Sequentia

Baastrup's Disease Is Associated with Recurrent of Sciatica after Posterior Lumbar Spinal Decompressions Utilizing Floating Spinous Process Procedures.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case-control study. PURPOSE: To determine whether kissing spine is a risk factor for recurrence of sciatica after lumbar posterior decompression using a spinous process floating approach. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Kissing spine is defined by apposition and sclerotic change of the facing spinous processes as shown in X-ray images, and is often accompanied by marked disc degeneration and decrement of disc height. If kissing spine significantly contributes to weight bearing and the stability of the lumbar spine, trauma to the spinous process might induce a breakdown of

Baastrup's disease (kissing spines syndrome): a pictorial review.

UNLABELLED: Excessive lordosis is a common finding and may produce mechanical pressure that causes repetitive strains of the interspinous ligament with subsequent degeneration and collapse. Baastrup's disease (kissing spine syndrome) is a term referring to close approximation of adjacent spinous processes due to degenerative changes of the spine. Baastrup's disease usually affects the lumbar spine, with L4-L5 being the most commonly affected level. There is higher occurrence at ages over 70 and no gender predilection. Symptoms include back pain with midline distribution that worsens during ext

Iatrogenic Baastrup's Syndrome: A Potential Complication Following Anterior Interbody Lumbar Spinal Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Baastrup's Syndrome is a condition that occurs when there is abnormal contact between two adjacent spinous processes resulting in back pain. An alteration in lumbar spinal alignment and/or adjacent segment compensatory motion is thought to be potential causative factors. The objective of this study was to present a case series of what appears to be iatrogenic Baastrup's Syndrome as a mid-to-late term complication following anterior lumbar interbody surgery. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of all patients undergoing anterior lumbar surgery for either fusion or d

Baastrup's disease: The kissing spine.

A 67-year-old male presented with a gradually progressive low back pain of 2 years duration. The patient was leading a retired life and there was no history of chronic fever or significant trauma. There was no radiation of pain or any features suggestive of claudication. There was no history of any comorbidity. The pain was aggravated with extension of the spine and relieved with flexion. There was no swelling or neurological deficit, but muscle spasm was present. Radiographs of the spine revealed degenerative changes in the lumbosacral spine, along with articulation of spinous processes at in

Microendoscopic Decompression Surgery for Lumbar Spinal Canal Stenosis via the Paramedian Approach: Preliminary Results.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a microendoscopic spinal decompression surgical technique using a novel approach for the treatment of lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS). The following modifications were made to the conventional microendoscopic bilateral decompression via the unilateral approach: the base of the spinous process was first resected partially to secure a working space, so as not to separate the spinous process from the lamina. The tip of the tubular retractor was placed at the midline of the lamina, where laminectomy was performed microendoscopically.

Dorsal spinous process impingement syndrome ('kissing spine') in a cat: imaging appearance and surgical management.

Spinal pain is an important clinical presentation in feline patients, but the underlying causes can often be difficult to elucidate. Dorsal spinous process impingement syndrome ('kissing spine' or in human patients 'Baastrup syndrome') is a significant cause of spinal pain in equine and human patients and radiographically is characterised by a close approximation of adjacent spinous processes with reactive bone sclerosis affecting these spinous processes. In this report we describe the first reported case of dorsal spinous process impingement syndrome in a cat causing spinal pain, and successf

Distances between thoracic spinous processes in Warmblood foals: a radiographic study.

REASON FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The aetiological factors behind impinged or overriding of dorsal spinous processes ('kissing spine syndrome', KSS) are not clearly understood. Back conformation, breed, age, training and gender may play important roles in this condition. Radiographic changes vary and abnormalities are seen in many clinically normal horses, but the conclusion of previous studies in mature horses is that interspinous spaces <4 mm are considered too narrow and potentially indicative of KSS. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether narrowing of the interspinous space was present in a populatio

Analysis of complications in patients treated with the X-Stop Interspinous Process Decompression System: proposal for a novel anatomic scoring system for patient selection and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: The X-Stop Interspinous Process Decompression System (St. Francis Medical Technologies, Concord, CA) is an interspinous device used with increasing frequency in the treatment of degenerative lumbar spine conditions. To date, limited data are available on complications observed in association with X-Stop procedures, and even less information exists on their underlying causes. The aim of this study was to analyze a series of complications occurring at a single institution and their potential causes and propose an anatomic scoring system that may help to classify patients and prevent c

Fluoroscopically-guided injections to treat "kissing spine" disease.

BACKGROUND: Any spine structure that is innervated by afferent nociceptive nerve fibers is a potential pain generator. In the lumbar spine, the most studied pain generators include: sacroiliac joints, the zygapophysial joints, the intervertebral discs, myofascial structures. Anomalous lumbosacral articulations, the spinous processes, and lumbar spine osteophytes are less commonly reported. OBJECTIVE: To describe the diagnostic and therapeutic features of "kissing spine" disease or Baastrup's Sign with particular attention to MRI findings and fluoroscopically-guided injection therapy. DESIGN:

Baastrup's disease (kissing spine) demonstrated by FDG PET/CT.

18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) is a widely used imaging modality in cancer patients. However, there are many potential non-neoplastic causes of FDG uptake. We report a case of FDG uptake between the spinous processes, secondary to Baastrup's disease. Knowledge of this pattern of uptake is helpful in diagnosing Baastrup's disease and avoiding false-positive diagnoses.

Effects of girth, saddle and weight on movements of the horse.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Although the saddle is seen as one of the biggest causes of back pain, and weightbearing is seen as an important aetiological factor in 'kissing spine' syndrome (KSS), the effects of a saddle and weight on the back movements of the horse have never been studied. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of pressure on the back, exerted by tack and weight, on movements of the horse. HYPOTHESIS: Weight has an extending effect on the horse's back and, as a compensatory mechanism to this extension, an alteration in pro- and retraction angles was expected. A similar but sm

[Diagnostic validity of palpation in horses with back problems].

There is a regularly high proportion of x-ray findings indicating a pathological deterioration of the equine vertebral column which do not correlate with the clinical symptoms. Therefore, palpation remains one of the most important clinical examination methods to determine whether or not a horse is suffering from back pain. The aim of this study was to check the validity of palpation results of horses with an assumed back problem. The palpation results of 167 horses were evaluated in retrospect: If the palpation proceeds under following conditions, positive palpation results agree with an prim
