Fifty-five collared peccaries (Tayassu tajacu) were collected from October 1988 through April 1991 from five counties within the Trans-Pecos region of Texas (USA) to monitor for diseases and parasites. No endoparasites were recovered on gross examination. Antibody to Borrelia burgdorferi was documented in one (2%) of 55 specimens. Three (6%) of 54 collared peccaries were positive for Yersinia pestis antibodies. All collared peccaries were negative for antibodies against Brucella spp., Francisella tularensis, Rickettsia rickettsii, and Rickettsia typhi. This is the first report of Borrelia sp.

The effects of doxycycline (DOX) and streptomycin (SM) treatment of Brucella melitensis infected mice on humoral immune response were examined. In female BALB/c mice, DOX was administered at a dose of 50 mg/kg/12 h, for 21 or 45 consecutive days, alone or combined with SM (10 mg/kg/12 h) for 14 days. All treatments induced a significant increase in specific IgG levels (ELISA and CIEP) against LPS and cytosolic antigens of Brucella during treatment. This was not related with therapeutic failure or relapse since all treatments induced a significant reduction in the degree of infection.

The activities of a short therapeutic regimen with azithromycin and the classic treatment doxycycline with streptomycin were compared and evaluated in mice infected with Brucella melitensis. In a chronic model, starting therapy 31 days after challenge, azithromycin (10 days, 50 mg/kg/day) significantly reduced the infection (2.9 logs, day 48 post-infection). The level of non-specific reactions found in the brucellosis serology of ruminants in New Zealand was very low until July 1992. This changed when, in an export consignment of 1071 deer, 35% reacted in the Brucella abortus tube agglutination test with titres varying from 50 to 200 IU. A clone from Brucella abortus 19 complemented an Escherichia coli strain deficient in phosphorylation of glucose. Open reading frames similar to E. coli mepA, glk, and genes encoding ATP-coupled exporters were found in the sequence. By DNA-DNA hybridization, we classified 26 human strains, 4 dog and cat strains, and 4 hamster strains putatively identified as Helicobacter cinaedi as well as 2 human strains and 2 animal strains of Helicobacter fennelliae. All but one human strain belonged to the same hybridization group as the type strain of H. cinaedi. The animal strains also appeared to belong to this hybridization group. Two cases with chronic anergic brucellosis are described. Both patients suffered repeated disease relapses and responded poorly to conventional treatment. Investigations were made to determine the causal agent of an acute outbreak of abortions recorded in a swine herd in Mozambique. Isolation of porcine parvovirus and demonstration of its specific antibodies accomplished by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, haemagglutination inhibition and immunofluorescent tests, indicated that porcine parvovirus was the causal agent of the abortions. Other pathogenic agents causing reproductive failure, e.g. pseudorabies virus, Leptospira or Brucella species, were ruled out because investigations of these agents proved to be negative.
