Congenital brucellosis in a preterm infant: A case report from France and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital brucellosis is a rare but serious transplacental infection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Brucellosis is a bacterial zoonosis, that has become extremely rare in France unlike many countries in the Mediterranean basin, where it remains endemic and is a cause of travel-related morbidity. We have reported the first case of neonatal brucellosis in France since 1990, involving a preterm infant born at 26 weeks with Brucella melitensis chorioamnionitis, due to mother-to-fetal transmission. A PubMed review (2000-2024) identified 13 additional neonatal cases. RESULTS: The mother had

(P)ppGpp synthase Rsh promotes persister cells formation by regulating sulfur metabolism mediated by sulfate reductase CysI in Brucella abortus.

Persister cells constitute a subpopulation of dormant cells that are transiently tolerant to antibiotics and associated with chronic infection. We have known (p)ppGpp synthetase Rsh promoted persister cells formation during rifampicin exposure in Brucella, but the metabolic regulation mechanism by which Rsh promotes persister cells formation is unknown. In this study, we firstly characterized the proteome and metabolome of persister cells formation during rifampicin exposure between B. abortus A19 (WT) and Δrsh strains. We found that sulfur metabolism-related protein (NAD(P)/FAD-dependent sulf

Antimicrobial activity of vinegar water in chilled chicken carcasses.

Very small poultry producers in West Virginia are very interested in learning the antimicrobial activities of commercial vinegar water during post-harvest broiler processing. We aimed to 1) evaluate the efficacy of vinegar water against pathogens and surrogate bacteria during the chilling of broiler carcasses, and 2) evaluate the anti-bacterial efficacy of 0, 50, and 75% vinegar water against surrogate bacteria during chilling at the Mobile Poultry Processing Unit (MPPU) pilot plant facility. In Study I, fresh organic broiler carcasses were inoculated with Salmonella Typhimurium, Campylobacter

Bioremediation of hexamine and formaldehyde using a radio-tolerant bacterial consortium for efficient pollutant and COD removal.

INTRODUCTION: Hexamine and its by-products (formaldehyde and ammonia) are classified as organic pollutants. Formaldehyde has antibacterial properties, while increased ammonia levels contribute to eutrophication, both of which disrupts microbial communities in aquatic ecosystems. Hexamine is considered a common pollutant released from various industries. METHODS: Culture based analysis in enriched medium resulted in development of bacterial consortium using environmental isolates. RESULTS: A consortium, containing six pure bacterial isolates {SRCHD03 & SRCHD04 (Brevundimonas diminuta), SRCHD0

Demyelinating Neurobrucellosis Presenting With Neuropsychiatric Manifestations.

Neurobrucellosis with psychiatric manifestations is an uncommon manifestation of brucellosis. Herein, we report a 31-year-old male complaining of dizziness, nausea, malaise, imbalance, amnesia, psychosis, delusion, and impulsive and disorganized behavior. He was not responsive to antipsychotic treatment, and his brain MRI showed demyelinating hyperintensity foci in the periventricular and paraventricular areas and the subcortical areas of the right temporal and frontal lobes. His serum and cerebrospinal fluid serology were in favor of brucellosis, and he dramatically responded to anti-Brucella

First report of the isolation, characterization, and genotyping of Brucella abortus biovar 9 in Brazil.

Brucellosis is a globally important zoonosis that causes significant economic and social losses due to its impact on livestock productivity and the risk of human infection. Given its importance, the characterization of field isolates at the species, biovar, and genotypic levels allows for the tracking of potential new sources of infection and the introduction of new strains into a given region or herd. This study aimed to phenotypically and genotypically characterize three field isolates of Brucella abortus biovar 9 and to sequence their genomes for public availability in a genomic database. T

Development and Evaluation of Multiple Droplet Digital PCR Method for Specific Detection and Differentiation of Brucella melitensis and Brucella abortus.

Brucellosis remains a major global public health concern, with B. melitensis and B. abortus being the primary causative agents in China. This study describes the development of a multiplex droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) assay for the simultaneous detection and differentiation of B. melitensis and B. abortus. The assay employs TaqMan probes targeting the bcsp31 gene (genus-specific), a transposase gene (B. melitensis-specific) and an autotransporter-associated beta strand repeat-containing protein gene (B. abortus-specific), each labeled with distinct fluorophores (FAM, HEX, ROX). The optimized as

Genome-wide comparison analysis of Brucella attenuated vaccine strain BA0711 and Brucella wild-type strain M28 and establishment of a duplex qPCR differentiation method.

Brucellosis, a zoonotic infectious disease caused by Brucella species, poses a serious threat to livestock production and public health. Vaccine immunization remains a key strategy to prevent and control the disease. This study aims to elucidate the genetic basis of virulence attenuation in the Brucella attenuated vaccine strain BA0711. We completed the whole-genome sequencing and functional annotation of the Brucella attenuated vaccine strain BA0711, and conducted a systematic genomic comparison with the Brucella wild-type strain M28. The results indicate that compared to the Brucella wild-ty

Brucella Omp25 activates the unfolded protein response to promote intracellular proliferation and inflammation.

Brucellosis is a widespread zoonotic disease caused by Brucella, a genus of facultative intracellular bacteria that infects livestock and humans. Brucella primarily replicates within the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of host cells, where it establishes a specialized replicative niche. This ER localization disrupts ER structure and induces ER stress. The unfolded protein response (UPR) is a critical cellular pathway that maintains ER homeostasis by restoring protein-folding capacity and regulating stress responses. However, how Brucella manipulates host UPR pathways to promote its intracellular su

A case report of cervical spine epidural abscess caused by brucellosis.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is an endemic zoonotic infection in Saudi Arabia, with thousands of cases reported annually. Although musculoskeletal involvement is common, spinal complications - particularly cervical spondylodiscitis with epidural abscess - are rare and often difficult to diagnose due to nonspecific symptoms. Delayed recognition may lead to neurological compromise requiring urgent intervention. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 55-year-old farmer with regular exposure to cattle and a history of brucellosis presented with progressive right-sided weakness and neck pain. Magnetic resonance imaging r

From tests to truth: A misclassification-aware machine learning framework for estimating brucellosis seroprevalence in wild canids.

Brucellosis is an important zoonotic disease affecting humans, livestock, and wildlife, yet prevalence estimates in wild species are often underestimated due to limited attention to surveillance, as well as insufficient and biased sampling. To clarify exposure patterns in wild canids, we searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO, and Google Scholar (1962-2025) for primary prevalence studies of Brucella species (spp.) in free-ranging canids. Serological data were analyzed using a misclassification-aware, multi-assay model that corrects for imperfect test sensitivity and specificity. Confi

Bovine brucellosis seropositivity in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, 2021-2024: Temporal, and spatial trends.

INTRODUCTION: Bovine brucellosis, caused primarily by Brucella abortus, remains a major constraint to livestock productivity and a persistent zoonotic threat. Although brucellosis is a controlled disease in South Africa, detailed subnational epidemiological evidence is limited, particularly for Mpumalanga Province. Understanding temporal, seasonal, and spatial patterns is essential for improving risk-based surveillance and control. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis was conducted using routine diagnostic records from the Mpumalanga Provincial Veterinary Laboratory

Diversity of culturable gut bacteria associated with brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) and their role in imidacloprid degradation.

The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), is a major pest of rice across Asia and has developed significant metabolic resistance to multiple insecticides. Microbiome-mediated insecticide resistance is of emerging interest in various insect pests, including N. lugens. In this study, we assessed the diversity of culturable gut bacteria in imidacloprid-susceptible (IMI-S) and imidacloprid-resistant (IMI-R) populations of N. lugens and their potential to degrade imidacloprid. Molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis identified 13 bacterial isolates, representing ten families fr

The ID Screen® Brucella suis Indirect ELISA is a valuable supplement for serological diagnosis of porcine brucellosis.

Brucellosis in domestic pigs, mainly caused by Brucella (B.) suis, has been eradicated in many European countries and the domestic pig population is monitored for freedom of disease by serological methods. However, antibodies cross-reacting with the prescribed smooth lipopolysaccharide (sLPS) diagnostic antigen, might lead to false positive serological results (FPSRs) due to antigen similarity with other bacteria, such as Yersinia species. Domestic pigs are frequently colonised with Y. enterocolitica. The ID Screen® Brucella suis Indirect ELISA, based on sLPS and rough LPS (rLPS) was developed

Successful Conservative Management of Complicated Brucella Endocarditis.

Brucella endocarditis (BE) is a rare but life-threatening complication of brucellosis and remains the principal cause of disease-related mortality. Prosthetic-valve involvement is exceptionally uncommon and is usually managed with combined medical and surgical therapy because of the high risk of abscess formation and embolic complications. We report a 51-year-old man with a bioprosthetic aortic valve who presented with recurrent fever, weight loss, and acute neurological deficits following previously treated, culture-confirmed brucellosis related to consumption of unpasteurized goat milk.
