A reduction in serum IFN-γ, IL-1β, IL-6, and GM-CSF serves as potential markers for a positive outcome to lumbar epidural steroid injections.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated serum inflammatory cytokine levels before and after transforaminal epidural steroid injections (TFESI) to assess their potential as biomarkers for predicting favorable outcomes in patients with lumbosacral radiculopathy. METHODS: All 120 eligible patients diagnosed with lumbosacral radiculopathy underwent blood collection 1) before TFESI and 2) two weeks after the procedure. A 5.0 mg dexamethasone mixture with local anesthetics was injected at each epidural level. This study defined a favorable response as a pain reduction of more than 50% at the 2-week foll

Is "routine" magnetic resonance imaging necessary in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis? A retrospective analysis in New Zealand.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of neural axis abnormalities (NAA) in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) undergoing deformity corrective surgery and evaluate factors that may predict the presence of underlying NAA in these patients. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: There is no clear consensus regarding the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to screen for potential NAA in patients with AIS. Various clinical and radiographic risk factors predicting underlying NAA have been suggested, but these remain controversial. METHODS: This study

Preoperative MRI Segmentation of Paraspinal Muscles Is Associated with Intraoperative Findings of Traumatic Brachial Plexus Injury.

Background Surgical decisions for traumatic brachial plexus injury (TBPI) depend on the severity of nerve root injury, especially total root avulsion and partial root avulsion, determined with MRI and intraoperative findings. However, the use of quantitative MRI indexes to distinguish normal roots, total root avulsion, and partial root avulsion remains to be explored. Purpose To develop a diagnostic system using paraspinal muscle volumetric segmentation in MRI assessments of TBPI. Materials and Methods In this single-center retrospective study, data from patients diagnosed with TBPI from Decem

Neurological Manifestations in Oropouche Virus Infection: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Oropouche virus (OROV), an emerging arbovirus, poses a significant public health concern in tropical and subtropical regions of Latin America, as well as in other parts of the world, with imported cases reported in North America and Europe. While OROV is primarily associated with acute febrile illness, especially emerging evidence suggests it may cause neurological complications, though these remain understudied. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to estimate the prevalence of neurological manifestations in OROV infections. Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a systematic literatur

Postoperative Rehabilitation for Pain and Functional Recovery Following Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion: A Narrative Review.

Patients with cervical myelopathy, radiculopathy, and myeloradiculopathy often experience neck and arm pain, neurological impairments, and functional limitations that significantly affect their quality of life. Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is the most commonly performed surgical procedure to address these conditions. In clinical practice, postoperative rehabilitation is widely recommended following ACDF to enhance recovery. However, the effectiveness of rehabilitation after ACDF remains inconclusive. This review aims to evaluate the efficacy of exercise-based rehabilitation p

Multidisciplinary management of cervical disc herniation in pregnancy: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Cervical disc herniation during pregnancy is a rare but clinically significant condition. While conservative management is generally preferred, progressive neurological symptoms may necessitate surgical intervention. When conservative management fails, a multidisciplinary approach is needed when considering surgical intervention to minimize risk to the mother and fetus. OBSERVATIONS: The authors present the case of a woman in her mid-30s at 24 weeks of gestation, conceived via in vitro fertilization, who developed progressively worsening left C7 radiculopathy refractory to conserv

Electroacupuncture induces analgesia by regulating spinal synaptic plasticity via the AMPA/NMDA receptor in a model of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy: secondary analysis of an experimental study in rats.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR) is characterized by neuropathic pain (NP). Although the analgesic effect of electroacupuncture (EA) has been widely recognized in clinical practice, the mechanism of EA in the treatment of CSR remains unknown. We previously reported that 7 days of EA improved behavioral markers of NP, attenuated increases in α-synuclein, synapsin 1 and 2, postsynaptic density (PSD)-95 and growth-associated protein (GAP)-43, and improved ultrastructural changes within synapses in a rat model of CSR. Herein, we present supplemental data from the same cohort of
