Intervertebral disc disease in the dog is a common problem in veterinary medicine. The clinician must understand the pathophysiology of disc extrusions so the owner can be informed properly when medical versus surgical treatment is indicated. Intervertebral disc surgery requires the same preoperative considerations as any other surgery would: knowledge of regional anatomy, proper equipment, and good surgical techniques and tissue handling. The spinal cord is an unforgiving structure, forcing the surgeon to understand and to avoid intraoperative complications. Some complications are inevitable.

The paper has been aimed at searching for the correlation between neck and arm pain and low back pain to test the rate of concomitance of both disorders and the order of their appearance. The studies have been carried out in two big light industry plants in Lódź. The coexistence of the pain syndromes has been found to be frequent, low back pain usually developing first. It seems that the occurrence of one of those disorders disturbs the functioning of the whole vertebral column and thus predisposes to the development of the other one.

Thirty-eight annulus vacuums in 27 patients were analyzed with regard to location, configuration, and associated vertebral abnormalities such as degenerative changes, absent and compressed anterosuperior vertebral body corners, and annulus calcification. A case of postoperative cervical pseudomeningocele in a woman submitted to laminectomy for protruded disc is reported. The patient was investigated by myelography and metrizamide computed tomography and surgically treated with a good neurological result. The other eight reported cases of postoperative cervical pseudomeningocele are reviewed and the role of metrizamide CT scan in diagnosing this unusual complication of cervical laminectomies is emphasized.

UNLABELLED: The aim of the study was a comparison of the side-effects and efficacy of nalbuphine, piritramide, and placebo in patients during recovery from halothane anesthesia.
METHODS: Neurosurgical (vertebral surgery) and otolaryngological patients (surgery of face and neck) were operated under halothane anesthesia. Postoperatively 20 patients received 20 mg nalbuphine, 21 patients 15 mg piritramide, and 19 patients 0.9% NaCl for pain therapy in a randomized and double-blind manner. Respiratory function was monitored by blood gas analysis, hemodynamic function by noninvasive measurements.

Traumatic rotatory displacement (TRD) are defined as all slight anterior corporeal displacements (less than 1/3 of the vertebral body) secondary to different vectors, but with a constant and dominant rotatory component. The load-displacement behavior of 35 fresh adult cervical spine motion segments was measured in compression, shear, flexion, extension, lateral bending and axial torsion tests. Motion segments were tested both intact and with posterior elements removed. Applied forces ranged to 73.6 N in compression and to 39 N in shear, while applied moments ranged to 2.16 Nm. For each mode of loading, principal and coupled motions were measured and stiffnesses were calculated. The effect of disc degeneration on motion segment stiffnesses and the moments required for motion segment failure were also measured.

Between 1976 and 1983, 251 patients underwent surgery for the treatment of cervical degenerative disc disease. Anterior microsurgical discectomy at one or more cervical segments without interbody fusion was performed in each case. 109 patients with radiculopathy and 55 patients with myelopathy were followed up clinically 1 to 8 years postoperatively. Two hundred five patients with neck pain were evaluated clinically and roentgenographically for a minimum of 10 years after onset of symptoms. In 202 surgical cases of anterior fusion of cervical spine, there were 150 cases in which disc herniation was the responsible lesion. According to metrizamide CT (met. Twenty-two patients with epidural migration of cervical disc fragments were reviewed.
