Collagen stability and cross-linking in normal and kyphoscoliotic mouse intervertebral discs.

Intervertebral discs of the cervical-thoracic region of the spine of BDL mice which are homozygous for the ky gene mutation undergo degeneration. Discs from these mice have a normal collagen content and undergo normal collagen cross linking prior to the appearance of degenerative changes. The major reducible collagen cross-link formed in discs of these mice and in normal CBA strain mice is hydroxylysino-5-ketonorleucine. These results and other previous results indicate that the discs in the ky mouse develop degenerative disease due to an extrinsic factor rather than to an intrinsic abnormalit

[Instability of the cervical spine caused by arthrosis. An unusual form of degenerative spondylolisthesis].

A case of a patient with spondylolisthesis between C4 and C5 is reported. There were neurological signs of spinal cord involvement and the lesions were essentially those of a posterior degenerative arthrosis with disc degeneration at other levels. This severe instability was cured by an anterior interbody fusion.

Lhermitte's sign in multiple sclerosis: a clinical survey and review of the literature.

Lhermitte's sign was experienced by 33.3% of 114 patients with multiple sclerosis, and in 16% it occurred in the first episode. Eleven patients with subacute combined degeneration of the cord due to pernicious anaemia also were reviewed, and one reported Lhermitte's sign. Review of the literature suggests that the symptom rarely occurs in other conditions except subacute combined degeneration of the cord, neck trauma, radiation myelitis and prolapsed cervical disc.

[Roentgenological measurement of the cervical vertebral bodies in ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) and cervical spondylosis (CS) (author's transl)].

Many studies of the pathogenesis of ossification of posterior longitudinal ligaments (OPLL) have been reported, and both general and local factors have been pointed out. In case a longitudinal ligament is affected by both the general and local OPLL factors for many years, the shape and size of the cervical vertebral bodies and the arrangement of the cervical spinal column might be affected. The relation between OPLL and disc degeneration, the morphology of the facet joint and the change of longitudinal ligament tension has been reported by many authors. But the relation between OPLL and the sh

Relative preservation of lumbrical versus thenar motor fibres in neurogenic disorders.

At late stages of median nerve entrapment in the carpal tunnel there may be total denervation of the thenar muscles. Surface electrodes over the thenar endplate zone may record an initial and predominantly positive "M" response to supramaximal median nerve stimulation. By a combination of techniques, it has been established that this surface positive response originates from surviving lumbrical muscles innervated by the median nerve. Their relative preservation may be related to their location in the median nerve. Intraoperative investigations have shown that the thenar motor fibres are primar

Cloward's anterior fusion in the treatment of cervical spinal traumatic injury and degeneration.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of Cloward's anterior interbody fusion of the cervical spine and to identify the factors influencing them. The series consisted of 29 patients operated on in 1968--75. The indication for operation was in 12 cases intensive radicular symptoms, not responding to conservative treatment, in connection with considerable degeneration of the corresponding spinal segment only, and in 17 cases instability of the cervical spine caused by traumatic injury followed by dislocation and radicular or medullary symptoms enhancing in spite of conservat

Epidemiology of radiculopathies.

Many diseases affecting the peripheral nervous system or the spinal canal may be associated with pathology in the nerve roots, but the most common sources of radiculopathy are conditions that cause direct compression of nerve roots, including prolapsed intervertebral disks, disk degeneration, and osteoarthrosis of the apophyseal joints. The risk for prolapsed lumbar disk is highest in the group 20 to 39 years of age, and it is probably increased by the driving of motor vehicles, full-term pregnancies, and sedentary occupations. Cervical disk prolapses tend to occur in a slightly older age grou

Acute necrotizing myelopathy from nucleus pulposus embolism in dogs with intervertebral disk degeneration.

Two dogs that suddenly developed neurologic signs indicating a severe cervical spinal cord lesion were found at necropsy to have necrotizing myelopathy secondary to nucleus pulposus embolism. One dog had embolism of arteries and veins; in the other dog, veins alone were embolized. Each dog had early degeneration and extrusion of the C6--7 disk, from which emboli originated. In one dog, arterial emboli apparently entered inflammatory vasculature in the anulus fibrosus and were forced by extrusion back through the arterial system to the radicular artery and then to the cord. Venous embolism occu

The spine in sport and veteran military parachutists.

Spinal injuries and symptoms were studied in 109 ex-military parachutists and 112 sport (free fall) parachutists by means of postal questionnaires. 46 ex-military parachutists aged 50 years or over had a radiological examination of the lumbar spine and 58 sport parachutists had a radiological examination of the cervical spine as part of the survey. A history of back pain was significantly (P<0.01) associated with body weight in sport parachutists but not with the number of descents or with the subject's age. In the older ex-military group neither age, weight, nor the number of descents was sig
