Updates on AIDS cryptosporidiosis: a review.

Cryptosporidium is a protozoal coccidian parasite that produces among other diseases chronic watery diarrhea. The extent of the diseases is mostly dependent on the immune status of the individual. Mortality in immunosuppressed and AIDS individuals due to the diarrhea illness is nearly 80%. Although no effective treatment is available yet, promising results have been related to the use of Spiramycin, Erythromycin, Somatostatin and its analogues, and zidovudine.

Cryptosporidium parvum life cycle in suckling mice: a Nomarski interference-contrast study of a human-derived strain.

Cryptosporidiosis has emerged as one of the life-threatening opportunistic enteric infections in HIV-infected persons. To date, Cryptosporidium parvum is known to infect man via person-to-person or zoonotic transmission. We studied the sequential stages of the life cycle of C. parvum by Normarski interference-contrast microscopy in fresh gut specimens of newborn mice, infected with a strain derived from an AIDS patient with cryptosporidial diarrheal enteritis. Many 4- to 5-day-old suckling BALB/C mice were orally inoculated with 1 x 10(6) oocysts, obtained by acid flocculation of the patient's

Use of potentially infected donor hearts for cardiac transplantation.

Despite the nationwide shortage of heart donors, more patients, some of whom are critically ill, are being accepted as candidates for transplantation. Thus, on occasion, we have liberalized our donor criteria to meet the demand. We have recently transplanted 16 potentially infected donor hearts into critically ill recipients. Of these 16 donors, 7 had multiple positive blood cultures as follows: Streptococcus pneumoniae (3), Staphylococcus aureus (2), Klebsiella pneumoniae (1), and Enterobacter sp (1). Seven other donors were accepted despite high fevers (rectal temperature greater than 38.9 d

The gastrointestinal manifestations of AIDS.

Gastrointestinal disease in AIDS is common and is due to opportunistic infections, aggressive malignancy and possible direct HIV enteropathy. Disabling gastrointestinal symptoms are prominent both in patients with established AIDS and in patients with earlier stages of HIV infection. We report the cases of 160 patients with AIDS who underwent gastroenterological investigations at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney, between November 1983 to October 1987. Of these, 127 had the diagnosis of AIDS established prior to referral and 33 patients had the diagnosis of AIDS established as a result of gastroen

Overview of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus: infectious complications.

HIV is a retrovirus. Infection with HIV results in a progressive loss of immune function, primarily of the T-helper lymphocyte, although other arms of the immune system are secondarily affected. Patients who develop AIDS are amazingly susceptible to the development of opportunistic infections and neoplastic diseases. Common presentations include pneumonia, gastrointestinal infections, and central nervous system infections. Infections are usually due to reactivation of latent infections. These infections have a tendency to relapse and prolonged treatment appears to be necessary. HIV infection i

The retinal lesions of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

AIDS is a reliably diagnosed disease that is indicative of an underlying cellular immunodeficiency with no other cause for the disorder. To date over 2000 cases have been reported in North America and Europe and the number is rising. Patients fulfilling the definition for AIDS have included male homosexuals, IV drug abusers of both sexes, people from Haiti, heterosexual partners of AIDS patients, hemophiliacs, and some patients who fit no particular pattern. The etiology has been attributed to factors acting singly or in synergy namely that repeated exposure to CMV, semen, or other antigens re
