The perceivability of Schmorl's nodes in plain radiographs and discograms in the thoracolumbar junctional region (T10-L1) of the cadaveric spine was assessed by comparing the radiologic measurements with bone measurements. Schmorl's nodes in bone specimens were encountered in 19 of 24 spines studied. They were more than two times as common between vertebrae T10-11 and T11-12 as between T12 and L1 (P less than 0.01). When the areas of actual Schmorl's nodes exceeded 0.5 cm2 (corresponding to an aperture with a diameter of 0.8 cm), 47% of the nodes were seen in plain lateral radiographs and 68%

The disc degeneration in the thoracolumbar junctional region (T10-L1) of 37 male cadaveric spines was recorded with the use of discography. From 24 of these spines the facet joint orientation and degenerative findings of the facet and costovertebral joints, vertebral bodies (osteophytosis) and discs, and Schmorl's nodes were recorded directly from bones. At T11-12, the most common site for the transitional zone between thoracic and lumbar facet type, there was a marked variation in the orientation of facets. The occurrence of degenerative findings and Schmorl's nodes at the three levels in the

Scheuermann's disease of the thoracic spine is a well-defined entity, although its exact etiology is unknown. In the thoracolumbar or lumbar spine however, the criteria are much less strict for the application of this eponym. A retrospective review of all the cases of lumbar Scheuermann's disease seen at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital revealed two distinct radiographic pictures. These consisted of a "classic" Scheuermann's and an "atypical" type characterized by vertebral end plate changes, disc space narrowing, and anterior Schmorl's nodes, but not otherwise fulfilling Sorenson's criteria.

Computed tomography (CT) has proven to be an important diagnostic imaging technique for the evaluation of a variety of spinal disorders. The method is useful for identifying and characterizing acute fractures in traumatized patients and can accurately quantify spinal canal encroachment. Intervertebral disc disease and facet joint osteoarthritis are readily demonstrated by CT in both the cervical and lumbar regions. The technique can reliably distinguish between infection and neoplastic disease in the spine and is helpful for the guidance of percutaneous biopsy. A variety of congenital and deve

Low back pain and/or pain radiating to one or both lower limbs can result from causes other than intervertebral disc disease. Recently three patients presented with low back pain radiating down the legs. When CT examination of the lumbar spine proved unrewarding, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed. Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head was diagnosed and subsequently treated before femoral head collapse occurred. In patients with unexplained low back pain, AVN of the hip should be considered and ruled out by MRI, even if conventional plain films, polytomes, and radionuclide s

Magnetic resonance (MR) images of the lumbar spine from 150 patients were retrospectively reviewed. In 14 of these patients, at 18 disk levels, a vacuum phenomenon (VP) had been identified on plain radiographs and/or computed tomographic scans. The MR imaging appearance of these gas collections in 17 disks was an area without signal, best seen on spin-echo sequences with short repetition time and echo time in the sagittal view. MR imaging precisely located the VP in the anulus fibrosus, the nucleus pulposus, and Schmorl nodes. In all but one case, degeneration of the disk was complete and asso

The herniation of the nucleus pulposus into the vertebral body produces ectopic deposit of disc material which are known as Schmorl's nodes. This prolapsed disc tissue leaves characteristic deformations on the surface of the vertebral body and hence the incidence of this lesion can be studied in skeletal remains. This report describes the occurrence of Schmorl's nodes in TV8-SV1 in two historic adult British populations, one from Aberdeen and the other from London. In the Aberdeen group, both males and females showed a high incidence rate and severity of Schmorl's nodes. In the London group, t

A cohort of 321 men between the ages of eighteen and fifty-five was randomly selected from a group of 1221 men who had been surveyed by a questionnaire. They then had radiographs made of the lumbar spine. Of the 292 subjects fulfilling the criteria for inclusion in the study, ninety-six (32.9 per cent) had never had low-back pain, 134 (45.9 per cent) had had or were having moderate low-back pain, and sixty-two (21.2 per cent) had had or were having severe low-back pain. In the three groups there was a similar frequency of transitional vertebrae, Schmorl's nodes, the disc vacuum sign, narrowing

The bone mineral areal content and the ultimate compressive strength were determined in 109 lumbar vertebrae from 36 subjects. The bone mineral areal content was related to the number, shape, and localization of the Schmorl's nodes detected in the x-rayed and sectioned vertebral bodies. One type of node, irregular in shape and localization, occurred only in the vertebrae with low bone mineral areal content values and thus in vertebrae with relatively low compressive strength. A second type of Schmorl's nodes, regular in shape and localization, did not reflect any general weakness of the verteb

Spinal vacuum phenomenon may be encountered in many circumstances, such as degeneration of the intervertebral disk, disk injury, vertebral metastases, ischemic vertebral collapse, Schmorl's nodes, and infectious processes. The high spatial and densitometric resolution of computed tomography (CT) makes it possible to show gas in tissues with high frequency than by conventional radiography. In certain circumstances, the CT findings may be the decisive diagnostic element.

Between 1969 and 1979 five children were found to have lumbar disc disease and were evaluated for clinically unsuspected thoracic spine abnormalities. Of these five children, two had Scheuermann's disease and one had disc space narrowing associated with Schmorl's nodes. One other had narrowed disc spaces without bony defects, and one had a normal thoracic spine. A unitary concept of childhood lumbar disc disease, Schmorl's nodes and Scheuermann's disease is suggested.

This study was intended to demonstrate the neurological characteristics of idiopathic neurologic diseases of dogs and cats as a material for evaluating them as animal models for human diseases. A hundred and nineteen animals selected for this study from among outpatients with various neurological disorders presented to the Veterinary Hospital of University of Tokyo were studied mainly by the neurological examination with assistant methods of electroencephalography and electromyography. Hydrocephalus and vestibular diseases were highest in incidence in dogs, followed in order by encephalitis an

UNLABELLED: Histological and histochemical studies of the spine of a sixteen-year-old boy with juvenile kyphosis who was killed in an automobile accident showed abnormal cartilage in extensive areas of the vertebral and growth plates of the involved vertebrae. In these areas the cartilage matrix was loose, strongly positive when stained with alcian blue and weakly positive to periodic acid-Schiff, and it contained numerous chondrocytes. Some chondrocytes were irregularly shaped and others were in clusters. Vertebral bone growth was stunted under the areas of abnormal vertebral and growth plate

The frequency and appearance of bone abnormalities in patients with medullary carcinoma of the thyroid were compared with those of patients with other thyroid carcinomas. Only in patients with medullary carcinoma the following abnormalities were found: dolichocephaly, prognathism, anterior chest deformity, bone cysts. Schmorl nodes, spina bifida, slipped femoral epiphysis, pes cavus and marfanoid body build. Not only patients with medullary carcinoma of the thyroid as part of multiple endocrine neoplasia, but also patients with otherwise unrelated medullary carcinoma had bone defects. The caus

Recently, on the basis of in vitro experiments, a number of workers have suggested that degenerative disk desease may have an autoimmune basis. In order to corroborate these findings, a histopathologic study was undertaken on 218 specimens. A series of 108 Schmorl's nodes and 110 intervertebral disks obtained at laminectomy were examined for an immune-reaction type of inflammatory cellular infiltrate. While no inflammatory cellular infiltrates were found in any of the specimens, there were granulation tissue ingrowths and vascular invasion. these pathologic findings may represent the body's re

This paper concerns a radiological and postmortem study of an 81-year-old woman with diffuse intervertebral osteochondrosis (T12-L1 severe erosion) in association with generalized osteoarthritis and articular chondrocalcinosis. Varying degrees of cartilage plate flaws with cartilaginous Schmorl's nodes and vertebral plateaux erosion are shown to occur without calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposits in situ. Differential diagnosis between intervertebral osteochondrosis and infectious spondylitis may require a combination of tomographic evolution over time, bone scans and biopsy, the latter being

Abnormalities of intervertebral discs associated with vertebral metastasis from prostatic carcinoma are described in an investigation utilizing patient and cadaveric material. Radiographic and pathologic findings indicate that discal abnormality in this situation relates to three potential processes: intervertebral disc degeneration (intervertebral osteochondrosis); cartilaginous (Schmorl's) nodes; discal invasion by tumor. In most patients with vertebral metastasis, the adjacent intervertebral disc appears normal, a useful radiographic finding suggesting the presence of tumor rather than infe

Cartilaginous (Schmorl's) nodes are related to prolapses of intervertebral disk material into the vertebral body. These nodes can be produced by any process which weakens either the cartilaginous plate covering the superior and inferior surfaces of the vertebral body or the subchondral trabeculae of the vertebra. Such processes include juvenile kyphosis, trauma, metabolic and neoplastic disorders, and degenerative disk disease. Radiographic abnormalities include indentations of vertebral outline and radiolucencies within the vertebral body with varying degrees of sclerosis. These can be readil

The distribution of end-plate lesions (Schmorl's nodes) and their relationship to bone density and disc degeneration have been studied in 50 post-mortem spines below D9 in subjects aged 13-96 years. Lesions were present in 76% of cases with a predominance in males. They were found more frequently in the lower than in the upper vertebral end-plate. They were also more common and more severe in the dorsolumbar (D10-L1) region than in the lower lumbar (L2-L5 region). In adults they were unrelated to age and bone density. Lesions were significantly related to disc degeneration in the D10-L1 region

In a radiographic-pathologic study of the spine and several axial joints in a cadaver with renal osteodystrophy, subchondral resorption of bone is described as an important mechanism of osseous abnormality. Widening and irregularity of the sacroilliac and sternoclavicular joints and symphysis pubis are related predominantly to trabecular destruction beneath cartilage surfaces, substitutive fibrosis, and new bone formation. Subperiosteal abnormalities at these locations produce juxta-articular erosions. The presence of osteitis fibrosa cystica about multiple Schmorl's nodes within the thoracic
