What can be observed in intervertebral cartilage endplate with aging? An animal model study of excessive axial mechanical loading.

INTRODUCTION: The cartilage endplate (CEP) plays a crucial role as both a mechanical barrier and nutrient channel for the intervertebral disc, but it is vulnerable to excessive axial loading. We modified the Ilizarov external fixator and applied it to the CEP of the rat tail to impose diurnal, controllable excess axial loading. The objective was to measure morphological changes in the CEP when subjected to loading during the aging process. METHODS: Two Kirschner wires were, respectively, inserted into the center of the eighth and ninth coccygeal vertebrae (Co8/9) of rat (n = 54) to apply axia

Massive bone destruction in a human proximal femur from ancient Nubia.

Massive bone destruction in a human right proximal femur is described and differentially discussed in this case study. The individual was an older adult female buried at the ancient Nubian site of Tombos (modern-day Sudan) dating to the early Napatan/Third Intermediate Period (c. 1069-750 BCE). The right femur displayed a pathologic fracture with extensive lytic destruction and resorption of the entire femoral neck, most of the femoral head, and trochanters. Macroscopic and radiographic analyses revealed cortical thinning of the proximal diaphysis with new bone formation enclosing the medullar

Semantic contrast with uncertainty-aware pseudo label for lumbar semi-supervised classification.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a prevalent spinal disease that can result in severe pain, with Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) serving as a commonly diagnostic tool. However, annotating numerous MRI images, necessary for deep learning based LDH diagnosis, can be challenging and labor-intensive. Semi-supervised learning, mainly utilizing pseudo labeling and consistency regularization, can leverage limited labeled images and abundant unlabeled images. However, consistency regularization solely focuses on maintaining the semantic consistency of transformed unlabeled data but fails t

SymTC: A symbiotic Transformer-CNN net for instance segmentation of lumbar spine MRI.

Intervertebral disc disease, a prevalent ailment, frequently leads to intermittent or persistent low back pain, and diagnosing and assessing of this disease rely on accurate measurement of vertebral bone and intervertebral disc geometries from lumbar MR images. Deep neural network (DNN) models may assist clinicians with more efficient image segmentation of individual instances (discs and vertebrae) of the lumbar spine in an automated way, which is termed as instance image segmentation. In this work, we proposed SymTC, an innovative lumbar spine MR image segmentation model that combines the str

Prevalence of presumed endplate junction failure at the lumbosacral intervertebral junction in dogs on computed tomography.

Lumbosacral intervertebral disc herniation (IVDH) is a common cause of lower back pain in dogs and humans. In humans, the vertebral endplate to annulus fibrosus (AF) attachment was implicated as an alternative failure site besides rupture through the dorsal AF (AFF). Endplate junction failure (EPJF) is characterized by IVDH, accompanied by endplate irregularities (type A), rim avulsions (type B), or larger bony avulsions on one (type C) or both endplates (type D), associated with an adjacent endplate defect. This retrospective study reports the CT prevalence of presumed EPJF in dogs and its as

Modic changes in the lumbar vertebral column of chondrodystrophic and non-chondrodystrophic dogs with intervertebral disc disease.

INTRODUCTION: Modic changes (MC) are signs of vertebral pathology visible on magnetic resonance (MR) images that have been associated with low back pain (LBP) and disc degeneration in people. Multiple breeds of dogs also develop MCs and coincident back pain. However, the association between breed, MC, and spinal pathologies has yet to be fully elucidated. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of MC that occur spontaneously in the lumbar vertebral column of dogs diagnosed with intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) and examine their association with demographic criteria and the disc width ind
