Modic changes and its association with other MRI phenotypes in east Anatolian low back pain patients.

OBJECTIVE: Modic changes (MCs) are known to be associated with low back pain (LBP). Literature contains conflicting reports about the prevalence of MCs and other spinal phenotypes among different populations with LBP patients. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of MCs in the lumbar spine and associated features in Eastern Anatolian chronic LBP patients. METHODS: The study sample comprised of 786 consecutive patients [(490 female, 296 male), (mean age 39.7; range 20-78)] with a history of low back pain for at least 3 months. Data about MCs involvement, Schmorl's nodes (SN), disc degeneration

ISSLS PRIZE in Clinical Science 2022: Epidemiology, risk factors and clinical impact of juvenile Modic changes in paediatric patients with low back pain.

PURPOSE: It's a long-held belief that Modic changes (MC) occur only in adults, with advanced age, and are highly associated with pain and adverse outcomes. The following study addressed the epidemiology, risk factors and clinical relevance of MC in young paediatric patients. METHODS: Two hundred and seven consecutive patients with no history of deformities, neoplasms, trauma, or infections were included in this ambispective study. MRIs were utilized to assess MCs and types, and other degenerative disc/endplate abnormalities. Subject demographics, duration of symptoms, clinic visits, conservat

The Role of IL-17-Mediated Inflammatory Processes in the Pathogenesis of Intervertebral Disc Degeneration and Herniation: A Comprehensive Review.

It has been reported that degenerated and herniated lumbar intervertebral discs show high expression of IL-17, suggesting that local immune reactions occur in patients with low back pain. While clinical sample analyses from different laboratories confirm this, it is not deeply not known on how IL-17 is induced in the pathology and their interactions with other inflammatory responses. This conscience review organizes current laboratory findings on this topic and present trajectory for full understanding on the role of IL-17 in pathology of intervertebral disc disease.

A protocol for recruiting and analyzing the disease-oriented Russian disc degeneration study (RuDDS) biobank for functional omics studies of lumbar disc degeneration.

Lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration (DD) disease is one of the main risk factors for low back pain and a leading cause of population absenteeism and disability worldwide. Despite a variety of biological studies, lumbar DD is not yet fully understood, partially because there are only few studies that use systematic and integrative approaches. This urges the need for studies that integrate different omics (including genomics and transcriptomics) measured on samples within a single cohort. This protocol describes a disease-oriented Russian disc degeneration study (RuDDS) biobank recruitment a

Rates, Predictive Factors, and Adverse Outcomes of Fusion Surgery for Lumbar Degenerative Disorders in Ontario, Canada, Between 2006 and 2015: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The addition of fusion surgery to the decompression for lumbar degenerative disorders remains controversial. The purpose of this study is to compare the rate and outcome of decompression and fusion versus decompression alone. METHODS: This population-based retrospective cohort study used several linked administrative databases to identify patients who underwent spinal decompression surgery in Ontario, Canada, from 2006 to 2015. Patients who had previous spine surgery, concurrent lumbar disc replacement, or a diagnosis other than degenerative disc disease were excluded. Adjusted lo

Schmorl Node Can Cause Increased 68Ga-FAPI Activity on PET/CT.

68Ga-FAPI is a newly developed tumor imaging agent with promising clinical applications. However, benign lesions may also show increased FAPI activity. We accidentally discovered that Schmorl node expressed FAPI activity in a patient with sweat gland cancer. Thus, greater awareness is needed that Schmorl nodes are a potential reason for false-positive uptake on 68Ga-FAPI PET/CT.

Lumbar Scheuermann's disease found in a patient with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) caused by a heterozygous mutation in COL1A2 (c.4048G > A): a case report.

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heterogeneous connective tissue disorder characterized by increased bone fragility and a series of extraskeletal manifestations. Approximately 90 % of OI cases are caused by type I collagen variants encoded by the collagen type I alpha 1 (COL1A1) or type I alpha 2 (COL1A2) gene. Lumbar Scheuermann's disease is an atypical type of Scheuermann's disease accompanied by Schmorl's nodes and irregular endplates but without pronounced kyphosis. Although the etiology of Scheuermann's disease is unclear, genetic and environmental factors are likely. CASE P
