BACKGROUND: Trans-sacral epiduroscopic laser decompression (SELD) using slender epiduroscope and a holmium YAG laser is one of the minimally invasive surgical options for lumbar disc herniation. However, the learning curve of SELD and the effect of surgical proficiency on clinical outcome have not yet been established. We investigated patients with lumbar disc herniation undergoing SELD to report the clinical outcome and learning curve.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of clinical outcome and learning curve were performed at a single center from clinical data collected from November 2015 to No

OBJECTIVE: To improve the treatment effect of patients with L5 S1 lumber disc herniation (LDH) with a narrow interlaminar window, we proposed an alternative approach to percutaneous endoscopic interlaminar discectomy (PEID) via the laminoplasty technique.
METHODS: Fifteen L5 S1 LDH patients (7 men and 8 women; age range, 22 to 56 years; median age, 34 years; 9 left, 6 right) were enrolled in the present study retrospectively. The interlaminar windows of all patients were narrow (the transverse diameter of the L5 S1 interlaminar window is equal to or less than that of L4-5 ). Percutaneous lami

BACKGROUND: Discectomy is sometimes associated with recurrence of disc herniation and pain after surgery. The evidence to use an interspinous dynamic stabilization system or instrumented fusion in association with disc excision to prevent pain and re-operation remains controversial. In this study, we analyzed if adding interspinous spacer or fusion, offers advantages in relation to microdiscetomy alone.
METHODS: Patients with lumbar disc herniation were divided in 3 groups; microdiscectomy alone (MD), microdiscectomy plus interspinous spacer (IS) and open discectomy plus posterior lumbar inte

BACKGROUND: Interlaminar endoscopic lumbar discectomy (IELD) is an efficient surgical treatment for lumbar disc herniation. However, this minimally invasive procedure requires a considerable learning curve that has not yet been standardized. This review aimed to evaluate the learning curve's characteristics, including the cutoff point required to achieve technical proficiency and to discuss appropriate training methods.
METHODS: We systematically searched the core databases (PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library) for clinical studies that evaluated the learning curve using quantitative data. W

OBJECTIVE: Discectomy remains the classic procedure for treating lumbar intervertebral disc (IVD) herniation, but the occurrence of defects after discectomy is thought to be an important cause generating recurrent and accelerated IVD degeneration. Previous studies attempted suture of the annulus fissure, but the validity of this technique on restraining the degenerative process is controversial. On the other hand, cell therapies have been shown in multiple clinical and basic studies. Our purpose was to investigate the effectiveness of selective retention of autologous Bone Marrow Stromal Cells

BACKGROUND: Hyperproteinorrachia (raised cerebrospinal fluid total protein [CSF-TP]) without pleocytosis (HP) (also known as albuminocytologic dissociation) is identified in dogs with different neurologic diseases. However, the association between survival and increased CSF-TP is unknown.
OBJECTIVES: (a) Identify conditions commonly associated with HP in dogs and (b) investigate whether higher CSF-TP concentrations or other relevant factors are associated with 1-year survival.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study that identified dogs with HP (Cisternal CSF-TP >0.30 g/L, Lumbar CSF-TP >0.45

The prognosis for intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), a common neurologic disease in dogs, varies, with some cases requiring long-term rehabilitation. Corsets are used as part of the physical rehabilitation of dogs, and one of these, the Anifull Dog's Corset Pro, is manufactured and sold by Daiya Industry Co., Ltd. This corset is used to relieve pain caused by spinal cord and vertebral diseases, and to prevent neurological conditions from worsening, by limiting spinal movement. However, the effect of the Anifull Dog's Corset Pro on gait has not yet been clarified. Therefore, we aimed to evalua

BACKGROUND: Motivation and necessity to adopt minimally invasive therapies in the field of spinal regenerative medicine is increasing. Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has recently been used as an effective technological and biological approach to tissue repair and has shown to improve multiple conditions including back pain and degenerative disc pathology. In addition, it is well established that the anatomic elements of the spinal system affected by degenerative pathology include the intervertebral disc (IVD) and vertebral subchondral bone (VSB), which play a crucial role in mai

Even though the relationship between occupational stress and entheseal changes has been extensively examined in modern skeletal series, less attention has been given in examining degenerative and plastic osseous change along the spine in relation to different professions. This paper attempts this investigation and is the first that explores the level of physical activity in female housekeepers of The Athens Collection. A sample of 65 adult skeletons up to 50 years old and 1653 vertebrae are examined for Degenerative Joint Diseases (including Schmorl's nodes) and spinal facet remodeling. The ab
