Decorated bodies for eternal life: A multidisciplinary study of late Roman Period stucco-shrouded portrait mummies from Saqqara (Egypt).

This study focuses on the multidisciplinary investigation of three stucco-shrouded mummies with mummy portrait from Egypt dating from the late 3rd to the middle of the 4th century AD, corresponding to the late Roman Period. These three mummies were excavated in the early 17th and late 19th centuries in the Saqqara necropolis near the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis. Two of them experienced an interesting collection history, when they became part of the collection of the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland August II in Dresden, Germany, in 1728. The investigation includes information about

The effect of bone mineral density on development of Schmorl's nodes in young patients.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to detect the relationship between the development of Schmorl's nodes (SNs) and bone mineral density (BMD) in young patients. METHODS: Computerized tomography (CT) images of the thoracolumbar vertebral column were retrospectively examined by two experienced radiologists for SNs. The diagnostic criterion for SN was defined as a node size larger than one-third but not more than two-thirds of the relevant vertebral endplate. Considering the eligibility criteria, a total of 74 individuals (60 males and 14 females; mean age: 24.3 years; age range: 18-40 years)

Feasibility of Optical Surface-Guidance for Position Verification and Monitoring of Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy in Deep-Inspiration Breath-Hold.

BACKGROUND: Reductions in tumor movement allow for more precise and accurate radiotherapy with decreased dose delivery to adjacent normal tissue that is crucial in stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). Deep inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) is an established approach to mitigate respiratory motion during radiotherapy. We assessed the feasibility of combining modern optical surface-guided radiotherapy (SGRT) and image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) to ensure and monitor reproducibility of DIBH and to ensure accurate tumor localization for SBRT as an imaging-guided precision medicine. METHODS: We def

Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) to treat specialized type of endplate fractures around the Schmorl's node: a prospective study of 65 patients.

BACKGROUND: The Schmorl's nodes (SNs) are defined as the herniation of the intervertebral disc into the vertebral body. Endplate fractures around the Schmorl's node could result in severe back pain that is similar to vertebral compression fractures. The objective of this study was to prospectively analyze the surgical effectiveness and safety of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) for endplate fractures around the SNs. METHODS: Seventy-one consecutive patients with the fresh endplate fracture around SNs from October 2017 to February 2018 were enrolled in this study. The visual analog scale (VAS

Lumbar Vertebral Endplate Defects on Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Degenerative Spondylolisthesis: Novel Classification, Characteristics, and Correlative Factor Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Endplate defects are commonly seen in patients with lumbar degenerative disease. However, little is known about the presence of endplate defects in patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS). In the present study, we have introduced a classification system for endplate defects in patients with DS using routine magnetic resonance imaging findings and explored the correlative factors. METHODS: Endplate defects were classified into 3 major categories (rim defects, focal defects, and erosive defects) and 5 subtypes (anterior type, posterior type, arc type at the anterior rim, n

Spondylolysis and spinal adaptations for bipedalism: The overshoot hypothesis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The study reported here focused on the aetiology of spondylolysis, a vertebral pathology usually caused by a fatigue fracture. The goal was to test the Overshoot Hypothesis, which proposes that people develop spondylolysis because their vertebral shape is at the highly derived end of the range of variation within Homo sapiens. METHODOLOGY: We recorded 3D data on the final lumbar vertebrae of H. sapiens and three great ape species, and performed three analyses. First, we compared H. sapiens vertebrae with and without spondylolysis. Second, we compared H. sapiens vert

Cocktail Treatment with a Gelatin Sponge Impregnated with Ropivacaine, Dexamethasone, and Vitamin B12 Promotes Early Postoperative Recovery after Percutaneous Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy: A Retrospective, Case-Controlled Study.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) can only relieve mechanical compression but cannot directly reduce the inflammatory reaction of the adjacent nerve root, which contributes to persistent pain and physical disabilities postoperatively. Numerous studies have explored the application of epidural steroids after an open lumbar discectomy in relieving pain by reducing local inflammatory reactions and further peridural scar formation. OBJECTIVES: To explore that whether "cocktail treatment" in which a gelatin sponge was impregnated with ropivacaine, dexamethasone, and vita

Lumbar intervertebral disc mRNA sequencing identifies the regulatory pathway in patients with disc herniation and spondylolisthesis.

Lumbar degenerative disc disease (DDD) is a multifaceted progressive condition and often accompanied by disc herniation (DH) and/or degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS). Given the high prevalence of the disease (up to 20% according to some estimates) and the high costs associated with its care, there is a need to explore novel therapies such as regenerative medicine. Exploring these novel therapies first warrants investigation of molecular pathways underlying these disorders. Here, we show results from next generation RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) on mRNA isolated from 10 human nucleus pulposus (NP)

Vertebral Bone Quality Score and Postoperative Lumbar Lordosis Associated with Need for Reoperation After Lumbar Fusion.

BACKGROUND: Poor bone quality is a known risk factor for hardware failure and adjacent segment disease after lumbar fusion. One new method of analyzing bone quality is the vertebral bone quality (VBQ) score, which can be obtained from preoperative lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. We decided to evaluate whether patients' VBQ scores were associated with reoperation after lumbar fusion. METHODS: We queried records of patients who underwent elective lumbar fusion for degenerative conditions between 2012 and 2017. Patients who required reoperations after lumbar fusions because of sym

Surgeon clinical practice variation and patient preferences during the informed consent discussion: a mixed-methods analysis in lumbar spine surgery.

BACKGROUND: Patients with lumbar disc herniation may greatly benefit from microdiscectomy. Although spine surgeons performing microdiscectomy routinely obtain informed consent, the potential adverse events they disclose often vary. Moreover, little is known about what disclosures are deemed most valuable by patients. The aim of this mixed-methods study was to determine practice variations among spine surgeons in regard to the disclosure of potential adverse events during informed consent discussions for lumbar microdiscectomy and to determine which topics patients perceived to be valuable in t
