GOAL: The aim of this article is to describe rare and often unrecognized causes of spinal pain syndromes.
METHOD: Intervertebral disc degeneration frequently appears in early adulthood and can have a symptomatic or asymptomatic course. This article discusses incidence, pathophysiology, imaging, and pain symptomatology involved in the origin of back pain.
RESULTS: Anulus tears are often found in asymptomatic individuals but could be implicated in lumbar pain symptomatology in correlation with the provocative discography. Transient disorders can lead to pseudarthrosis of the iliac bone and to

The Schmorl node represents displacement of intervertebral disc tissue into the vertebral body. Both Schmorl nodes and degenerative disc disease are common in the human spine. We performed a retrospective study, for the period from January 2003 to February 2005, evaluating 23 patients affected by painful Schmorl nodes, who underwent in our department percutaneous transpedicular injection of polymethylmethacrylate (vertebroplasty) in order to solve their back pain not responsive to medical and physical management. Eighteen patients reported improvement of the back pain and no one reported a wor

STUDY DESIGN: Large scale, case-control study.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of the Taq I alleles in vitamin D receptor on the risk of developing degenerative disc disease in a Southern Chinese population.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Previous studies in Finns and Japanese suggest that the Taq I polymorphism of vitamin D receptor is associated with the development of degenerative disc disease in the lumbar spine. However, sample sizes were small, and the results need to be confirmed in other populations.
METHOD: Lumbar degenerative disc disease was defined by magnetic resonance imaging (MR

UNLABELLED: Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is a common finding in MRI scans and X-rays. However, their correlation to morphological and biochemical changes is not well established. In this study, radiological and MRI parameters of DDD were assessed and compared with morphological and biochemical findings of disc degeneration. Thirty-nine human lumbar discs (L1-S1), age 19-86 years, were harvested from eight cadavers. Within 48 h postmortem, MRIs in various spin-echo sequences and biplanar radiographs of intact spines were obtained. Individual discs with endplates were then sectioned in the mi

Although true physical-chemical experimental proofs are lacking in the literature, numerous clinical reports have shown that many radiological manifestations of the so-called vacuum phenomenon (VP) only represent snapshots of a complex dynamic hydropneumatical continuum extending from true vacuum to gas and/or fluid and vice versa. In the great majority of cases, VP remains an incidental accessory or anecdotal finding but, nevertheless, it occasionally represents a useful clinical or radiological sign of critical importance for the understanding, clinical diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic

Fifteen months after right lobe lobectomy with adjunctive radiation therapy for squamous cell carcinoma, a patient 53-yr-old man underwent Tc-99m depreotide chest single photon emission tomography (SPECT). In addition to two focal areas of abnormally increased uptake in the right lung, the Tc-99m depreotide SPECT showed cold areas in the middle thoracic vertebrae. Photopenic areas in the 6th and 7th thoracic vertebrae were shown on a bone scintigraphy. T1 weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spine showed fatty replacement of the marrow and Schmorl's nodes involving the 5th to 11th

We examined the pathogenesis of Schmorl's nodes, correlating the histological findings from 12 lumbar vertebrae with the corresponding conventional radiographs, tomographs, MR images and CT scans. The last revealed round, often multiple cystic lesions with indistinct sclerotic margins beneath the cartilaginous endplate. The appearances are similar to the typical CT changes of osteonecrosis. Histological examination of en-bloc slices through Schmorl's nodes gave clear evidence of subchondral osteonecrosis. Beneath the cartilage endplate, we found fibrosis within the marrow cavities with the dis

We report a rare case of lumbar spinal radiculopathy caused by a tunneling Schmorl's node originating from the superior endplate of the L3 vertebra of a 75-year-old patient and penetrating the spinal canal through the posterior wall of this vertebra. This case highlights recent reports emphasizing the clinical pain syndromes possibly associated with Schmorl's nodes.

STUDY DESIGN: The phenotype of patients with sciatica who have the Trp2 allele is characterized cross-sectionally.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether it is possible to differentiate patients with the Trp2 allele clinically or by magnetic resonance imaging.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Several studies have indicated a positive family history for intervertebral disc disease. Previously, a dominantly inherited defect was identified in the COL9A2 gene that changed a codon for glutamine to that for tryptophan in the alpha2 chain of collagen IX (Trp2 allele). This change may render intervertebral disc

PURPOSE: The purpose of this work was to describe the MR appearance of cartilaginous endplates (CEPs) with close anatomic correlation in cadavers derived from elderly subjects.
METHOD: High-resolution MRI was performed on five cadaveric lumbar spines, and a total of 48 CEPs were studied with T1-weighted spin echo, T2-weighted fast spin echo, and fat-suppressed 3D spoiled GRASS gradient echo (SPGR) MR images. All specimens underwent anatomic sectioning, and gross anatomic findings were correlated with those of MRI.
RESULTS: Conventional MR images allowed gross morphologic evaluation of the in

UNLABELLED: Delayed graft function (DGF) is one of the key post-operative challenges for a subset of kidney transplantation (KTx) patients. Graft survival is significantly lower in recipients who have experienced DGF than in those who have not. Assessing the risk of chronic graft injury, predicting graft rejection, providing personalized treatment, and improving graft survival are major strategies for predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM/3PM) to promote the development of transplant medicine. However, since PPPM aims to accurately identify disease by integrating multiple omi

OBJECTIVE: We describe the imaging findings of an unusual type of Schmorl's node appearing as giant cystlike lesion of the vertebral bodies.
CONCLUSION: Giant cystic Schmorl's nodes are unusual entities; their radiologic appearance differs dramatically from the classic description and is diagnostically challenging. However, the appearance of these nodes on conventional radiographs and especially on MR images is characteristic. Knowledge of this entity would help to eliminate unnecessary invasive diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.

Comparison of funerary treatment and skeletal biology can be very informative about the interplay of social status and meanings and actual life conditions in ancient communities, but such comparison is rarely done, due in part to the disciplinary separation of bioanthropology and social archaeology in many archaeological traditions. In this paper, we analyze relations between skeletal pathologies and grave goods in a sample of 94 individuals from Pontecagnano (Salerno, Italy, seventh-third centuries BC). The results show that the relationship between health, activity, and social status as expr
