[Radicular pain caused by Schmörl's node: a case report].

Schmorl's node a focal herniation of intervertebral disc through the end plate into the vertebral body. Most of the established Schmorl's nodes are quiescent. However, disc herniation into the vertebral marrow can cause low back pain by irritating a nociceptive system. Schmorl's node induced radicular pain is a very rare condition. Some cases of Schmorl's node which generated low back pain or radicular pain were treated by surgical methods. In this article, authors reported a rare case of a patient with radicular pain cause by Schmorl's node located at the inferior surface of the 5th lumbar sp

Lumbar Schmorl's Nodes and Their Correlation with Spine Configuration and Degeneration.

The aim of this study was to reveal whether demographic aspect, vertebral morphometry, and spine degeneration are associated with lumbar Schmorl's nodes (SNs). A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed using data from the Department of Radiology (Carmel, Medical Center, Israel) for 180 individuals: age range between 40 and 99 years; 90 males and 90 females. All participants had undergone high-resolution CT scans for abdominal diagnostic purposes in the same supine position prior to our study, which enabled the processing of the scans in all planes and allowed a 3D reconstruction of t

Ossification of the Ligamentum Flavum in a Nineteenth-Century Skeletal Population Sample from Ireland: Using Bioarchaeology to Reveal a Neglected Spine Pathology.

Ossification of the ligamentum flavum of the spine (OLF) is rarely reported in individuals of European ancestry. It has, however, been observed in archaeological skeletons from Europe. The aim of this study was to revisit OLF rates, utilising a mid-nineteenth-century skeletal sample from Ireland. The hypothesis was that the OLF prevalence rate was similar to studies on non-Europeans. Spines from 345 individuals were analysed, and the extent of OLF recorded on the cranial and caudal attachment sites of each vertebra using the following classification system: Grade 0 (no change); Grade 1 (<2 mm)

Degenerative changes of the thoracic spine do exist in patients with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis: a detailed thoracic spine CT analysis.

Background Degenerative intervertebral disease (DID) is an exclusion criterion in the Resnick and Niwayama radiographic classification for diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). However, although DID was previously described in DISH, no systematic computed tomography (CT) analysis has been reported so far. Purpose To assess for the presence and prevalence of such changes on CT examinations of the thoracic spine of individuals with DISH. Material and Methods Intervertebral space (D1-L1) on chest CT examinations of DISH patients was retrospectively evaluated for the presence of DID. Pa

Defects of the vertebral end plate: implications for disc degeneration depend on size.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Bony vertebral end plates must be porous to allow metabolite transport into the disc, and yet strong to resist high intradiscal pressure (IDP). End plate defects may therefore have nutritional and mechanical consequences for the disc, depending on their size and type. We hypothesize that broad, diffuse defects are more closely associated with disc decompression and degeneration than are focal Schmorl's node-type defects. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine how the size and type of end plate defects are related to decompression and degeneration in the adjacent interverte

Increased and normalized uptake of 18F-FDG in a case of bone periprosthetic infection treated by antibiotics.

UNLABELLED: We report the case of a 69 years old man with left hip prosthesis, who presented clinical, biochemical and imaging signs of periprosthetic infection treated with linezolid, an antibacterial agent of the oxazolidinone class. Two weeks after this treatment, a fluorine-18-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) scan showed increased uptake in the skeleton and also increased uptake in several focal areas in the spine and near the prosthesis and the surgical wound on the left gluteus medius. Bone marrow biopsy was negative; meanwhile th

Exploring sex differences in diets and activity patterns through dental and skeletal studies in populations from ancient Corinth, Greece.

Sex and temporal differences are assessed in relation to dietary habits and activity patterns in three ancient populations from Corinth, Greece. The skeletal sample spans time from the Geometric to the Early Byzantine Period (9th c. BCE-5th c. CE). Dental caries and tooth wear have been proven to be reliable dietary indicators. Similarly, spinal osteoarthritis, spinal facet remodeling and Schmorl's nodes, have been used to infer activity patterns.

Regular graveyard in the stronghold versus settlement burials in the bailey. Comparison of Early Medieval populations from Pohansko (Czech Republic).

The aim of the study is to identify possible differences in the prevalence of biological stress markers (cribra orbitalia, linear enammel hypoplasia), dental caries, activity markers (Schmorl's nodes) and markers of violence (traumatic lesions) in populations from a typical graveyard around the first church (9th-10th century AD) in the stronghold and from settlement burials in the southern bailey (second half of the 9th - beginning of the 10th century AD) of Slavs from Pohansko (Czech Republic). Cribra orbitalia and enamel hypoplasia did not markedly differ in either population. On the other h

Disc degeneration on MRI is more prevalent in young elite skiers compared to controls.

PURPOSE: Evidence-based facts regarding spine abnormalities and back pain are needed in order to develop rehabilitation programs and prevent spine injuries in young skiers. The aim therefore is to identify MRI changes in the thoraco-lumbar spine and the lifetime prevalence of back pain, as well as the association between them, in young skiers compared to non-athletes. METHODS: Seventy-five young elite alpine and mogul skiers, age range 16-20 years, were compared with 27 non-athletic controls. All subjects underwent spinal MRI and answered back pain questionnaires. RESULTS: Fifty-six percent

A Case of Persistent Low Back Pain in a Young Female Caused by a Trauma-Induced Schmorl's Node in the Lumbar Spine Five Vertebra.

Physicians are often faced with managing difficult conditions such as chronic lower back pain. Intervertebral disk herniation typically occurs horizontally, leading to impingement of the spinal cord which can potentially cause radicular symptoms or other spinal cord pathologies; however, disk herniations can also occur vertically and extend through the endplate of an adjacent cranial or caudal vertebra: a phenomenon known as a Schmorl's node. Although Schmorl's nodes can be seen in many asymptomatic individuals, they can be a cause of degenerative disk disease and low back pain. An 18-year-old

In the quest for degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis etiology: the Schmorl's nodes model.

BACKGROUND: Degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (DLSS) is a common health problem in the elderly and usually associated with three-joint complex degeneration. Schmorl's nodes (SNs) are described as vertical herniation of the disc into the vertebral body through a weakened part of the end plate that can lead to disc degeneration. Since SNs can harm the spine unit stability, the association between DLSS and SNs is expected. The aim of this study is to shed light on the relationship between degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis and SNs. METHODS: Two groups of individuals were studied: the first in

Painful Schmorl's nodes treated by discography and discoblock.

PURPOSE: To determine the efficacy of discography and discoblock in the treatment of low back pain (LBP) associated with painful Schmorl's nodes (SNs). METHODS: Between January 2010 and February 2015, 46 patients were studied who had LBP suspected to be secondary to SNs. There were 34 men and 12 women, and mean age was 54.2 years (range 42-68 years). All patients underwent provocation discography, and discoblock was given to positive patients (confirmed to have painful SNs). Visual analogue scores (VAS) and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) were evaluated at 4 h and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months p

A Retrospective Study of Percutaneous Balloon Kyphoplasty for the Treatment of Symptomatic Schmorl's Nodes: 5-Year Results.

BACKGROUND Despite literature supporting the efficiency of percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty (PKP) in treating osteoporotic and malignant vertebral compression fractures, few reports exist that document its use for treatment of symptomatic Schmorl's nodes (SNs) refractory to conservative treatment. Patients with symptomatic SNs could have pain in the vertebrae similar to an acute vertebral compression fracture. MRI is very helpful in diagnosing symptomatic SNs when x-ray and CT scan are unremarkable. In painful cases, the vertebrae bone marrow around the SNs is hyperintense on T2-weighted subse

Scheuermann's disease in a juvenile male from the late Roman necropolis of Torrenueva (3rd-4th century CE, Granada, Spain).

This study details a severe case of Scheuermann's disease (SD) in a well-preserved skeleton of a juvenile male (designated TOR302), dated to 3rd-4th century CE, from the late Roman necropolis of Torrenueva (Granada, Spain). Individual TOR302 shows an evident kyphotic curve in the thoraco-lumbar spine, which is characterised by: (i) vertebral bodies of thoracic vertebra T2, thoracic segment T4-T9, and thoraco-lumbar segment T12-L2 wedged at >5°; (ii) slight anterior extensions of the epiphyseal ring; (iii) Schmorl's nodes on the superior and/or inferior plates; and (iv) a Cobb angle of 75°, der

An Unusual Cause of Back Pain in a 10-Year-Old Girl.

A 10-year-old girl with a 2-week history of atraumatic back pain presented to the emergency department with difficulty ambulating and a history of 2 episodes of urinary incontinence in the past week. Her examination was significant for pain with movement, tenderness to palpation in the lower thoracic spine, and no neurological deficits. In this case, the child was found to have a Schmorl node at T8 in the superior aspect of the vertebral body. Schmorl nodes are protrusions of the cartilage of the intervertebral disc through the vertebral body endplate and into the adjacent that is more commonl

Sharp Force Trauma Death in a Young Individual From Medieval Gloucester.

The authors of the present work evaluate the trauma observed on the skeletal remains of an individual from medieval Gloucester and reconstruct the events that led to his death. The almost complete skeleton was recovered from the cemetery of St Owen and dates to the late medieval period. Several methods were used to determine the sex and age of the individual. The anthropological examination showed that the remains belonged to a young male, between the ages of 17 and 19 years. The young man also had antemortem pathologies that were related to his diet and lifestyle, as he appears to have had ir
