Evaluation of Schmorl's nodes using F-18 FDG PET/CT.

AIM: To evaluate the image findings of Schmorl's nodes on combined 2-[(18)F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve patients who were diagnosed with Schmorl's nodes and had undergone magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and FDG PET/CT were retrospectively recruited for this study. The period between the MRI and the FDG PET/CT examinations was within 1 week. The demographic data and clinical history were reviewed. The relationship between MRI findings and the values of maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) on FDG P

Vertebral morphology influences the development of Schmorl's nodes in the lower thoracic vertebrae.

Schmorl's nodes are the result of herniations of the nucleus pulposus into the adjacent vertebral body and are commonly identified in both clinical and archaeological contexts. The current study aims to identify aspects of vertebral shape that correlate with Schmorl's nodes. Two-dimensional statistical shape analysis was performed on digital images of the lower thoracic spine (T10-T12) of adult skeletons from the late medieval skeletal assemblages from Fishergate House, York, St. Mary Graces and East Smithfield Black Death cemeteries, London, and postmedieval Chelsea Old Church, London. Lumbar vertebral endplate lesions: prevalence, classification, and association with age.

STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional autopsy study. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the prevalence of endplate lesions, classified them on the basis of morphological features, and determined their distribution patterns through direct measurements of cadaveric spines as well as examining their associations with age. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Endplate lesions may play a role in disc degeneration and back pain; however, related research has been rare. While Schmorl's nodes have received some attention, other endplate pathologies have been largely ignored. A systematic study of endplate lesions

ISSLS prize winner: Lumbar vertebral endplate lesions: associations with disc degeneration and back pain history.

STUDY DESIGN: An autopsy study. OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between various types of lumbar endplate lesions, disc degeneration (DD), and back pain history. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The well-innervated vertebral endplate has been suspected as a source of back pain. Previously, we observed 4 types of lumbar endplate lesions with distinct morphological characteristics. Their roles in DD and back pain remain unclear. METHODS: From a lumbar spine archive of 136 men (mean age, 52 yr), back pain, back injury, and occupation history data for 69 subjects and discography data for 443 d

The spectrum of traumatic Schmorl's nodes: identification and treatment options in 3 patients.

Schmorl's nodes may be present as a simple endplate intravertebral herniation following trauma or as a large cystic lesion of the vertebral body. In this article, we report on 3 patients with severe back pain following trauma resulting in traumatic Schmorl's nodes and pathologic fracture of the vertebral body. All 3 cases had antecedent trauma. Radiographs showed a cystic lesion in the vertebral body through the endplate with surrounding bony edema, indicative of fracture. In 2 cases, the integrity of the vertebral body was severely compromised, requiring vertebrectomy and fusion. The wide spe

Vertebral pathologies and related activity patterns in two mediaeval populations from Spain.

The main aim of this study was to explore the usefulness of several types of vertebral pathology as activity markers in osteological populations. A total of 2165 vertebrae from 124 individuals were studied. They were derived from cemeteries in two villages: Villanueva de Soportilla (Burgos, north of Spain), with a Christian population, and La Torrecilla (Granada, south of Spain), inhabited by Muslims. Degenerative joint diseases, Schmorl's nodes, compression fractures and spondylolysis with spondylolisthesis were analysed in individuals and separate vertebral pieces. All pathological condition

Magnetic resonance imaging characterization of vertebral endplate changes in the dog.

Spinal MR images acquired from canine patients over a 7-year period were reviewed for the presence of vertebral endplate changes. Seventy-five dogs with 76 distinct lesions were identified. Presumptive diagnoses fell into five categories: reactive endplate changes (10 dogs/13.2%), discospondylitis (29 dogs/38.2%), vertebral osteochondrosis (7 dogs/9.2%), intravertebral disc herniation (Schmorl's nodes) (4 dogs/5.3%), and fatty infiltration (26 dogs/34.2%). Fatty infiltration occurred significantly more often in small breed dogs (P < 0.001) and tended to be multifocal. The following features we

Scheuermann kyphosis in nonhuman primates.

STUDY DESIGN: A cadaveric survey of the thoracic spines of extant species of nonbipedal primates for the presence of Scheuermann kyphosis. OBJECTIVE: To determine the presence and prevalence of Scheuermann kyphosis in quadrupedal species of the closest living relatives to humans to demonstrate that bipedalism is not an absolute requirement for the development of Scheuermann kyphosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The etiology of Scheuermann kyphosis remains poorly understood. Biomechanical factors associated with upright posture are thought to play a role in the development of the disorder. To

Skeletal and dental indicators of health in the late mediaeval (12-15th century) population from Nin, southern Croatia.

A comprehensive bioarchaeological study of the late mediaeval (12-15th century) skeletal sample from Nin was carried out in order to test the historically documented hypothesis that during the late mediaeval period Nin sustained a period of rapid development that resulted in it becoming one of the major urban centres on the eastern Adriatic coast. The analysed pathological changes (alveolar bone disease, dental caries, dental enamel hypoplasia, cribra orbitalia, periostitis, tuberculosis, Schmorl's nodes, vertebral osteoarthritis, and bone fractures) indicate a relatively good quality of life

Vertebral pathologies in two early modern period (16th-19th century) populations from Croatia.

In order to test to what degree Schmorl's nodes (SN), osteophytosis of the vertebral bodies (VO), and osteoarthritis of the articular facets (OA) are useful indicators of activity-related stress, an analysis of their frequencies and severity of expression was conducted in two early Modern period skeletal samples from Croatia--Koprivno and Sisak. Historic and contemporary ethnographic sources suggest that living conditions were more demanding in Koprivno, and that a sexual division of labor existed in both populations. A total of 2,552 vertebral bodies (990 from Koprivno and 1,562 from Sisak) a

Menopause causes vertebral endplate degeneration and decrease in nutrient diffusion to the intervertebral discs.

The vasculature in the outer annulus supplies only the periphery of the disc so that nutrition to the bulk of the disc, including all the inner annulus and nucleus pulposus, is derived from the vertebral epiphyseal end arteries where nutrients diffuse across the cartilaginous endplate to reach the disc. In this regard the vertebral endplate plays an important role in disc nutrition. Compromise of diffusion of nutrients to the disc cells may play a large part in the progression or even initiation of disc degeneration. Increasing evidence suggests that estrogen deficiency also influence the seve

Schmorl's node may cause an increased FDG activity.

Schmorl's node is an intraspongious disc herniation, which is formed within the vertebral body through a cartilaginous endplate. Schmorl's nodes are commonly seen at radiographic examination or autopsy. Schmorl's nodes are generally considered to be asymptomatic. In this article, we demonstrate the incidental findings of moderate FDG uptake in the Schmorl's node.

Schmorl's nodes in an American military population: frequency, formation, and etiology.

This research investigates the frequency of Schmorl's nodes in differing populations, with new data from a skeletal sample from the Central Identification Laboratory (CIL) at the Joint Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Accounting Command, while also reviewing the etiology of Schmorl's node formation. Processes implicated in Schmorl's node formation include trauma, old age, disease, intrinsic abnormalities, and biomechanical factors, and they correlate with Schmorl's node formation to varying degrees. A survey of research from the anthropology and medical literature revealed Schmorl's node popu

Intervertebral disc degeneration: new insights based on "skipped" level disc pathology.

OBJECTIVE: Typically, age and abnormal physical loading ("wear and tear") have been associated with the development of intervertebral disc degeneration. In the past decade, various additional etiologic factors for disc degeneration have been sporadically reported in the literature; however, many investigators continue to place tremendous emphasis on the effects of age and biomechanics associated with disc degeneration. The aim of this study was to provide additional insight into the notion that age and biomechanics are key factors in the development of disc degeneration. To this end, we addres

Rami Communicans Nerve Block for the Treatment of Symptomatic Schmorl's Nodes -A Case Report-.

Histologically, Schmorl's nodes are defined as the loss of nuclear material through the cartilage plate, growth plate, and end plate into the vertebral body. Most Schmorl's nodes are asymptomatic, although there are some reports of symptomatic Schmorl's nodes, which should be treated similarly to vertebral compression fractures, with conservative treatment as the first choice. We report the case that we reduced the pain by blocking the ramus communicans nerve in a patient with Schmorl's node.

Lumbar spine: agreement in the interpretation of 1.5-T MR images by using the Nordic Modic Consensus Group classification form.

PURPOSE: To evaluate intra- and interobserver agreement for the interpretation of lumbar 1.5-T magnetic resonance (MR) images in a community setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study design was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Ramón y Cajal Hospital. According to Spanish law, for this type of study, no informed consent was necessary. Five radiologists from three hospitals twice interpreted lumbar MR examination results in 53 patients with low back pain, with at least a 14-day interval between assessments. Radiologists were unaware of the clinical and demographic characteristi
