Long-term mortality and risk of chronic kidney disease in children following severe malaria complicated by acute kidney injury: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric acute kidney injury (AKI) is a complication of severe malaria, but its long-term outcomes remain poorly defined in low-income and middle-income countries. We aimed to evaluate the long-term association between paediatric AKI and kidney outcomes and mortality following severe malaria. METHODS: We pooled data from two prospective cohorts of Ugandan children (ie, those aged 6 months-12 years) admitted to hospital with severe malaria between 2008 and 2017. Children with stored admission blood samples available for creatinine measurement were included in the analysis. Surviv

The importance of dietary patterns and appetite for the association between in utero exposure to malaria and fasting plasma glucose among adolescents in rural Ghana.

OBJECTIVE: In rural Ghana, in utero exposure to malaria is associated with 0.20 mmol/L higher fasting plasma glucose (FPG) in adolescence. We aimed to determine whether appetite and food intake mediate this association. METHODS: We used data of 155 mother-child pairs who were recruited at delivery in 2000 with data on in utero exposure to malaria. In 2015, we assessed appetite, food intake, and cardio-metabolic traits of the teenaged children. Mediation analysis was used to determine the contributions of increased appetite and dietary patterns to the observed infection-FPG-association. RESUL

Analysis of the therapeutic gap for Trypanosoma cruzi infection in Colombia (2012 - 2022).

BACKGROUND: In 2017, an estimated 1.2% of the population at risk for Chagas disease (CD) in Colombia was screened, and only 0.4% were treated. The recent implementation of CD-related Care roadmap has improved access to diagnosis and treatment. However, a therapeutic gap (TG) persists. OBJECTIVES: In this work, we aim to analyse the TG for Trypanosoma cruzi/CD infection in Colombia over the last years. METHODS: This is a descriptive study estimating the TG for T. cruzi/CD infection between 2012 and 2022. TG is defined as the number of people with a confirmed infection who have the indication

Financial toxicity and the economic burden of Chagas disease: a scoping review.

This scoping review mapped, synthesized, and critically analyzed the evidence on financial toxicity in Chagas disease, focusing on its determinants, impacts, and management strategies. Financial toxicity refers to the financial burden and distress experienced by individuals and their families as a result of healthcare expenses. The review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Comprehensive searches were conducted across seven electronic databases and the gray literature. Studies were selected and data extracted independently using the population-exposu

First detection of pfhrp2 and pfhrp3 gene deletions in Niger Republic: a retrospective sub-analysis of biological samples.

BACKGROUND: Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) based on histidine-rich protein 2 (HRP2) are the main diagnostic tool for malaria in Niger and many countries in sub-Saharan Africa. However, deletions of the P. falciparum hrp2 and hrp3 genes can compromise RDT performance, and pose a threat to diagnostic accuracy. Although these deletions were reported in several regions of Africa, Asia and South America, no molecular data on pfhrp2/3 were previously available for Niger. METHODS: The present study is a retrospective sub-analysis of biological samples derived from a therapeutic efficacy study (TES) c

Mechanisms of nematicide evasion in plant-parasitic nematodes: From molecular adaptation to evolution-aware management.

Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) cause substantial global crop losses, yet the effectiveness of chemical nematicides is declining due to adaptive responses in nematode populations. Current understanding of nematicide resistance remains incomplete, often limited to target-site mutations and metabolic detoxification. This review addresses this gap by providing an integrated perspective on how PPNs evade nematicides across molecular, physiological, and ecological scales. We synthesize established resistance mechanisms alongside underexplored strategies, including cuticle remodeling, behavioral av

Molecular and histopathological evaluation of intestinal mucosal damage associated with coccidiosis in naturally infected lambs.

Coccidiosis, caused by Eimeria species, is a major cause of economic loss in sheep farming, leading to diarrhea, growth retardation, and mortality in young animals. This study aimed to characterize the intestinal pathology of naturally acquired coccidiosis in lambs and to evaluate the molecular response of the intestinal mucosa through the expression of five target genes. Lambs were classified into Control, Mild, Moderate, and Severe groups (n = 6/group) based on histopathological scoring of seven parameters: villus morphology, epithelial integrity, parasitic burden, epithelial hyperplasia, cr

Severe Plasmodium falciparum infection with multi-organ involvement in an asplenic patient: a case report.

Plasmodium falciparum is the leading cause of severe malaria. The spleen plays a central role in the clearance of the infection in conjunction with antimalarial treatment. Splenectomized patients lack sufficient clearance functions. We report a case of severe P. falciparum infection with multi-organ involvement acquired in Uganda in a splenectomized patient with a persistently high parasitemia level despite appropriate antimalarial treatment. The case emphasizes the challenges associated with severe malaria in asplenic patients.

Cyclosporiasis in Solid Organ and Hematopoietic Cell Transplant Recipients: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention.

BACKGROUND: Cyclospora cayetanensis is a foodborne coccidian protozoan that causes prolonged, often relapsing watery diarrhea. Once considered largely a travel-associated infection, it has become a recurring cause of large, domestically acquired, produce-associated outbreaks in temperate countries. The 2026 US season was the largest on record and prompted a CDC Health Advisory, placing substantial numbers of solid organ transplant (SOT) and hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients at risk of exposure. AIM: To provide a practical, transplant-specific approach to the diagnosis, treatment,

Plasmodium falciparum histidine rich protein 2 plasma concentrations from uncomplicated and severe malaria patients estimated by rapid test band intensity.

BACKGROUND: Unlike peripheral blood parasitaemia, plasma concentrations of PfHRP2 has been established as a measure of total body parasite burden in patients with falciparum malaria, which is prognostic for progression to severe malaria and case fatality. Plasma PfHRP2 concentrations are typically quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) methods. We assessed whether band intensity on a PfHRP2-based ultrasensitive rapid diagnostic test (RDT) can provide a semi-quantitative measure for plasma PfHRP2 concentrations. METHODS: Plasma samples from 60 African patients with severe f

[Leishmaniasis].

Leishmaniasis is a globally rising parasitic disease. In Germany, it mainly affects travelers returning from endemic areas such as the Mediterranean region. It is caused by single-celled Leishmania parasites, which enter the skin through the bite of sandflies and multiply within the host's cells. Clinical presentation varies significantly depending on the pathogen species and the patient's immune status-ranging from the visceral form to various cutaneous manifestations (localized cutaneous, diffuse cutaneous, mucocutaneous). Cutaneous leishmaniasis often manifests with a delay of several weeks

Mosquito Meets Crystal.

Combatting malaria, a disease afflicting more than 250 million people annually according to the World Health Organization (WHO), requires insecticides as part of integrated vector management. Indoor residual spraying (IRS) of crystalline contact insecticides and insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) decorated with insecticide crystals are estimated to have reduced malaria mortality in Africa by 60% in the 21st century. However, resistance now threatens malaria control, spurring the development of new insecticides, a process that requires substantial resources, anddiscovery time while posingenvir

BDF6 Deficiency Severely Compromises Intracellular Amastigote Development and Infectivity of Trypanosoma cruzi.

Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, relies on complex gene regulatory mechanisms to adapt to its diverse host environments. In recent years, it has been established that epigenetics plays an essential role in these mechanisms via the regulation of chromatin structure. Bromodomain-containing factors (BDFs), known for recognizing acetylated lysines on histones, have emerged as key factors in chromatin remodeling complexes. Among the eight predicted BDFs in T. cruzi, BDF6 is part of a TINTIN-like complex with MRGx and MRGBP, homologous to components of the NuA4/TIP60 chromat

Not all infected fish become mushy: phenotypic expression underestimates Unicapsula seriolae infection in yellowtail kingfish (Seriola lalandi).

Yellowtail Kingfish (YTK) (Seriola lalandi) is widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific and is a significant recreational and commercial species in Australia. In New South Wales (NSW), a post-cooking mushy flesh condition has been reported, though its cause remains unconfirmed. This study combined morpho-molecular diagnostics with a citizen-science mushy fish reporting platform to identify associated parasites and to map the spatio-temporal distribution of mushy flesh and infections in NSW. Unicapsula seriolae was detected in 38.9% (95% exact CI: 23.1-56.5%) of YTK donated by recreationa
