INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Parasitic leiomyomas are a type of extra-uterine fibroid that develop outside the uterus and thus receive their blood supply from surrounding structures. While most cases are iatrogenic, spontaneous occurrences are rare and often pose diagnostic challenges due to atypical locations.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 28-year-old woman, para 2, with no prior abdominal or pelvic surgery, who presented with a 5-year history of intermittent lower abdominal pain. Ultrasound suggested a pedunculated mass arising from the uterine fundus, mimicking an ovarian endo

Giant primary hydatid cysts of the sigmoid mesocolon are exceptionally rare, and their exact site of origin may be difficult to establish before surgery. We report a 51-year-old woman with an 8-year history of progressive abdominal distension and vague abdominal discomfort. CT showed a multilocular cystic lesion of size 30 × 22 × 28 cm extending from the pelvis to the upper abdomen, with internal septations and multiple daughter cysts. Echinococcus serology was positive, with no radiological evidence of hepatic or pulmonary hydatid disease. The patient had received several previous courses of

INTRODUCTION: Malaria remains a significant public health challenge in tropical regions. The disease is driven by multiple Anopheles vector species with varied ecological and behavioral traits. In transitional zones like the forested Pouth-Kelle community, detailed knowledge of vector dynamics and disease transmission remains limited. This study aimed to characterize local Anopheles species composition, biting behavior, and malaria transmission indicators to guide control strategies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From February 2021 to January 2022, adult mosquitoes were monthly collected indoors and

INTRODUCTION: Eimeria tenella (E. tenella) preferentially invades the cecum of young chickens and causes enormous economic losses to the global poultry industry.
METHODS: In this study, we established chicken infection models for the virulent parent strain and its precocious attenuated line, and collected samples at 2 dpi and 6 dpi as two critical time points. By integrating pathogenicity evaluation, transcriptome sequencing, detection of mucosal immune-related indicators, and homologous challenge protection assays, we systematically revealed the distinct molecular mechanisms underlying strai

Effective health communication remains a critical challenge across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where systemic barriers hinder disease prevention and healthcare equity. This evidence synthesis evaluates communication interventions through a comprehensive analysis of behavioral strategies, mobile health innovations, and community engagement approaches. Our findings reveal short message service (SMS)-based systems significantly improve malaria management outcomes, while demonstrating limited efficacy for chronic disease contexts. Behavioral interventions show particular promise for maternal care de

The PfPCRCR complex is essential for invasion of human erythrocytes by the deadliest malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum. Antibodies against each subunit of PfPCRCR prevent erythrocyte invasion and the PfRH5 component is currently the most advanced blood-stage malaria vaccine. Central within PfPCRCR is PfRIPR. This complex molecule contains a core and a flexible tail and allows PfPCRCR to bridge the parasite and erythrocyte during invasion. In this study, we generated a small panel of human monoclonal antibodies against PfRIPR. We structurally characterised four PfRIPR tail-binding antibod

Female nematodes were collected from the intestines of a road-killed Yucatan Neotropical rattlesnake, Crotalus tzabcan, in Yucatan, Mexico. Morphometric analysis of the nematode specimens allowed their identification to the genus Kalicephalus. However, the absence of male specimens prevented species-level identification. Notably, second- and third-stage larvae were observed in the reproductive tract of some Kalicephalus females. Additionally, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene, and the 28S rRNA gene (28S) were amplified and sequenced. Pa

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis sp. is a highly prevalent anaerobic intestinal protozoan increasingly associated with gastrointestinal disorders. Its survival within the gut microenvironment depends on metabolic pathways such as glycolysis, where glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) plays a central role, alongside interactions with nitric oxide (NO) derived from host defenses and surrounding microbiota. The emergence of metronidazole resistance necessitates exploration of alternative therapeutic strategies.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the in vitro effects of metronidazole, metformin, and Alli

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis remains a major public health concern in endemic settings. The Pediatric Praziquantel Consortium has developed a new paediatric treatment, arpraziquantel, for preschool-aged children. Because the treatment is dosed according to body weight, dose determination by scales poses operational challenges in community-based mass treatment campaigns. This study assessed the performance of the Pediatric Advanced Weight Prediction in the Emergency Room Extra-Long Mid-Arm Circumference (PAWPER XL-MAC) tape for weight estimation during mass drug administration in Uganda and Côte

BACKGROUND: No analyses have explored the differential clinical characteristics of cyclosporiasis compared with other diarrheal etiologies.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of 118 children with diarrheal illnesses. Stool samples were analyzed using Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) staining and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the ssu rRNA gene. Positive PCR samples were sequenced to identify phylogroups (A, B and C). Quantitative variables were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test. Qualitative associations were analyzed using odds ratios (ORs) and Fisher exact or χ 2 tests. A parsimonio

Effective vaccines against Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, are urgently needed. Here, we report the design and in silico validation of a novel multiepitope vaccine construct targeting the key surface proteins ASP-2 and gp82. Using a comprehensive immunoinformatics pipeline, we identified and selected 38 potent T-cell (CTL/HTL) and B-cell epitopes, ensuring high antigenicity, immunogenicity, and safety. The final chimeric protein, integrated with adjuvants and stabilizing linkers, demonstrated favorable physicochemical properties, high solubility, and was predicted to

BACKGROUND: Trypanocide resistance is an escalating threat to African animal trypanosomosis control, yet how dogs are actually treated for trypanosomosis, by who, with what drugs, and under what oversight, remains poorly characterized despite the documented presence of resistant trypanosome populations in this neglected host compartment.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional survey interpreted within a One Health framework, grounded in data from Enugu North Senatorial Zone, Southeastern Nigeria, we integrate previously published molecular and epidemiological data on canine trypanosomes with original

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused and spread by female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is a global health concern, especially in tropical areas, where the WHO Africa region published 94% of malaria cases and 95% of deaths related to malaria in children under 5 years old. In Rwanda, malaria continues to affect the population, where rural communities are at risk. This narrative review has the purpose of showcasing the university student contribution to advancing malaria eradication in Rwanda.
METHODOLOGY: The narrative review acquired secondary data accessed from different peer-

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a significant public health burden in Cameroon, with the Far-North region experiencing high transmission rates. Despite the widespread distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) and other control measures, the disease persists. Understanding the community's knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) is crucial for developing effective and targeted interventions. This study aimed to assess the KAP regarding malaria and its mosquito vectors among households in the Far-North region of Cameroon.
METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted

BACKGROUND: Residual spraying with pyrethroid insecticides remains the main tool in the control of vector-borne transmission of Chagas disease. However, its efficacy has been compromised in regions with pyrethroid-resistant populations of triatomines, as in the Gran Chaco region, where Triatoma infestans has developed high levels of resistance. To cope with it, xenointoxication has emerged as a promising strategy. As part of a cluster-randomized trial aimed at evaluating the effects of treating dogs with fluralaner on (peri)domestic infestation and T. cruzi infection, we evaluated the effect o

The study was conducted from October 2024 to June 2025 at the Kombolcha ELFORA abattoir and Processing Plant to assess the prevalence and economic impact of bovine Fasciolosis in cattle sourced from three agroecological zones in northern Ethiopia. From the 382 examined bovine samples, 184 faecal samples (48.17%) and 195 livers (51.05%) tested positive for Fasciolosis. Infection rates were highest in cattle with poor body condition (51.55% in faecal samples and 54.64% in livers), followed by medium (47.62% and 50%) and good body condition groups (20% and 25%, respectively), with significant dif

BACKGROUND: Entomological surveillance provides critical information for National Malaria Programs (NMPs), yet there is limited evidence on the cost-effectiveness of alternative sampling approaches. Conventional surveillance often relies on purposive, fixed-site sampling, which may produce biased or non-representative data. To address these limitations, the Entomological Adaptive Sampling Framework (EASF) was developed to optimize sampling strategies based on spatiotemporal vector dynamics. This study evaluates the costs and cost-effectiveness of EASF compared to routine entomological surveill

Molecular surveillance of malaria vectors remains critically underutilized in sub-Saharan Africa, largely due to limited human capacity and technical resources, despite the region bearing the highest global burden of malaria. In a North-South collaborative effort, Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) built capacity and improved on existing computational capabilities in line with molecular surveillance of Anopheles gambiae, the primary malaria vector in sub-Saharan Africa. We interrogated an amplicon panel capable of simultaneously detecting 55
