Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) remain an often-underestimated challenge in European pig production, affecting animal health, performance, and economic outcomes. The predominant species, Ascaris (A.) suum, Oesophagostomum (O.) spp., and Trichuris (T.) suis, impair growth, feed efficiency, and carcass quality, whilst also contributing to reproductive losses and liver condemnation. Moreover, GIN can modulate host immunity, interfere with vaccine responses, and influence coinfection outcomes, thereby compromising overall herd health. The zoonotic potential of A. suum and T. suis further highligh

BACKGROUND: American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) caused by Leishmania braziliensis is characterized by marked clinical and immunopathological heterogeneity. While cellular immune responses have been extensively investigated, the contribution of humoral immunity, particularly against parasite-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) components, remains poorly understood. Here, we evaluated systemic IgG responses against EVs derived from L. braziliensis isolates associated with distinct clinical forms of ATL and assessed their association with disease presentation and therapeutic outcome.

As in humans, therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) has been investigated in veterinary medicine for managing immune-mediated diseases such as canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL). TPE may improve clinical outcomes by removing circulating immune complexes and excess antibodies; however, its physiological effects must be understood to ensure safety. Given the scarcity of studies in animals, this study evaluated the effects of centrifugation-based TPE in dogs with CVL receiving fresh frozen plasma (FFP) as replacement fluid. Thirty-one dogs with CVL that failed to respond to conventional therapy were

BACKGROUND: Ticks and tick-borne diseases pose a major threat to livestock productivity in tropical and subtropical regions, by transmitting pathogens of veterinary and public health concern, including Theileria species. Despite the threats posed to the large ruminant industry, integrated studies on the causative agent of tropical theileriosis and its tick vectors from the same infected hosts, along with their associated risk factors, remain limited in northern Pakistan. This study investigated Theileria infection, its associated tick species, and host- and environmental-related risk factors i

Annexins are Ca² ⁺ - and membrane-binding proteins conserved across eukaryotes and involved in diverse membrane-associated processes, including unconventional protein secretion (UPS). In the intestinal parasite Giardia lamblia, annexins are represented by a family of 21 proteins termed alpha-giardins (αGs), all of which lack classical signal peptides yet are detected at the parasite surface and in the secretome. Here, we present a comprehensive functional analysis of αGs, with a particular focus on α1-giardin (α1G), a leading vaccine candidate against giardiasis and a putative virulence-associ

Vitiligo is an acquired depigmentation disease with an unknown etiology. Several theories on its etiology have been proposed, including autoimmune mechanisms, oxidative stress, genetic factors, environmental factors, and lack of melanocyte growth factor. Recent studies have demonstrated a possible correlation between microbial infections and the development or consequences of vitiligo. This study aims to investigate the potential association between microbial infections and vitiligo, focusing on identifying any explainable correlations between these two. A systematic search was performed on al

Chagas disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, poses a significant global health burden. Current treatment relies solely on benznidazole and nifurtimox, both with limited efficacy and significant adverse effects. In vitro phenotype-based screening enables identification of alternative treatments. While epimastigote-based screening is not suitable for primary drug discovery, it provides valuable complementary data for compound evaluation. However, the lack of standardized experimental conditions across studies compromises reproducibility and inter-laboratory comparability. Here, we optimized expe

Several large scabies outbreaks have occurred in the Amhara region of Ethiopia since 2015, and biomedical interventions focused on mass drug administration are often deployed to contain the disease. However, there is a persistent scabies incidence in the Amhara region. To understand this, we sought to explore how people living in Debre Elias understand and seek to manage scabies in their everyday lives. We collected data via a rapid ethnographic approach which included observations and semi-structured interviews. Fieldwork was conducted from February to July 2022 and involved 57 interviews wit

The genus Trypanosoma is vulnerable to oxidative stress, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) suppress Trypanosoma proliferation. We investigated the effects of alpha-tocopheryloxyacetic acid (α-TEA), a stable vitamin E-derived mitocan, on the course of Trypanosoma congolense IL-3000 infection in mice and in an in vitro culture. C57BL/6 J male mice infected with 3 × 104 T. congolense IL-3000 cells were fed a 0.25% or 0.75% α-TEA diet for 7 or 28 days from day 3 of infection. The survival duration of all of the α-TEA-treated mice was significantly longer than that of the control mice fed a regular

As the non-human primate models with the closest genetic relationship to humans, laboratory monkeys are indispensable in life sciences research, drug development, and biological product evaluation. However, infectious diseases either endemic in laboratory monkey colonies or acquired during breeding and husbandry-for example, B virus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis-threaten animal welfare and colony security, while also elevating zoonotic transmission risks and compromising the reliability of research data. The diversity, complexity, and clinically insidious nature of diseases in laboratory monk

Hookworm infection, caused by Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale, is prevalent in areas with poor sanitation. Coprology is the gold standard for diagnosis, but it has low sensitivity in low parasite loads. The objective of this study was to evaluate four Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) targets for molecular diagnosis. Stool samples were collected from 180 residents of the rural community Tierra Blanca, Bolívar State, Venezuela, in which coproparasitological tests were performed. Four DNA extraction methods were standardized, and four PCR techniques were studied: NaITS1F/NaITS1R (ITS1

INTRODUCTION: Although 5-nitroimidazoles, primarily metronidazole (MTZ), are the primary drugs of choice for trichomoniasis, resistance to metronidazole appears to be increasing. Considering observed differences in drug resistance across various populations, this systematic review and meta-analysis was designed to determine the global prevalence of 5-nitroimidazole resistance among T. vaginalis.
METHODS: We conducted a thorough search of international databases, including Web of Science, Medline, Scopus, SID, Magiran, and Iran-Medex using a variety of relevant keywords and their synonyms. Stu

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease (CD) is a leading tropical disease and the most prevalent parasitic infection in Latin America, affecting >7 million people globally and ∼240 000-350 000 individuals within the United States. Though known to be endemic to Latin America, prevalence in the United States is also increasing with improved recognition of locally acquired cases, especially in Texas. Autochthonous cases occur throughout the Southern United States, but the geographic range is anticipated to shift northwards as a result of climate change. Chagas disease is referred to as a "silent and silenced

We report a case of a 74-year-old man with a one-year history of ulcerative colitis in remission who developed low-grade fever, dry cough, progressive dyspnea, loss of appetite, and an eight-kg weight loss over 12 weeks. Oral mesalamine (2.4 g/day) had been initiated 12 weeks before presentation, with respiratory symptoms developing approximately three weeks after initiation. Despite initial antibiotic therapy, his symptoms progressively worsened, and he developed hypoxemia requiring hospitalization. Investigations revealed leukocytosis with marked peripheral eosinophilia, elevated C-reactive

BACKGROUND: Parasite infections threaten both domesticated and wildlife populations. Shared resources between wildlife and domesticated ruminants increase the risk of cross-transmission, underscoring the need for infection research. This study aimed to determine the composition, prevalence, and habitat-dependent patterns of gastrointestinal parasites in endangered Himalayan musk deer (Moschus leucogaster) and sympatric livestock (chauri and horses) in Lapchi Valley of Gaurishankar Conservation Area.
METHOD: Using a cross-sectional, comparative, systematic, and grazing regime-based study desig

Human lice are hematophagous ectoparasites of worldwide distribution and public health concern. Despite their medical importance, the genetic diversity of these ectoparasites remains poorly documented, with only one prior study conducted in France. In this study, we investigated the distribution and genetic diversity of human louse populations collected from patients referred to Avicenne Hospital, northern Paris, between 2019 and 2023. A total of 209 specimens, one per patient, were examined: 186 head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis), 11 body lice (Pediculus h. corporis), and 12 pubic lice (Pt

Host and parasite body size frequently scale positively (often referred to as Harrison's rule), potentially as a result of fundamental constraints on large parasite species simply being morphologically incapable of infecting small host species, or through a variety of alternative proposed mechanisms. Regardless of mechanism, Harrison's rule does have some empirical support. Here, we leverage several trait databases and a large set of host-helminth parasite interactions to gauge support for Harrison's rule in parasitic helminths. We fit generalized additive models from both the host perspective
