BACKGROUND: Low back pain is a leading cause of work-related disability worldwide. Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) are commonly used as nonoperative treatments for patients with degenerative lumbar spine pathology. It is imperative to further elucidate the association between preoperative ESIs and postoperative outcomes in this population. This study seeks to evaluate the association between the timing of preoperative ESIs and the incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs) in patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery.
METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed patients who underwent lumba

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Posterior cervical foraminotomy (PCF) is a motion-preserving procedure for cervical radiculopathy. Traditional guidelines recommend limiting facet resection to less than 50% to preserve spinal stability, a threshold derived from cadaveric biomechanical studies. However, the clinical relevance of this limit has not been fully validated.
PURPOSE: To evaluate whether facet joint resection exceeding 50% during PCF adversely affects clinical outcomes or radiographic stability.
STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: Retrospective cohort study conducted at a single tertiary referral center.

INTRODUCTION: Supracondylar fractures in children often result in malunion and subsequent cubitus varus or valgus deformity. While often considered cosmetic, these deformities can lead to pain, functional impairment, and other complications. Corrective osteotomy is a common treatment option, with step-cut osteotomy being a preferred method due to its effectiveness and relative simplicity. This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of step-cut osteotomy in correcting post-traumatic cubitus deformities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted on patients presenting with po

OBJECTIVE: High-grade spondylolisthesis (HGSL) is a rare condition characterized by a vertebral slippage of more than 50% relative to the inferior adjacent vertebra. Despite the range of surgical techniques available, there is no consensus regarding the optimal management approach for HGSL. Although various interventions are documented in the literature, definitive guidelines remain absent. In this systematic review the authors aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of the chronological evolution of surgical management strategies for HGSL, along with the clinical and radiographic outcomes a

BACKGROUND: Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS), employing mechanisms like malabsorption, volume restriction, and metabolic changes via the gastrointestinal tract, is the most effective long-term treatment for obesity and related metabolic disorders. Obesity affects over one-third of the U.S. population and is closely linked to low back pain (LBP) due to increased spinal loading and altered alignment. Weight loss following surgery may alleviate LBP symptoms and improve spinal health by reducing mechanical stress.
PURPOSE: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the impact of MBS

INTRODUCTION: The minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) technique has become a popular and effective option for treating lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis, especially in elderly patients. This systematic review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the long-term results of MIS-TLIF for patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis.
METHODS: We thoroughly reviewed and analyzed studies from databases like PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar, covering research published from 2015-2024. We used random-effects models to estimate overall prevalence, and w

OBJECTIVE: Despite many available surgical techniques, the optimal method to achieve posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) is unclear. This study compares the efficacy of open transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF), minimally invasive TLIF (MIS-TLIF), and midline lumbar interbody fusion (MidLIF), based on patient-reported outcome measures and radiographic parameters.
METHODS: A retrospective review of a prospectively collected institutional spine quality database was performed to examine the medical records of patients who received a 1- or 2-level PLIF from January 2018 through Apri

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease distributed across numerous countries and regions worldwide, presenting with diverse clinical manifestations. The most common complication is spondylitis, which is diagnosed primarily through imaging studies. However, in resource-limited areas, the imaging examinations necessary for diagnosing brucellosis-related spondylitis are often inaccessible. The objective of this study is to establish a simple and readily predictive score within brucellosis patients to screen for spinal involvement.
METHODS: We retrospectively collected patient data with br

Osteoblastoma is a rare benign bone tumor that may exhibit locally aggressive behavior. The cervical spine is the most frequently involved region, and delayed diagnosis can lead to progressive symptoms and neurological deficits. Surgical excision remains the definitive treatment to prevent morbidity. A 15-year-old male presented with a 14-month history of persistent neck pain and right upper limb radiculopathy. Radiological evaluation identified an expansile lesion arising from the right transverse process of the sixth cervical vertebra (C6), involving adjacent neurovascular structures. The le

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare, fatal, and irreversible disease that shares some key clinical features with radiculopathy, including muscle atrophy, muscle cramps, and fasciculation. The aim of this study was to find a reliable method to differentiate these two diseases. Machine learning was used to discover new clinical biomarkers for the differential diagnosis of ALS from radiculopathy using nerve conduction study (NCS) data from patients. Data preparation and feature selection were performed by a random forest classifier algorithm, as well as a confusion matrix tool for model

INTRODUCTION: Cervical spine (mostly atlanto-axial) accounts for over half of the acute traumatic disruptions of the spinal cord and its coverings; alongside its persisting neurological deficits. Two-thirds of the etiology were fairly evenly distributed between traffic crashes, falls, assault and other occupation-related injuries. We described the etiological mechanisms, neuro-anatomical level, severity, treatment and outcomes of traumatic cervical spinal-cord and spine injuries (C-SCI+SI).
