BACKGROUND: The characteristics and prognosis of HIV-associated Kaposi sarcoma (KS) among people living with HIV (PLWH), and their association with HHV-8 viral load are not well understood in Japan.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of PLWH diagnosed with KS at Tokyo Medical University from 2000 to 2023.
RESULTS: Seventy cases of KS were identified; HHV-8 viral load data were available for twenty-three of these cases. The median age was 43 years (interquartile range [IQR], 11 years). The median HIV viral load at diagnosis was 150,000 copies/mL (IQR, 560,000 copies/mL). The median C

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among women living with HIV worldwide, particularly in developing countries. In Ethiopia, this population faces a substantial burden of cervical cancer, marked by high rates of precancerous cervical lesions and low uptake of screening services. Therefore, this study aims to determine the prevalence of cervical cancer and identify its associated factors among women living with HIV attending referral hospitals in the Amhara Region, Northwest Ethiopia, to inform effective prevention and control strategies. METHODS: A

PURPOSE: Few data describe the modern epidemiology of pediatric HIV-associated cancers in sub-Saharan Africa, home to over 80% of the world's children living with HIV. This study evaluated the incidence of cancers among these children over 15 years after widespread antiretroviral therapy (ART) adoption in Malawi.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study leveraging multiple independent data sources comprehensive of all cancer diagnoses among children living with HIV in Northern and Central Malawi between 2010 and 2024. HIV-associated cancers were defined as those can

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority men (SMM) living with HIV face an elevated risk of anal cancer, and SMM-affirming HIV clinics serve as vital entry points for cancer prevention. We evaluated human papillomavirus (HPV) knowledge, vaccine acceptability and whether time living with HIV was associated with anal cancer symptom awareness.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted at an HIV clinic offering anal cancer prevention in Abuja, Nigeria. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize HPV knowledge and vaccine acceptability. Multivariable negative binomial regression evaluated the number of

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer screening remains vital in the early detection of precancerous lesions and promotes better treatment outcomes. Though evidence suggested multiple sexual partners and HIV infection as risk factors for cervical cancer, limited studies have investigated how multiple sexual partners and HIV infection impact cervical cancer screening in Ghana. Therefore, this study assessed the association of multiple sexual partnership and HIV testing on cervical cancer screening among Ghanaian women of reproductive age.
METHODS: The study utilized data from the 2022 Ghana Demographic

PURPOSE: While the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), specifically in the oropharynx subsite, is increasing in western populations, limited data exist on prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa. This study describes the prevalence and associated risk factors of HPV association among individuals with HNSCC presenting to Muhimbili National Hospital, the largest public tertiary referral center in Tanzania, a country in East Africa.
METHODS: Participants with HNSCC presenting between July 2020 and June 2022 were prospectively recruited in t

BACKGROUND: Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) causes several diseases among people with HIV (PWH), including Kaposi sarcoma (KS), multicentric Castleman disease (MCD), primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), and KSHV inflammatory cytokine syndrome (KICS), known as KSHV-associated diseases (KAD). Genetic diversity in the viral K1 gene defines KSHV subtypes, but clinical significance remains unclear.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 143 PWH with KAD treated between 2004 and 2024. KSHV-DNA was extracted from various clinical samples and sequenced using next-generation and Sange

BACKGROUND: N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modifications of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and cellular RNA contribute to regulation of viral and host gene expression. RNA m6A dysregulation has been implicated in multiple cancers. However, the role of m6A modifications in HIV-1-associated cancers remains unclear. Here, we aim to address this important question using clinical samples. METHODS: Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), RNA m6A levels were quantified in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 43 de-identified people living with HIV-1 (PLWH), comparing those

OBJECTIVES: AIDS remains a major global public-health challenge, with persistent care-cascade gaps driving preventable deaths, especially in LMICs. In Brazil, uneven progress and late presentation reflect social and regional inequities. We used the national notifiable diseases system (SINAN) to profile AIDS at diagnosis and identify mortality risk factors.
STUDY DESIGN: National retrospective cohort study using the SINAN from 2007 to 2022.
METHODS: We included all SINAN records of AIDS diagnoses in Brazil between 2007 and 2022. Extracted variables comprised demographics (age, sex, education,

BACKGROUND: Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) remains a significant challenge in HIV-infected individuals, with visceral KS posing a greater therapeutic dilemma due to its aggressive nature compared to the cutaneous form. The differential immune microenvironment and molecular pathology underlying this clinical disparity are poorly understood. This study aimed to compare the clinicopathological and immunophenotypic characteristics between HIV-related cutaneous and visceral KS, with a focus on the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway, key regulatory molecules, and their association with HHV8 status. METHODS: Clinical data fr

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to identify existing evidence on the lived experiences of people living with HIV and treated for anal cancer, and to identify what aspects of health and well-being are addressed in clinical guidance.
DESIGN: A preregistered protocol (Open Science Framework, 2025) guided the review. We followed the Arksey and O'Malley framework, incorporating Levac et al's refinements around stakeholder consultation. Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidance informed eligibility and data for charting, and reporting adhered to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and

BACKGROUND: Comorbidities, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, and mental health issues, negatively impact the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of people living with HIV (PLHIV). Comorbidities can increase the symptom burden, reduce functional or cognitive capacity, increase psychological distress, and reduce adherence to treatment, which can lead to poor viral suppression and other complications. METHODS: This study aimed to identify and explore comorbidities and related contextual determinants of HRQoL and long-term well-being in PLHIV that could be

BACKGROUND: Women living with human immune deficiency (WLWH) had higher risk of developing cervical cancer. Recurrence of the lesions is higher among WLWH than HIV negative women. Effective follow-up is very crucial in order to reduce the persistence of the lesions and avoid recurrence. However, less than half of the women attend yearly follow up in Ethiopia. This study investigated the barriers and facilitators of screening follow-up from the perspectives of WLWH and healthcare providers. OBJECTIVES: To explore the barriers and facilitators of cervical cancer screening follow-up among WLWH wh

OBJECTIVES: Human papillomavirus (HPV), particularly high-risk types such as HPV 16 and 18, is a major cause of cervical cancer and other cancers. Despite the United Kingdom's (UK's) commitment to cervical cancer elimination by 2040, participation in HPV screening is declining, disproportionately affecting underserved groups, including those experiencing poverty, people from minoritized racial, ethnic, gender, or sexual identity groups, and people living with HIV.
METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study to explore awareness, barriers, and facilitators to HPV self-sampling from clinician a

BACKGROUND: Patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have been gradually accepted as solid organ transplant recipients, although there is still concern that the burden of immunosuppression and HIV infection could increase the risk of post-transplant cancer.
METHODS: The risk of de novo cancer was evaluated in a prospective cohort of 272 HIV-positive and 816 matched HIV-negative liver transplant recipients in Spain (2002-2012). All tumors, except hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence and non-melanoma skin cancer, after liver transplant were considered as events and death as com

AIDS-related cancers are a major complication in HIV-infected individuals, driven by chronic immune suppression and viral oncogenesis. To better understand the dynamic interplay among healthy cells, HIV-infected cells, and cancer cells, this study proposes a fractional-order HIV-1 model using the Caputo-Fabrizio derivative. The research problem centers on how fractional-order dynamics-representing memory effects-influence the stability and long-term behavior of this biological system, particularly the conditions under which cancer persists alongside HIV infection. The model’s well-posedness is

PURPOSE: Carcinoma Cuniculatum (CC) is an exceptionally rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma with limited description in the literature. Oral Carcinoma Cuniculatum (OCC) continues to be a diagnostic dilemma as it generally presents as an indolent infection, often undergoing multiple biopsies and debridements prior to definitive diagnosis. This study aims to review the diagnostic challenges, clinical features, histopathology, and management of OCC. We specifically present a unique case of OCC in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). METHODS: A review of the current literature on

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) has been associated with a variety of diseases and is endemic in Sub-Saharan Africa. We performed KSHV-whole-genome analysis and search for APOBEC-editing to describe genetic diversity in samples issued from an endemic region. We included 15 Congolese samples including 12 saliva and whole blood samples of people living with HIV and 3 KS biopsies samples, to perform KSHV qPCR and NGS Illumina followed by KSHV typing on ORFs K1 and K15. Furthermore, we looked for APOBEC3B-mutations in KSHV-whole-genome sequences. KSHV viral load was detectable in al

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation in patients co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) represents a serious clinical concern due to shared transmission routes. HIV infection significantly alters the natural course of HBV, resulting in decreased clearance of acute infection, accelerated progression to cirrhosis, and increased liver-related mortality compared to HBV mono-infection.
AIM: To present a severe clinical case of HBV reactivation in a patient with HIV infection complicated by Kaposi sarcoma and to highlight the clinical challenges associated with irregular an
