Magnetic resonance imaging appearance of foreign-body granulomatous reactions to dermal cosmetic fillers.

Foreign body granulomas can develop after the injection of various cosmetic filling materials into the facial area to flatten wrinkles. Clinically, reactive lesions are easily mistaken for soft-tissue neoplasms or cysts. This report presents a case of foreign body granuloma in a 52-year-old female patient complaining of a painless swelling in the nasolabial region. Both clinical and histological features are described, underscoring the diagnostic role of magnetic resonance imaging findings.

Subcutaneous Granuloma Annulare.

Dear Editor, Subcutaneous granuloma annulare (SGA) is considered a rare clinical variant of granuloma annulare, a common self-healing chronic inflammatory disorder that may appear in childhood as well as in adult age (1-3). A 29-year-old female patient reported the onset of several small subcutaneous nodules on the dorsal aspect of the second interphalangeal joint of the left medius finger and the left elbow, accompanied by vague joint pain, had occurred 13 years ago. Specific markers for rheumatoid arthritis were negative, leading to a diagnosis of sero-negative rheumatoid arthritis, for whic

Minocycline for the treatment of cutaneous silicone granulomas: A case report.

Silicone oil injections are often used for soft tissue augmentation and local and general adverse effects occurring from a few months to 15 years after injection have been reported. Here, we present a case of delayed granuloma formation due to liquid injectable silicone with large extent of involvement, which precluded surgical removal. Our patient was successfully treated with minocycline, considering its anti-inflammatory, immunomodulating and antigranulomatous properties. This case presents minocycline monotherapy as a useful treatment option for the management of severe granuloma induced b

Delayed granulomatous reactions to facial cosmetic injections of polymethylmethacrylate microspheres and liquid injectable silicone: A case series.

Polymethylmethacrylate microsphere (PMMA) and liquid injectable silicone (LIS) fillers are non-biodegradable, synthetic polymers utilized for long-term soft-tissue augmentation. Delayed granulomatous reactions to permanent fillers are a rare yet significant event that can occur months to years post procedure and are often refractory to treatment and associated with significant cosmetic morbidity. We report a case series of 4 patients who developed granulomatous reactions to PMMA or LIS, 15 months to 5 years post injection. The etiology of granulomatous reactions to permanent fillers is still p

The Pathogenesis of Implant-Related Reactive Lesions: A Clinical, Histologic and Polarized Light Microscopy Study.

BACKGROUND: Peri-implant soft tissue reactive lesions (I-RLs) may jeopardize implant success and survival. To the best of the authors' knowledge, its pathogenesis is unknown. The objective of this study is to conduct a clinicopathologic and polarized light microscopy (PLM) analysis of 14 new I-RLs and compare them with comparable tooth-associated cases (T-RLs) to better understand I-RL pathogenesis. METHODS: Fifty-eight new cases of I-RL and T-RL were retrieved from the pathology department archives of Rambam Health Care Campus, Haifa, Israel. Retrospective analysis of histopathologic and cli

Silicone-induced Granuloma After Buttock Augmentation.

Liquid silicone is inexpensive, minimally antigenic, and likely noncarcinogenic. Its simplicity of use has made it popular as a soft-tissue filler in some parts of the world for patients seeking rapid soft-tissue augmentation of the face, breast, and buttocks. However, multiple reports describe the complications of silicone injections such as cellulitis, abscess, ulceration, and foreign body migration. We present an unusual complication of granulomatous reaction secondary to silicone injection for buttock augmentation, with a literature review of this entity and treatment options. Our patient

[A woman with subcutaneous nodules after buttock augmentation].

Volume augmentation of the buttocks with injectable soft-tissue fillers is a cosmetic procedure; delayed adverse effects include the formation of granulomatous inflammatory nodules. We describe a 35-year-old woman with early-stage Hodgkin's lymphoma with multiple nodular subcutaneous densities on CT scans in both gluteal regions. These were the result of frequent injections with human collagen.

Silver Nitrate Interpreted as Osseous Pathology on RadiographsTwo Case Reports.

Silver nitrate is often used topically for hemostasis. When radiography is performed after the application of silver nitrate, an artifact appears on the radiograph that may be mistaken for an abnormal calcification or a foreign body. The patients in the following two cases were treated with topical silver nitrate. In each case, radiographs taken after treatment seemed to demonstrate abnormal soft-tissue calcifications in the area of silver nitrate application. Subsequent clinical examination revealed no calcifications, and it was determined that the abnormal radiographic findings were silver n

Delayed onset porous polyethylene implant-related inflammation after orbital blowout fracture repair: four case reports.

BACKGROUND: Porous polyethylene implants are commonly used in orbital blowout fracture repair because of purported biocompatibility, durability, and low frequency of complications. Delayed inflammation related to porous polyethylene sheet implants is very rare and no case series of this condition have been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: This is a retrospective review of clinical presentations, radiographic findings, histopathological findings, treatments, and outcomes of patients who developed delayed complications in orbital blowout fracture repair using porous polyethylene sheets. Granulomatous foreign-body reactions to permanent fillers: detection of CD123+ plasmacytoid dendritic cells.

BACKGROUND: Soft-tissue augmentation with permanent fillers can lead to severe granulomatous foreign-body reactions (GFBRs), but the immune pathomechanism of this complication is still unknown. We performed conventional histologic examination and immunostaining for plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) in skin sections from patients with GFBR to 4 permanent filler agents, which have been widely used in recent decades. METHODS: Twenty-one skin biopsies were studied from 19 patients with GFBR to polyalkylimide 4% gel (PAIG, n = 10), polyacrylamide 2.5% gel (PAAG, n = 2), hydroxyethyl methacrylate

Excision of epulis granulomatosa with diode laser in 8 years old boy.

INTRODUCTION: Epulis granulomatosa is a lesion which grows from an extraction socket. It can be misdiagnosed with lesions of the same clinical appearance such as: foreign body or pyogenic granuloma, or as a herniation of the maxillary sinus. The most common treatment is surgical excision. CASE REPORT: The present article reports an Epulis granulomatosa which was removed with diode laser (810 nm) due to child's fear related to traditional surgical instruments and bleeding. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Lasers are useful for soft tissue surgery in modern dentistry, especially in relation to pediatri

Neglected Thorn Injury Mimicking Soft Tissue Mass in a Child: A Case Report.

Thorn injuries are common especially in rural areas. The diagnosis of such in children is always missed. An untreated retained thorn may cause late soft tissue and osseous complications. Herein, we report a case of neglected thorn injury mimicking soft tissue mass in an 11-year-old male child. The presence of the thorn was confirmed with ultrasound scan and computerized tomography. The child was successfully managed with removal of thorn with excision of foreign body granuloma.

Cholesterol Granuloma: An Unusual and Benign Cause of Focal FDG Uptake in the Breast Detected on PET/CT.

Cholesterol granulomas are benign lesions, rarely seen in the breast, which are indistinguishable from malignancy on anatomical imaging. The FDG PET/CT of a patient referred for melanoma staging revealed a mildly FDG-avid, soft tissue nodule in the left breast. This finding was felt unlikely to represent metastatic melanoma due to the relatively low level of uptake. The lesion was not seen on follow-up mammography. Ultrasound-guided biopsy was performed, which identified this lesion as a cholesterol granuloma. This case illustrate that cholesterol granuloma can be misinterpreted as a malignant

Persistent Vocal Fold Granuloma Following Superficial PAAG Injection Laryngoplasty: A Case Report.

The injection material polyacrylamide hydrogel (PAAG; Ferrosan, Søborg, Denmark) is often used as space filler for soft-tissue defects. PAAG is a suitable alternative to the materials used for injection laryngoplasty. Over the past decade, 427 patients have undergone injection laryngoplasty in our clinic using PAAG, and no major complications, such as material migration or foreign body granuloma, were identified. Here, we report the case of the first woman to undergo laryngomicrosurgery to remove a vocal fold granuloma that developed after a superficial injection laryngoplasty performed 4 year

[Foreign body retention after soft tissue laceration. A case of insufficient inspection and documentation].

A 52-year-old man sustained a laceration to his left eyebrow after a fall in his bathroom. His plastic glasses shattered upon impact. The patient was referred to a local emergency department. After a quick exploration by the physician on call, the wound was closed by a nurse using the Steri-Strip Wound Closure system. No further exploration or imaging was performed. Four weeks after the incident the patient presented to a dermatologist with a "foreign body sensation" at the site of the laceration. Assuming a foreign body granuloma, he was referred to a maxillofacial surgeon who removed plastic

Intraprosthetic dislocation: a potentially serious complication of dual mobility acetabular cups.

Though dual mobility cups have gained growing popularity as a solution for instability in total hip replacements, these promising devices are subject to a specific implant failure mode, named intraprosthetic dislocation. We present the case of a patient sustaining such an adverse event. The planned revision surgery was postponed 12 months due to a severe heart condition, allowing a rare opportunity to document the natural history of this unusual complication. The small femoral head was found dislodged in the superior part of the metallic shell and had remarkably lost its sphericity. Severe met

Isolated extraocular muscle abscess presenting 40 years after squint surgery.

A 57-year-old man presented with an abscess localised to the lateral rectus region. He was treated as a case of orbital cellulitis because of the presence of soft tissue swelling with a localised abscess discharging through the conjunctiva with associated reduction of visual acuity and restriction of ocular movements laterally. No specific risk factors were identified but an ultrasound scan picked up a hyperechoic signal suggestive of a foreign body within the abscess. Surgical exploration did not identify a foreign body but fibrotic changes between the globe and the lateral rectus muscle were
