[Myositis ossificans traumatica of the palm].

We present a 27-year-old female patient who developed a post-traumatic myositis ossificans with pain and restricted function after trigger finger release of the middle finger. After tumour resection an early recurrence made a re-resection necessary, followed by radiotherapy. Three years postoperatively the patient is free of complaints.

Myositis ossificans traumatica of the medial pterygoid muscle: a case report.

In this report, we present a case of myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) of the medial pterygoid muscle that had developed after mandibular block anesthesia administered for endodontic treatment of the lower right second molar, demonstrating typical features of this condition. MOT should be considered as a differential diagnosis when there is severe limitation of jaw opening and an associated trauma. Panoramic radiographs and axial and coronal computed tomography (CT) scans can effectively delineate the calcified mass. Other imaging studies that may be helpful include magnetic resonance imagi

Myositis ossificans traumatica of the medial pterygoid.

Myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) is a non-neoplastic, heterotopic bone formation within muscle or fascia, presumably due to acute trauma, a burn, surgical manipulation, or repeated injury. A 36-year-old woman presented with progressive limitation of mouth opening over the past 5 months. Computed tomography revealed an irregular ossified mass attached to the medial aspect of the left ramus, extending to the medial and lateral pterygoid plates. MOT of the medial pterygoid is rare, with only four previously reported cases in the English language literature. Surgical excision of the ossificati

Myositis ossificans traumatica of the deltoid ligament in a 34 year old recreational ice hockey player with a 15 year post-trauma follow-up: a case report and review of the literature.

Myositis ossificans traumatica is a relatively common injury associated with sports especially those involving contact. It continues to frustrate both athlete and health practitioner alike due to its continued lack of treatment options and a lengthy natural history. This case study chronicles the observation of a 34 year old recreational ice hockey player who presented 7 years post-trauma, was diagnosed with myositis ossificans traumatica and was followed up on 8 years later (15 years post-trauma). This case report is suspected to be the first published case study of its kind. The literature r

[Sciatic xeuropathy secondary to compression by a heterotopic ossification due to myositis ossificans traumatica. (Case report and review of the literature)].

We describe a case of sciatic nerve entrapment neuropathy due to a posttraumatic heterotopic ossification (myositis ossificans traumatica). A 52 y.o. man was examined complaining from right lower limb pain and weakness progressing for one year after a blunt trauma and a hematoma of the hip. Clinical examination demonstrated sciatic nerve palsy with pain and paresthesia felt distal to the lesion. Electrodiagnostic studies show severe denervation changes in the tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum brevis and gastrocnemius muscles. Both radiography and CT scan revealed new bone formation in the

Traumatic myositis ossificans as a result of college fraternity hazing.

We present a case of a 20-year-old college student who had myositis ossificans traumatica develop after a fraternity hazing. The patient was struck repeatedly on both of his thighs while standing at attention, and he presented with bilateral thigh pain and stiffness 6 weeks after the incident. Physical examination revealed 130 degrees flexion of his right knee and 50 degrees flexion of his left knee, which had a firm end point. Radiographs showed extensive new bone located adjacent to the anterior and lateral aspects of his left femur with less involvement of his right thigh. Magnetic resonanc

Adult autopsy case with marked myositis ossificans: association with repetitive physical assault and battery.

A man in his thirties was found dead in his room. The autopsy findings were as follows: multiple bruises and subdermal edema, small sized stab wounds, a number of skin scars, new and old rib fractures, mild liver contusion, and marked myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) at both thighs. In particular, the MOT was closely associated with repetitive physical assault and battery. The deceased did not have any lethal injuries of internal organs or great vessels, and the cause of death was diagnosed as traumatic hypovolemic shock. The deceased seemed to have accepted as fate his "specific situation

Subcutaneous injections as a risk factor of myositis ossificans traumatica in spinal cord injury.

Myositis ossificans traumatica is a pathological condition characterized by extraskeletal bone formation, induced by major or repeated minor trauma to the muscles. Our objective is to report an unusual case of myositis ossificans traumatica in a paraplegic patient. Bilateral swelling and erythema on the thighs of a 1-month paraplegic inpatient was diagnosed as myositis ossificans traumatica in the quadriceps muscles due to low-molecular-weight heparin injections for deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis. As a result, repeated injections under the spinal cord injury level should be avoided when poss

Pitx2 prevents osteoblastic transdifferentiation of myoblasts by bone morphogenetic proteins.

Muscle cells are often exposed to bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) in pathological muscle and/or bone conditions. Because BMPs function as strong bone inducers as well as myogenesis inhibitors, certain molecules likely prevent muscle cells from converting into pathologic bone; without these molecules, de novo bone would form as observed in myositis ossificans traumatica. When C2C12 myoblasts are exposed to BMPs, they differentiate into osteoblastic cells but cannot mature into bone cells. As the Osterix gene, a transcription factor for osteoblast differentiation, is only transiently induced

Post-traumatic severe trismus caused by impairment of the masticatory muscle.

Restriction of the mouth opening from a pathologic condition outside the temporomandibular joint is called a pseudo- or extra-articular ankylosis. The authors report two cases of severe post-traumatic pseudoankylosis. One case showed fibrous degeneration of the bilateral masseter muscles without a facial bone fracture, which caused severe trismus, a mouth opening of less than 2 mm, and gradually appeared after blunt injuries to the face. The other was a rare case accompanied with the bone formation in the masseter muscle and was diagnosed as myositis ossificans traumatica, which also presented

Myositis ossificans traumatica of the thenar region.

Myositis ossificans of the hand is extremely rare. We report an unusual case of myositis ossificans of the thenar muscles and discuss the diagnostic pitfalls whereby this condition can be mistaken for malignancy or infection.

Muscle contusion injury and myositis ossificans traumatica.

In athletic competition, muscle contusion injury is a frequent and debilitating condition. Found in traditional contact and noncontact sports, contusions also can occur to the nonathlete by simple falls and accidents. The injury consists of a well-defined sequence of events involving microscopic rupture and damage to muscle cells, macroscopic defects in muscle bellies, infiltrative bleeding, and inflammation. The repair of the tissue can be thought of as a race between remodeling and scar formation. In the current study, the authors describe the relevant body of research directed at delineatin
