Fractured heterotopic bone in myositis ossificans traumatica.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the case of a patient with an acute fracture occurring through preexisting, quiescent, posttraumatic heterotopic bone formation of the gastrocnemius muscle. The lesion demonstrated a previously unreported pattern of healing. This case serves to demonstrate an infrequent event with a rare and heretofore unreported sequella. CLINICAL FEATURES: A 54-year-old man with preexisting, mature heterotopic bone within the left gastrocnemius muscle experienced reinjury to the site. The preexisting heterotopic bone was a result of a sporting injury that had occurred 32 years previous

Myositis ossificans traumatica of the temporal muscle: a case report.

Myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) is a pathological condition characterized by extraskeletal formation of bony tissue, induced by violent or repeated trauma. Reports of this pathology occurring in the region of the head and neck are rare, and even more so in the muscles of mastication. We present the case of patient with MOT of the temporal muscle, the etiology of which seems to be related to traumatic manipulations during dental treatment. A review of the literature is presented and the surgical approach, which resolved this case is discussed.

Myositis ossificans traumatica in young children: report of three cases and review of the literature.

Myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) is a rare musculoskeletal disorder in young children. Clinical and imaging presentation in the early stage of disease makes it difficult to differentiate between infection and musculoskeletal neoplasms, particularly in the absence of a history of trauma. Three cases of MOT in children under the age of 10 years, two with inferential trauma, are presented and the findings on different imaging modalities are discussed with reference to the existing literature. While findings based on a single imaging technique, including MRI, may be rather non-specific and eve

Cervical myositis ossificans traumatica: a rare location.

An unusual case of myositis ossificans traumatica lesion located in the paraspinal region is reported. Despite the contiguity of the lesion with the cervical vertebrae and ominous appearance of the biopsy material, the history of antecedent trauma and computed tomography findings allowed preoperative accurate diagnosis. To our knowledge, myositis ossificans traumatica located in the cervical paraspinal region is very rare.

Differential expression of bone and cartilage related genes in fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, myositis ossificans traumatica, and osteogenic sarcoma.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, myositis ossificans traumatica, and osteogenic sarcoma are representative genetic, traumatic, and neoplastic disorders of osteogenesis, respectively. However, the pathology, pathophysiology, and natural history of the disorders differ substantially. Gene expression related to bone induction was studied in these disorders. Primary cell lines established from lesional tissues derived from each of these disorders expressed different patterns of protooncogenes, bone morphogenetic protein genes, and bone phenotype specific genes. The osteogenic sarcoma cell li

Myositis ossificans traumatica of the masseter muscle: review of the literature and report of two additional cases.

Myositis ossificans traumatica of the masseter muscle is uncommon. The condition is benign and results in reactive heterotopic bone formation, usually producing limitation of opening of the jaws. Radiographic and microscopic examination can confirm the diagnosis. Treatment of myositis ossificans traumatica of the masseter muscle is surgical, with other modalities used when occurring in other muscles of the body.

Heterotopic ossification of midline abdominal incisions: CT and MR imaging findings.

OBJECTIVE: Heterotopic ossification of a midline surgical incision in a form of myositis ossificans traumatica in which osseous, cartilaginous, and, occasionally, myelogenous elements develop within an abdominal wound. When large amounts of internal ossification are present, the scar may demonstrate a complex radiologic appearance and potentially may be misinterpreted as a retained foreign body or incisional neoplastic recurrence. This report describes the CT and MR imaging findings of this entity. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed the cross-sectional imaging findings

Myositis ossificans traumatica of sternocleidomastoid muscle presenting as cervical lymph-node metastasis.

It is well known that clinical assessment of the metastatic status of the cervical lymph nodes in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract is frequently inaccurate, and several causes for false-positive assessments are well described. We report a novel cause, namely, a case of myositis ossificans traumatica of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, which presented as a neck mass after a direct laryngoscopy for biopsy of a laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. The importance of this lesion is that it should be considered in the clinical differential diagnosis of swellings in

[Traumatic myositis ossificans. Posttraumatic non-neoplastic heterotopic ossification].

Myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) is a nonneoplastic, heterotopic ossification of soft tissues i.e. skeletal muscle, tendons, aponeuroses and fascia. It is often encountered in young male athletes participating in contact sports as a result of a single or repeated contusion. MOT tends to be solitary, localized and well circumscribed with a self-limited growth potential that may culminate in regression. The pathogenesis of MOT is still enigmatic. Recent animal experiments have led to a theory that mesenchymal connective tissue cells, undergo metaplasia induced by trauma and probably osteogen

Neurogenic heterotopic ossification.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) following neurological injury is defined as soft tissue bone formation which is most often seen after spinal cord or head injury and reported to occur after numerous other neurological insults. It can result in ankylosis of associated joints restricting patient mobility. Lesions present with signs of local inflammation. Evidence of ossification is noted on Technetium 99 bone scan and then on X-ray. Serum alkaline phosphatase may be elevated. Although it resembles the histopathology of myositis ossificans traumatica, its pathogenesis remains unclear. Current resear

Myositis ossificans traumatica.

OBJECTIVE: To present a case of myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) in a hockey player. Serial X-ray studies allow the reader an opportunity to observe MOT in its earliest through fulminated stages. CLINICAL FEATURES: A 20-yr-old hockey player was subjected to an acute blow to the lateral thigh. Copious amounts of swelling soon developed. The patient was unable to skate. X-rays were initially performed 4 hr after the injury and demonstrated a hugh mass developing in the thigh at that time. INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: The player was inappropriately treated with deep tissue massage and heat at

Thigh injuries in athletes.

The thigh, which consists of the heavily muscled region around the femur, is vulnerable to many types of athletic injury. This review addresses the assessment, prevention, and rehabilitation of both the common thigh injuries associated with participation in sports, such as contusions and myositis ossificans traumatica, and a few relatively uncommon but diagnostically important entities that sports physicians must recognize when an athlete has pain or dysfunction attributable to the thigh. Dividing the thigh into anatomic compartments aids in both differential diagnosis and understanding of the

The management of athletes with myositis ossificans traumatica.

Myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) is often encountered by young male athletes participating in contact sports. The purpose of this paper is to review this disorder, characterized by a localized bone formation within muscle and other connective tissues as a result of a single or repeated contusion. MOT merits close attention because it may cause protracted disability and absence from competitive and recreational activities. Moreover, it may be mistaken for serious pathologies such as sarcoma. Confusion regarding the optimal management of MOT may also arise because the literature proposes con

Myositis ossificans of the upper extremity: a long-term follow-up.

The long-term results of nonoperative treatment of myositis ossificans traumatica have been infrequently reported. We reviewed 83 cases of myositis ossificans seen at the Mayo Clinic from 1950 to 1979 in patients up to 21 years of age. The upper extremity was involved in 31 patients. Follow-up averaged 13 years for 23 of the (74%) patients studied. Football injuries had occurred in 20 of these patients, and the diagnosis was made an average of 3.3 weeks from the time of the initial injury. Observation was the only treatment in 18 of the 31 cases. At follow-up two-thirds of the patients with up
