MYOSITIS OSSIFICANS PROGRESSIVA: CASE REPORT.

Myositis ossificans progressiva is a rare autosomal dominant disease with less than 1,000 case reports. Such patients present edema, caused by inflammatory processes that progressively calcify, and with loss of mobility in the region affected. The objective of this study was to describe a case of myositis ossificans progressiva, present its clinical manifestations and discuss the treatments available (oral ascorbic acid and intravenous bisphosphonate).

Myositis ossificans on the forearm in a 10-year-old girl.

Myositis ossificans is a rarely encountered benign lesion characterized by a non-neoplastic heterotopic bone formation in both soft tissue and skeletal muscle. Three subgroups of myositis ossificans are identified: myositis ossificans progressiva, which is hereditary; nontraumatic or pseudomalignant myositis ossificans, which is developed in the absence of any trauma; and myositis ossificans circumscripta, which is related to evident and direct trauma. In this case report, we present a girl with a swelling on the forearm who was finally diagnosed with nontraumatic myositis ossificans.

Clinical and Genetic Analysis of Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by congenital malformation of the great toes and disabling heterotopic ossification in specific anatomic locations with a world wide prevalence of 1 in 2 million population. Nearly 90% of patients with FOP are misdiagnosed and mismanaged. We present a case of a four-year-old boy brought by his parents with the complaints of stiffness of right shoulder, neck and multiple swellings over the upper back noted over the past 4 months. On examination bilateral symmetrical hallux valgus with microdactyly of great toes

Munchmeyer's disease-a rare case report and review of literature.

Munchmeyer's disease is a rare variety of myositis ossificans. It is a significant clinical entity, diagnosing and understanding its pathophysiology can save a patient from spurious medical workups and anxiety of a suspected neoplasm. The number of authentic cases of this disease in the literature is small. The purpose of this article is to present a case of Munchmeyer's disease and review the literature for the same to date. The rare incidence, obscure aetiology, unknown definitive treatment plan and poor prognosis make this condition an enigma.

UNLABELLED: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva formerly known as Myositis ossificans progressiva is a rare hereditary mesodermal disorder. It is characterized by congenital skeletal anomalies and progressive ectopic bone formation in connective tissue, resulting in mature ossification within soft tissues and bridging between osseous structures. It is extremely rare and has an incidence of one in two million people. Usually, it has typical clinical and radiographic features. Here, we present a case of a young patient diagnosed to have an advanced fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva. Plain

Myositis ossificans in medial, lateral pterygoid, and contralateral temporalis muscles: a rare case report.

Myositis ossificans is ossification and bone formation within muscle. It is a rare and unusual pathologic entity that has defied most efforts to establish definite etiology, pathogenesis, and satisfactory treatment. Myositis ossificans is mainly of 2 types: myositis ossificans progressiva (MOP) and myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT). Myositis ossificans idiopathic is also reported in the literature. When it affects the muscles of mastication, it causes severe trismus. Computed tomography scans and magnetic resonance imaging can effectively delineate the calcified mass. In this article, we pr

Heterotopic ossification revisited.

Heterotopic ossification is the abnormal formation of mature lamellar bone within extraskeletal soft tissues where bone does not exist. Heterotopic ossification has been classified into posttraumatic, nontraumatic or neurogenic, and myositis ossificans progressiva or fibrodysplasia ossificans progressive. The pathophysiology is unknown. Anatomically, heterotopic ossification occurs outside the joint capsule without disrupting it. The new bone can be contiguous with the skeleton but generally does not involve the periosteum. Three-phase technetium-99m (99mTc) methylene diphosphonate bone scan i

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva: diagnosis and surgical management.

Fibrodysplasia (or Myositis) Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) is a rare genetic disease with variable expression, characterized by the association of congenital anomalies of the toes and fingers and progressive appearance of ectopic bone within the skeletal muscles, often following a trauma or an infection. FOP initially affects the nape and thoracic paravertebral muscles. With age, there is a progression of ossifications to other muscular groups following a proximodistal and cranio-caudal extension. Patients develop a restrictive respiratory insufficiency with atelectasis. The diagnosis of FOP is

The imaging of myositis ossificans.

Myositis ossificans (MO) is characterized by abnormal heterotopic bone formation involving striated muscle, tendons, ligaments, fasciae, and aponeuroses. Myocardium, the diaphragm, tongue, larynx, smooth muscle, and sphincters are all spared. Several subtypes of myositis ossificans exist: posttraumatic myositis ossificans (PTMO), nontraumatic/pseudomalignant myositis ossificans, and myositis ossificans progressiva (MOP). This article reviews the clinical features and differential diagnoses of each subtype of MO and illustrates the typical imaging features demonstrated by plain radiography, ult

An unusual case of rapidly progressive contractures: Case report and brief review.

An 8-year-old boy, diagnosed as cervical dystonia, was referred to our tertiary center. After a trivial trauma he had developed painful lumps in the axial region, which was followed by restricted movements of neck, shoulder, and abdominal muscles over 4 months. He had kyphoscoliosis, torticollis, rigid abdomen, and multiple muscle contractures. He also had short great toes. A detailed skeletal survey showed calcification in the soft tissues surrounding the shoulder anterior chest wall, thorax, and paraspinal muscles; there was also beaking of vertebrae, which was confirmed by CT thorax. This r

Historical perspectives on the clinical development of bisphosphonates in the treatment of bone diseases.

Bisphosphonates (formerly termed diphosphonates) were first synthesized in the late 1800s; however, their clinical use has been relatively recent. The bisphosphonates' affinity for hydroxyapatite crystal surface led Procter and Gamble to test these compounds in dental, then medical applications. With key input from university researchers, this led to the medical use of the first bisphosphonate, etidronate disodium in 1968 to treat a young patient with myositis ossificans progressiva. Further clinical research led to widespread medical application for the bisphosphonate class including use as a

Diagnostic features of fibrodysplasia (myositis) ossificans progressiva on bone scan.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare, autosomal dominant disorder of connective tissue that leads to progressive, disabling heterotopic ossification in characteristic anatomic patterns. It is accompanied by pathognomonic congenital malformation of the great toes (or thumbs) - microdactyly. There is a high occurrence of diagnostic errors in FOP, leading to inappropriate interventions that may result in significant harm to patients. Scintigraphic demonstration of heterotopic ossifications in connective tissue at characteristic locations, in combination with pathognomonic microda

Pre- and post-therapy MR imaging in fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, also known as myositis ossificans progressiva, is characterized by congenital skeletal malformations and progressive ectopic bone formation in connective tissues. The disorder presents as rapidly growing masses usually in the neck or paraspinal region with stiffness in the adjoining joints. The preosseous lesions involve the fascia, ligaments, tendons, and skeletal muscle. These lesions occasionally resolve but more often progress to form ectopic ossification. We present a boy who had a characteristic clinical presentation. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging
