Outcomes of critically ill patients with newly diagnosed Burkitt's lymphoma: a monocentric retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) can lead to intensive care unit (ICU) admission at diagnosis and treatment initiation for management of disease-related complications such as tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) and acute kidney injury (AKI). Data on the outcomes and prognostic factors in this population of critically ill patients remain limited. We conducted a retrospective single-center study including 124 patients admitted to the ICU of Saint-Louis Hospital with newly diagnosed BL between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2023. Univariate and multivariate survival analyses were performed to determi

Diagnostic and health system constraints in pediatric hematologic malignancies in East Africa and implications for WHO classification reconsidering in limited resource settings.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Pediatric hematologic malignancies, particularly leukemia and lymphoma, represent a major and growing contributor to childhood cancer mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In sub-Saharan Africa, more than 100,000 children develop cancer annually, with survival rates estimated at 20-30%, compared with over 80% in high-income countries, largely due to delayed diagnosis and limited access to specialized care. This narrative and conceptual review, informed by prior empirical work conducted in Kenya and Uganda, examines challenges in implementing World Health

Clinical characteristics and mortality risk factors among 400,509 individuals diagnosed with AIDS in Brazil: A nationwide observational study.

OBJECTIVES: AIDS remains a major global public-health challenge, with persistent care-cascade gaps driving preventable deaths, especially in LMICs. In Brazil, uneven progress and late presentation reflect social and regional inequities. We used the national notifiable diseases system (SINAN) to profile AIDS at diagnosis and identify mortality risk factors. STUDY DESIGN: National retrospective cohort study using the SINAN from 2007 to 2022. METHODS: We included all SINAN records of AIDS diagnoses in Brazil between 2007 and 2022. Extracted variables comprised demographics (age, sex, education,

Patterns of incident Burkitt lymphoma during the HIV epidemic among the Black African and White population in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Burkitt lymphoma (BL) may be HIV-associated but data on BL trends in South Africa (SA), where HIV is highly prevalent, are scarce. We compared BL incidence trends over 36 years among Black African and White individuals. METHODS: We included histologically diagnosed BL from the National Cancer Registry in SA between 1986-2021. We computed yearly age-standardised incidence rates (ASIR) by race, and annual percentage changes in ASIR using Joinpoint regression. RESULTS: Between 1986-2021, 2205 Black African (ASIR: 1.68/1,000,000; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.63-1.73) and 366 White

Survival analysis in adult Burkitt Lymphoma in Colombia according to HIV status.

INTRODUCTION: Burkitt lymphoma is a highly aggressive Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, is considered a rare tumor, accounts for only 1-2 % of adult lymphomas in North America. The two-year Overall survival rates was reported between 67 % and 84 %. Statistics from developing countries comes mainly from children studies in Africa where Burkitt Lymphoma is endemic. In Latin American countries, information about survival in adult population is scarce with limited number of patients and poor survival outcomes mainly in HIV associated Burkitt Lymphoma. The aim of this study is to evaluate survival in adults' p

TCF3 and ID3 Regulate TSPAN32 Expression in Burkitt Lymphoma.

Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is an aggressive non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma characterised by chromosomal translocations involving the MYC gene, leading to its overexpression and driving uncontrolled proliferation. BL is categorised into endemic, sporadic, and immunodeficiency-associated subtypes, each with distinct clinical and epidemiological features. TSPAN32, a member of the tetraspanin family, plays a key role in B cell development and immune regulation. In this study, we investigated the regulation of TSPAN32 expression in BL subtypes. Our results show that TSPAN32 expression is significantly down

When the mouth speaks first: oral Burkitt lymphoma unmasks HIV in a young male.

Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is an aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma frequently associated with immunodeficiency states such as HIV infection. This case report describes a 27-year-old male from the Brazilian Amazon who presented with multiple ulcerated gingival swellings, leading to a diagnosis of BL based on histopathological and immunohistochemical findings. The tumor showed a diffuse proliferation of monomorphic medium-sized lymphoid cells with a characteristic starry-sky pattern and immunoreactivity for LCA, CD20, PAX-5, BCL-6, CD10, and MYC, with a Ki-67 index >95 %. Subsequent serological

Risk of lymphoma among people with HIV in the United States, 2001-2019.

BACKGROUND: Lymphomas are among the most common malignancies in people with HIV. Although the widespread use of combination antiretroviral therapy has substantially reduced the risk of lymphoma among people with HIV, data on specific lymphoma subtypes remain limited and outdated. METHODS: Using data from the HIV/AIDS Cancer Match Study, a US cohort linking cancer and HIV registries and including 822 702 people with HIV, we assessed the relative risks of 14 lymphoma subtypes by calendar period and age group between 2001 and 2019. We estimated the risk of lymphoma subtypes using standardized in

A narrative review on the lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia in burkitt lymphoma: navigating metabolic changes.

BACKGROUND: Burkitt lymphoma is a highly aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma closely associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and driven by MYC oncogene overexpression. It presents in three clinical forms: endemic, sporadic, and immunodeficiency-associated. Endemic Burkitt lymphoma, prevalent in Africa, typically involves jaw tumors; sporadic cases commonly present with abdominal masses; and immunodeficiency-associated cases occur in patients with HIV or other forms of immune compromise. A major clinical challenge is the development of severe metabolic complications, including lac

Characterization of the genomic landscape of HIV-associated lymphoma reveals heterogeneity across histological subtypes.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with HIV experience an increased risk of lymphoma, making this an important cause of death among people with HIV. Nevertheless, little is known regarding the underlying genetic aberrations, which we therefore set out to characterize. DESIGN: We conducted next-generation panel sequencing to explore the mutational status of diagnostic lymphoma biopsies from 18 patients diagnosed with lymphoma secondary to HIV infection. METHODS: Ion Torrent next-generation sequencing was performed with an AmpliSeq panel on diagnostic lymphoma biopsies from HIV-associated B-cell lymphomas

Marrow talaromycosis as the initial presentation in a case of Burkitt lymphoma.

Talaromyces marneffei is a thermally dimorphic fungus which causes opportunistic infections in immunocompromised individuals. The diagnosis of T. marneffei infection rests on the microscopic demonstration of the fungus in the tissues and/or isolation of the fungus from clinical specimens. In this report, we discuss a case involving a 23-year-old man who presented with a history of intermittent fever, cough and constitutional symptoms. Clinically, the patient exhibited pallor, jaundice, generalized seborrhoeic dermatitis, hepatomegaly, and small palpable cervical lymph nodes. A computed tomogra

Feasibility and outcomes after dose reduction of immunochemotherapy in young adults with Burkitt lymphoma and leukemia: results of the BURKIMAB14 trial.

High dose-intensive or infusional intermediate-dose immunochemotherapy is highly effective treatment for Burkitt lymphoma irrespective of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. However, toxicities of these regimens are relevant, especially in older adults and elderly patients. The prospective multicenter BURKIMAB14 trial included four to six blocks of immunochemotherapy according to stage (localized: 1 and 2 non-bulky; advanced: 2 bulky, 3, 4) and age, with dose reduction in patients >55 years old. Dose-intensity of chemotherapy was reduced in patients ≤55 years old after achieving comp
