INTRODUCTION: The bone marrow biopsy (BMB) is a diagnostic and staging tool in lymphoma that remains practically useful and relevant in resource-constrained settings, despite restricted applications in international staging guidelines, which favour less invasive nuclear medicine techniques.
METHODS: Retrospective laboratory data review of BMBs in adult lymphoma patients from 2005 to 2010 to determine subtypes, rates of bone marrow involvement (BMI), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seroprevalence and CD4 counts, trephine length and additional findings.
RESULTS: A total of 1215 BMBs reporte

INTRODUCTION: Primary NHL (non-Hodgkin lymphoma) of the colon represents only 0.2% to 1.2% of all colonic malignancies. Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) is usually a disease reported in children and young people, most of them associated with EBV or HIV infection. We describe a rare case of intestinal obstruction due to sporadic Burkitt's lymphoma causing ileocaecal invagination explaining our experience Methods. A 31-year-old man presented with diffuse colic pain and weight loss. Clinical examination revealed an abdominal distension with pain in the right iliac fossa. Colonoscopy documented a caecal la

Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is a highly aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma characterized by marked tumor proliferation resulting from translocation of the MYC oncogene. Distinct clinical variants include endemic, sporadic, and immunodeficiency-associated cases. All variants are characterized by rapidly dividing tumor masses that quickly disseminate to extranodal sites, including the bone marrow and central nervous system (CNS). Although common in children, BL is rare in adults, mandating a high index of clinical suspicion for timely diagnosis. Prompt recognition and initiation of comprehensive s

Purpose Cancer surveillance provides a critical evidence base to guide cancer control efforts, yet population-based coverage in Africa is sparse. Hospital-based registries may help fill this need by providing local epidemiologic data to guide policy and forecast local health care needs. We report the epidemiology of patients with cancer recorded by a de novo hospital-based cancer registry at Kamuzu Central Hospital, Malawi, the sole provider of comprehensive oncology services for half the country and location of a high-volume pathology laboratory. Methods We conducted active case finding acros

OBJECTIVES: Non-Hodgkin lymphoma occurs with increasing frequency in HIV/AIDS. As South Africa has the highest incidence of HIV/AIDS worldwide, an epidemiologic study of this nature provides insight into head and neck lymphomas in a defined South African population. This retrospective review evaluated frequency and clinico-pathologic characteristics of patients diagnosed with head and neck lymphoma at the Oral Pathology Department, University of Witwatersrand between 1993 and 2012.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Histopathology reports of patients with head and neck lymphomas (n=504) were reviewed. De

Burkitt lymphoma is an aggressive B cell malignancy accounting for 1-2% of all adult lymphomas. Treatment with dose-intensive, multi-agent chemotherapy is effective but associated with considerable toxicity. In this observational study, we compared real-world efficacy, toxicity, and costs of four frequently employed treatment strategies for Burkitt lymphoma: the Lymphome Malins B (LMB), the Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster (BFM), the HOVON, and the CODOX-M/IVAC regimens. We collected data from 147 adult patients treated in eight referral centers. Following central pathology assessment, 105 of these ca

Association between HIV/AIDS and some of the cancers such as lymphomais is well known. Relative risk for developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) increases 60-200 folds in HIV-infected individuals. Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL), primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) and Plasmablastic Lymphoma (PBL) are among the most frequent subtypes. During the last century, scientists found that the immune system could potentially detect and destroy cancer cells. Therefore, they started a new field of study, which is named immunotherapy. There are different immunotherapeutic methods,

BACKGROUND: Short intensive chemotherapy is the standard of care for adult patients with Burkitt's leukaemia or lymphoma. Findings from single-arm studies suggest that addition of rituximab to these regimens could improve patient outcomes. Our objective was to test this possibility in a randomised trial.
METHODS: In this randomised, controlled, open-label, phase 3 trial, we recruited patients older than 18 years with untreated HIV-negative Burkitt's lymphoma (including Burkitt's leukaemia) from 45 haematological centres in France. Exclusion criteria were contraindications to any drug included

BACKGROUND: The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic has strongly influenced non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) incidence in the U.S. general population, but its effects on NHL mortality trends are unknown.
METHODS: Using SEER cancer registry data, we assessed NHL mortality rates in the United States (2005-2012) and mapped NHL deaths to prior incident cases. Data included HIV status at NHL diagnosis. We describe the proportion of NHL deaths linked to an HIV-infected case, for 3 AIDS-defining subtypes [diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), Burkitt lymphoma, and central nervous system (CNS) lym

Background: Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has extended the life expectancy of patients with HIV/AIDS to approach that of the general population. However, it remains unclear whether HIV infection affects the survival of patients with lymphoma in the HAART era. Methods: Patients diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), Burkitt lymphoma, peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL), or follicular lymphoma during 2004-2011 were identified from the National Cancer Database. Survival analyses were conducted, where each HIV-infected patient was propensity score match

About one-half of all Burkitt lymphoma (BL) patients are younger than 40 years, and one-third belong to the adolescent and young adult (AYA) subset, defined by an age between 15 and 25-40 years, based on selection criteria used in different reports. BL is an aggressive B-cell neoplasm displaying highly characteristic clinico-diagnostic features, the biologic hallmark of which is a translocation involving immunoglobulin and c-MYC genes. It presents as sporadic, endemic, or epidemic disease. Endemicity is pathogenetically linked to an imbalance of the immune system which occurs in African childr

PURPOSE: Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) is a common HIV-associated lymphoma in South Africa. B-cell lymphoma unclassifiable with features intermediate between diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and Burkitt's lymphoma (BL/DLBCL) also occurs in HIV infection. Outcomes of HIV-infected patients with BL or BL/DLBCL in a resource-constrained setting are not defined.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of HIV-positive patients with BL or BL/DLBCL treated from 2004 to 2012 with curative intent at a publically funded academic medical center in South Africa. Differences between BL and BL/DLBCL, survival ou

Long-term evolution of HIV because of noncompliance and nonadherence to antiretroviral therapy favors the occurrence of difficult to treat HIV-related malignancies. We present the case of a female patient in “the pediatric cohort” registered at the Iaşi Regional HIV/AIDS Center since year 2000, now with stage C3 AIDS. In 2014, a Burkitt lymphoma was pathologically confirmed, and chemotherapy was initiated as recommended by the hematologist. The clinical course was characterized by multiple complications: hematologic and hepatic toxicities, opportunistic infections and depressive episodes. High

AIMS: To report a case detailing the early histopathogenesis of Burkitt lymphoma (BL), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) positive, in the clinical setting of HIV infection.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We describe a 57 year-old woman with newly diagnosed HIV infection who presented with unilateral localized axillary lymphadenopathy. Histopathological, immunohistochemical, and flow cytometric analyses were performed and showed EBV-positive nests of Burkitt cells, including rare nests also positive for cytomegalovirus, exclusively located within hyperplastic monocytoid B-cell areas of HIV lymphadenitis. Airway mucormycosis is a deadly opportunistic infection that affects immunocompromised persons, particularly diabetics and those undergoing chemotherapy. Although it is typically a pulmonary or sinonasal infection, mucormycosis can affect the larynx and trachea, with devastating results. We report the case of a 46-year-old man with human immunodeficiency virus infection, hepatitis C infection, neurosyphilis, and recently diagnosed Burkitt lymphoma who presented with dysphonia and stridor after receiving one dose of intrathecal chemotherapy. Flexible laryngoscopy detected the presence of fibrin

BACKGROUND: We undertook the present analysis to examine the shifting influence of prognostic factors in HIV-positive patients diagnosed with aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) over the last two decades.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We carried out a pooled analysis from an existing database of patients with AIDS-related lymphoma. Individual patient data had been obtained prior from prospective phase II or III clinical trials carried out between 1990 until 2010 in North America and Europe that studied chemo(immuno)therapy in HIV-positive patients diagnosed with AIDS-related lymphomas. OBJECTIVES: CODOX-M/IVAC (cyclophosphamide, vincristine, doxorubicin-methatrexate/ifusamide, etoposide, cytarabine) chemotherapy is commonly used to treat Burkitt lymphoma and in the HIV-negative population. Rituximab is often added with suggested survival benefits. Concerns over increased toxicity in an already immunocompromized population have prevented its routine addition in people living with HIV (PLWH). This study evaluated the effect on treatment-related toxicity and efficacy of adding rituximab to CODOX-M/IVAC chemotherapy in PLWH.
DESIGN: Retrospective review of 91 PLWH (74 men) with
