Young boars supplemented orally with 800, 500,300 and 100 IU of vitamin D2/kg of feed and control boars not supplemented with vitamin D2 for four months developed mineralization in the left atrial endocardium, lamina muscularis mucosae of the fundic stomach and other sites. Since low levels of supplementation with vitamin D2 did not eliminate the lesions, the levels of vitamin D2 added appeared not to be involved in the pathogenesis. Sixteen patients with chronic renal failure underwent total parathyroidectomy and parathyroid autotransplantation into the muscle of the forearm. Certain clinical and morphologic cardiac observations are described in 18 necropsy patients, aged 33 to 58 years (mean 45 years) (14 women), with chronic hypercalcemia (11.6 to 34.4 mg/dl [19.4]) from one to nine years (mean five years). Primary hyperparathyroidism was present in nine patients and secondary hyperparathyroidism in the other nine (of renal origin in seven). Cardiac valve anular and coronary arterial calcific deposits were present in 10 patients (Group I) including four (mean age 51 years) with considerable narrowing of two or three of the four major epicardial coronary arteries.

Morphologic studies were made of cuspal tears and perforations in 16 porcine valve bioprostheses that had been implanted in 14 patients (9 male and 5 female) ranging in age from 2 to 65 years. Eleven bioprostheses had been in the mitral position for 30 to 123 months, four in the aortic position for 15 to 40 months and one in a varied pulmonary conduit for 96 months. Three cases of myocardial fibre calcification found at post-mortem examination are described. In one case there was antemortem hypercalcaemia and hyperphosphataemia and the case was clearly an example of metastatic calcification. The weights of hearts among 110 octogenarians were studied. At autopsy they ranged from 174 to 785 gm, which is more than the customary norm for adults. In only 15 subjects were the hearts considered completely normal. The progression of cardiac lesions induced in the rat by allylamine administration (0.1% in drinking water) was studied histopathologically and histochemically. Nine patients with polymyositis or dermatomyositis associated with arthritis without antinuclear antibodies have been studied.
