The effects of food consistency on maxillary growth in rats.

The effect of food consistency on the bone appositional pattern at the growth site in the palatal region of the maxillary complex in growing rats was examined by quantitative analysis employing bone histomorphometry. Sixty inbred male rats aged 14 days in the weaning period were divided into two groups. One group was fed a conventional solid diet in addition to milk, while the other received the same diet but in liquid form in addition to milk, They were weaned at 21 days of age. Vital staining was employed to enable a longitudinal recording of bone apposition. In rats fed a liquid diet, the a

Endocardiosis and other heart disease in greyhounds.

Gross and microscopic lesions of heart disease in 230 greyhounds were recorded. The most common lesion was endcardiosis, which occurred in 24 (10.4%) of the greyhounds. Other heart lesions included endocardial fibrosis, myocardial necrosis, ossification of the aortic fibrous ring, and abscesses of the right atrium. Although females weighed less and had lighter hearts, body weights, heart weights and heart:body weight ratios did not differ between greyhounds with or without endocardiosis.

Osteogenic growth peptide regulates proliferation and osteogenic maturation of human and rabbit bone marrow stromal cells.

The recently discovered osteogenic growth peptide (OGP) has been shown to regulate proliferation in fibroblastic and osteoblastic cell lines derived from rats and mice and also alkaline phosphatase activity in the latter was found to be affected. In vivo the OGP enhances bone formation and trabecular bone density. The results of the current study indicate that the OGP is also a potent regulator of marrow stromal cells from man and rabbit, as well as rabbit muscle fibroblasts. The main OGP activity in both marrow systems is a marked stimulation of alkaline phosphatase activity and matrix minera

A necropsy and histomorphometric study of abnormalities in the course of the vertebral artery associated with ossified stylohyoid ligaments.

AIMS: To establish whether abnormalities in the course of the vertebral artery occur and whether they are relevant to arterial injury associated with head and neck movements. METHODS: Twenty vertebral arteries were carefully dissected at necropsy and abnormalities in course were noted, along with any other bony or cartilaginous cervical anomalies. The effect of head and neck movement on these vessels was studied before a detailed histomorphometric examination was undertaken on sections of the excised arteries. RESULTS: Five vessels had an abnormal course. One vessel entered the transverse fo

Human demineralized freeze-dried bone: inadequate induced bone formation in athymic mice. A preliminary report.

The purpose of this study was to test the osteoinductive properties of demineralized freeze-dried bone (DFDBA) randomly purchased from four commercial bone banks. Twenty-five (25) milligrams of bone from each of the banks was implanted into the hindquarter muscles of athymic mice. Two samples from each of the banks were compared with samples from the other banks. A total of 16 implants were grafted into 8 mice. Two additional mice served as controls. One mouse received an implantation of deactived human cortical bone matrix (DBM) (negative control). The other mouse received an implant of human

Thallium-201 accumulation in myositis ossificans and in juxta-articular ossification.

We present the findings on 201Tl and 99mTc-MDP scintigraphy in three patients suffering from heterotopic ossification (two patients presenting with myositis ossificans and one patient presenting with juxta-articular ossification in combination with myositis ossificans). Since resection of the lesions has to be delayed until stabilization, 99mTc-MDP is often used as a parameter of lesional activity, although it is not optimal. For this clinical problem, we evaluated 201Tl scintigraphy as a marker of metabolic activity. In addition to the well-documented uptake of 99mTc-MDP, marked accumulation

Origins and functions of cells essential for periodontal repair: the role of fibroblasts in tissue homeostasis.

OBJECTIVE: A review is undertaken of rodent model systems and cell culture studies that address the role of periodontal fibroblasts in tissue homeostasis in both normal function and after wound healing. RATIONALE: Fibroblasts are the predominant cells of the periodontal ligament (PL) and of healthy gingiva and have important roles in the development, function and regeneration of the tooth support apparatus. REVIEW: In normally functioning periodontal tissues cell turnover involves generation of new cells by proliferation which in turn is balanced by apoptopic cell death. Consequently PL fibr

[Electrophysiological and MRI study on poor outcome after surgery for cervical myelopathy].

Occasionally, the outcome from laminoplasty for cervical spondylosis is disappointing despite an adequate operation. Before surgery, it is difficult to diagnose the pathological extent of the involvement of the spinal cord. The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and of the motor evoked potentials (MEPs) for the indication of the surgery and prognosis. Retrospectively, we investigated the MEPs and the MRI image of 31 patients in surgery for cervical myelopathy, involving 21 cases with cervical spondylosis and 10 cases with ossification of the

[Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder].

Degenerative ossification is formed directly at the major tubercle. Like in any other gliding tendon, fibrocartilage cells lie on the articular side of the rotator tendon at the pivot of the humerus head. Typically, the calcific deposits of calcifying tendinitis are found between these two areas. At this site, hydroxyapatite is usually formed by fibrocartilage cells through an unknown stimulus. There is no ossification. This is a two-phase disease. During the chronic initial phase, a calcific deposit is formed in the tendon of the rotator cuff. In the X-ray, it is clearly circumscribed and has

[Myositis ossificans progressiva].

BACKGROUND: Myositis ossificans progressiva is a rare progressive disease of connective tissue with a poor prognosis. CASE REPORT: A 16 year-old girl suffered from lameness of her right leg associated with inguinal swelling. Progressive aggravation of pain with extension of swelling to the posterior part of her thigh required an X-ray examination which showed hip dysplasia and calcifications around the hip. Angiography was normal; a diagnosis of hematoma was suggested by scannography and bone scintigraphy, but biopsy showed features of nodular fasciitis. The association of progressive ectopic

Activity and solubility of bone morphogenetic protein derived from porcine bone matrix.

Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) was extracted from porcine bone matrix and purified by liquid chromatography. The final purified fraction was shown to be homogeneous by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The molecular weight of porcine bone matrix-derived BMP was estimated to be about 20 kDa by SDS-PAGE. The final purified BMP was highly soluble in vivo, so that it dispersed immediately after implantation and exerted no effect on bone induction. The other crude active fractions obtained in the process of purification induced new bone in three weeks when

Histopathologic changes in the aging human cricoarytenoid joint.

Detrimental effects of the natural aging process on the human cricoarytenoid joint have been hypothesized as a possible etiology for the voice changes seen in the aging population. Cellular events occurring at the histologic level, such as cricoarytenoid joint erosion or arthritis may lead to alterations in laryngeal structure which ultimately affect its function and performance. Seven normal human larynges of varying ages ranging from 29 to 69 years of age were examined histopathologically for changes in the cricoarytenoid joint. The synovium, joint space, periarticular muscle, and respirator

Methylprednisolone has a preventive effect on heterotopic bone formation and on knee thickening and stiffening following manipulation of immobilized rabbit legs.

The effect of methylprednisolone administered following manipulation of the immobilized knee of 35 adult rabbits was investigated. In the legs of 15 control rabbits which received no methylprednisolone, heterotopic cartilage and bone in the periarticular tissues and in the vastus intermedius muscle, and extensive knee stiffening and thickening regularly developed. In the other rabbits, methylprednisolone showed a marked preventive effect on the development of all these pathological signs.

Equine demineralized bone matrix: relationship between particle size and osteoinduction.

The osteoinductive capability of four particle sizes of equine demineralized bone matrix (DBM) was evaluated. Matrix particles were implanted in brachiocephalicus muscle pouches in six horses and were harvested 8 weeks later. Matrix particle sizes of 2.0 mm3 to 4.0 mm3 and 5.0 mm3 to 10.0 mm3 were associated with osteoinductive activity and minimal signs of local inflammation. The two smaller particle sizes (0.425 mm3 to 0.850 mm3 and 0.850 mm3 to 2.0 mm3) were minimally osteoinductive and were associated with a greater local inflammatory response. Microscopic events associated with new bone p

Closure of multiple pressure sores with split total thigh flap.

Pressure sores remain a pervasive and recurrent problem in the chronically bedridden and immobilized insensate patient populations, such as those with spinal cord injury. Various musculocutaneous flaps based on muscles of the buttock and thigh are routinely used to close primary, uncomplicated ulcers. The gluteus maximus, tensor fascia lata, and posterior thigh muscles, for example, can be used to close the majority of primary defects. In the case of extensive and recurrent ulceration, however, particularly when the hip joint or proximal femur is infected or marked heterotopic ossification is

Mesenchymal stem cells in bone development, bone repair, and skeletal regeneration therapy.

Bone formation in the embryo, and during adult fracture repair and remodeling, involves the progeny of a small number of cells called mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). These cells continuously replicate themselves, while a portion become committed to mesenchymal cell lineages such as bone, cartilage, tendon, ligament, and muscle. The differentiation of these cells, within each lineage, is a complex multistep pathway involving discrete cellular transitions much like that which occurs during hematopoiesis. Progression from one stage to the next depends on the presence of specific bioactive factors,

Endemic fluorosis of the skeleton: radiographic features in 127 patients.

OBJECTIVE: A wide range of radiographic appearances have been reported in skeletal fluorosis, but little has been written about the spectrum of radiographic features. We evaluated the spectrum of radiographic appearances in this disorder to help with its diagnosis and differentiation from other metabolic skeletal disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred twenty-seven patients with clinically proved endemic fluorosis had radiographs of the chest, spine, pelvis, elbow, forearm, and knee obtained. The radiographic findings were classified as osteosclerosis, osteopenia, intermittent growth li

Whole body irradiation does not affect induction of new bone development.

The effect of whole body irradiation given either beforehand to the donor or after implantation to the recipient rats on the inductive capacity of decalcified bone grafts was studied. In examining the effect of advance whole body irradiation of the donor animal, the grafts were harvested five days after the irradiation, non-irradiated rats serving as control donors. Error! Reference source not found-irradiation with doses of 800, 950 or 1100 rad was used. Heterotopic osteoinduction in a rat membrane-isolated latissimus dorsi island flap. A pilot study.

Applying our knowledge of heterotopic osteoinduction by bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) and demineralized bone matrix (DBM), we sought to induce ossification of membrane-isolated latissimus dorsi flaps in the rat. Our aim was to produce an animal model for a versatile "custom-made" bone island flap which could be used as a substitute for bone. Ten latissimus dorsi island flaps in nine Wistar rats, 5-6 weeks of age, were prepared using microsurgical techniques in aseptic conditions. The flaps were isolated from other tissues with silicone, Gortex or OpSite membranes. We applied 3-9 mg partiall
