In an experimental study in rats hydroxyapatite (HA) ceramics of characteristics and inactive rat bone matrix were investigated comparatively for their suitability as carriers for osteoinductive factors. Bone morphogenetic protein was extracted from long bones of pigs under dissociative conditions and partially purified by gel filtration. Laryngeal reconstruction following vertical partial laryngectomy (VPL) with arytenoidectomy was studied in 30 dogs. Variations of a superiorly based thyroid cartilage flap (TCF) were used for reconstruction. In addition, sternohyoid muscle reconstruction and endolaryngeal muscle coverage were studied. The woodcreepers, a clade of scansorial, neotropical birds, are distinctive among passerines in having extensive tendon ossification. Dissection of 42 of the 50 species indicates that such ossification in the hindlimb is limited almost entirely to tendons of insertion of the crural muscles. Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a potentially disabling complication of spinal injuries and other chronic disorders. It is of unknown aetiology and currently there is no easy or convenient diagnostic method that will allow very early confirmation of the inflammatory changes that precede osteoid and, later, true bone formation. OBJECTIVE: A retrospective review of the MR examinations in 21 patients with idiopathic synovial osteochondromatosis (ISO) was performed to determine its MRI characteristics.

Hereditary Chondrodysplasia or Spider Lamb Syndrome (SLS) is an inherited, semi-lethal, musculo-skeletal disease affecting lambs primarily of Suffolk or Hampshire breeding. Between 1980 and 1990, 24 total thigh flap procedures were performed at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center (Downey, CA) by the Pressure Ulcer Management Service. An unexpected occurrence was identified, that is, the rapid development of heterotopic ossification (HO) occurring in the exposed muscle flap between the first and second stages.
