HIV-associated lymphomas.

Intermediate and high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) with a B-cell phenotype are AIDS-defining illnesses. The incidence of systemic NHL increased greatly and primary central nervous system NHL increased even more in the HIV-infected population. Further increases in frequency are anticipated as HIV-infected individuals survive longer in an immunosuppressed state with improved antiretroviral treatment and treatment of opportunistic infections. Unusual types of NHL and manifestations of Hodgkin's disease are seen in HIV-infected individuals also. The pathologic and clinical features of the H

Oral lesions in a group of Thai people with AIDS.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study were to assess the prevalence of oral lesions present in Thai people with AIDS and to determine whether gender influences the occurrence of oral lesions. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Extra- and intra-oral examinations were performed on 124 AIDS patients (90 men, aged 19-62 years, median 30 years; and 34 women, aged 19-41 years, median 28 years). RESULTS: Oral lesions were found in 102 patients (82%). Pseudomembranous candidiasis was the most common lesions, (n = 67; 54%) followed by erythematous candidiasis (n = 31; 25%), and hairy leukoplakia (n = 16; 13%).

Lymphoid infiltrates of the salivary glands: pathology, biology and clinical significance.

Lymphoid infiltrates of the salivary glands are common to a variety of pathologic conditions including autoimmune disorders, malignant lymphomas, and immunoregulatory responses to parenchymal neoplasms. Clearly, the correct identification of these salivary gland lymphoid infiltrates has important implications regarding patient prognosis and management. Immunophenotypic and molecular analyses have demonstrated that many lesions formerly regarded as myoepithelial sialadentis or benign lymphoepithelial lesion in fact represent neoplastic lymphoid proliferations with the potential for extrasalivar

Induction of apoptosis by protease-defective particle preparations of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 is specific to a subset of U937-derived subclones.

Several recent reports support the hypothesis that apoptosis occurring in leukocytes of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)-infected individuals is important in progression to AIDS. Specifically, apoptosis of uninfected bystander cells appears critical in the pathogenesis of disease. Here, we present evidence that protease-defective, gp120-containing HIV-1 (L-2) particle preparations specifically induce apoptosis in cells obtained from a subset of promonocytic U937-derived subclones. The rate of apoptosis induction was inversely correlated with the susceptibility of the U937 subclones

Distribution of human herpesvirus-8 sequences throughout the spectrum of AIDS-related neoplasia.

OBJECTIVE: AIDS frequently associates with certain malignancies, including Kaposi's sarcoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), and anogenital neoplasia. In this study we aimed to define the frequency of infection by human herpesvirus (HHV)-8 throughout the spectrum of AIDS-related neoplasia in Europe. DESIGN: A tumour panel representative of the distinct types of AIDS-related neoplasms was tested for the presence of HHV-8 DNA sequences. Autologous uninvolved tissues were also tested in selected cases. METHODS: The presence of HHV-8 DNA sequences was assayed by a combination of polymerase chain r

Analysis of the t(2;5)(p23;q35) translocation by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction in CD30+ anaplastic large-cell lymphomas, in other non-Hodgkin's lymphomas of T-cell phenotype, and in Hodgkin's disease.

The t(2;5)(p23;q35) translocation is associated with a high percentage of anaplastic large-cell lymphomas (ALCL) of T- or null-cell phenotype. This translocation was recently cloned and results in the fusion of the nucleophosmin gene (NPM) on chromosome 5q35 to a novel tyrosine kinase-encoding gene designated anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) on chromosome 2p23. Using a sensitive and specific reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay to detect the NPM/ALK fusion transcript, we assessed the involvement of NPM/ALK in a series of histologically and immunohistochemically confir

Epstein-Barr virus in B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas: unexpected infection patterns and different infection incidence in low- and high-grade types.

Two hundred and eight cases of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (B-NHL) occurring in Europeans without any signs of HIV infection were investigated for their association with an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was applied for EBV-DNA detection, in situ hybridization (ISH) for the cellular localization of EBV-encoded small nuclear RNAs (EBER) and immediate-early RNAs (BHLF), and immunohistology (IH) for the detection of EBV-encoded latent membrane protein (LMP) and EBV nuclear antigen 2 (EBNA2) expression. PCR and EBER-ISH produced congruent results in those

Primary central nervous system malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphomas from HIV-infected and non-infected patients: expression of cellular surface proteins and Epstein-Barr viral markers.

The increased incidence of primary central nervous system malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (PCNSL) in HIV- and non-HIV-infected patients and the demonstration of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in these tumours may indicate relationships between PCNSL and EBV. Consequently expression of EBV-induced antigens and cellular markers were studied in 11 HIV-infected and seven non-infected patients by in situ hybridization (ISH) and immunocytochemistry in monoclonal B cell PCNSL. In HIV-infected patients EBV genome was present in 9/11 cases, LMP in 11/11 cases and EBNA2 in 10/11 cases. The expression of adh

[Incidence of lymphoid neoplasms in patients with HIV infection].

BACKGROUND: The incidence, histologic type and clinical characteristics of the lymphoid neoplasms found in patients with HIV infection may be influenced by environmental factors. These characteristics were herewith investigated in the authors medium. METHODS: The medical records of the patients in whom lymphoma was diagnosed were reviewed studying the usual clinical, epidemiological, histological and biological variables. RESULTS: Fourteen patients: 10 with non Hodgkin lymphomas and four with Hodgkin disease were studied. The prevalence was 5% of the total number of patients with AIDS. Seven

Cancer incidence in a population with a high prevalence of infection with human immunodeficiency virus type 1.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection is known to increase the incidence of Kaposi's sarcoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Parallels with other causes of immunodeficiency suggest a possible effect of HIV-1 on additional cancers. PURPOSE: This study was designed to determine the types and rates of cancers occurring in excess in the presence of HIV-1 infection. METHODS: We examined cancer incidence in a population-based open cohort with a high prevalence of HIV-1 infection. The study population was never-married men aged 25-54 years who resided in San Francisco, Calif

Increasing incidence of cancers associated with the human immunodeficiency virus epidemic.

We examined data from San Francisco and other areas participating in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program to determine the effect of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic on cancer incidence between 1973 and 1987. In this period, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma incidence has increased over 10-fold and Kaposi's sarcoma incidence has increased over 5000-fold in single San Francisco men 20 to 49 years of age. Increases in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma have been restricted to high-grade and diffuse large-cell (intermediate-grade) histological types. With the exceptions of non-H

Malignant lymphomas associated with immunodeficiency states.

An increased incidence of malignant lymphomas is common to all types of immunodeficient patients whether they be of the natural or constitutionally occurring type, acquired as in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or of iatrogenic origin as in organ transplantation. Although there is some degree of heterogeneity, the most characteristic feature of these immunodeficient states is alteration of T-cell cytotoxic function. The malignant lymphomas show a variety of relatively common features, notably: rapid onset following the appearance of the immunodeficient state, a high degree of clinica
