Activity Distribution Among the Hamstring Muscles During the Nordic Hamstring Exercise: A Multichannel Surface Electromyography Study.

This study assessed activity distribution among the hamstring muscles during the Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE). The objective was to compare muscle activity between and within muscles during the NHE to add insights in its underlying protective mechanism. Through multichannel electromyography, we measured muscle activity in male basketball players during the NHE. Electromyography was assessed at 15 locations: 5 for biceps femoris long head, 4 for semitendinosus, and 6 for semimembranosus. For each percent of the eccentric phase of the NHE, muscle activity was calculated for each electrode loc

Skin-Inspired Tactile Sensor on Cellulose Fiber Substrates with Interfacial Microstructure for Health Monitoring and Guitar Posture Feedback.

Skin-inspired flexible tactile sensors, with interfacial microstructure, are developed on cellulose fiber substrates for subtle pressure applications. Our device is made of two cellulose fiber substrates with conductive microscale structures, which emulate the randomly distributed spinosum in between the dermis and epidermis layers of the human skin. The microstructures not only permit a higher stress concentration at the tips but also generate electrical contact points and change contact resistance between the top and bottom substrates when the pressure is applied. Meanwhile, cellulose fibers

Reduced Match Exposure in the Previous 2 Matches Accounts for Hamstring Muscle Injury Incidence in Professional Football Players.

BACKGROUND: Hamstring strain injuries are one of the most prevalent injuries in football (soccer). We examined the influence of accumulated match-play exposure on the occurrence of hamstring strain injury in professional football from 2 teams (Spanish 1st Division, LaLiga) over 3 seasons, and determined specific cut-off points as indicators of injury risk. HYPOTHESIS: Overloaded players would be more likely to sustain a hamstring injury. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, controlled, observational study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 2b. METHODS: Playing time, total running distance, and high-speed run

Core Muscle Injury Producing Groin Pain in the Athlete: Diagnosis and Treatment.

Groin pain is a common cause of pain in the athlete and may be the result of a variety of causes. Musculoskeletal groin injuries are often associated with muscle strain, particularly the adductor and abdominal muscles, termed "core muscle injury" (CMI). Since the early 1960s, there have been a growing number of articles intending to identify, define, prevent, and treat this condition; to date, however, the lack of a universal definition and treatment approach has complicated the narrative around CMI. This article intends to review the recent literature surrounding CMI, identifying common defin

Are Football Players More Prone to Muscle Injury after COVID-19 Infection? The "Italian Injury Study" during the Serie a Championship.

INTRODUCTION: Football was the first sport to resume competitions after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown and promptly the hypothesis was raised of a potential relationship between the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and musculoskeletal injuries in athletes. This study aimed to confirm the association between SARS-CoV-2 infection and muscle strain injury in a large population of elite football players and to investigate if the COVID-19 severity level could affect the risk of injury. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study involving 15 Italia

Adductor Strains in Athletes.

Acute adductor injuries are a common occurrence in sport. The overall incidence of adductor strains across 25 college sports was 1.29 injuries per 1000 exposures, with men's soccer (3.15) and men's hockey (2.47) having the highest incidences. As with most muscle strains there is a high rate of recurrence for adductor strains; 18% in professional soccer and 24% in professional hockey. Effective treatment, with successful return to play, and avoidance of reinjury, can be achieved with a proper understanding of the anatomy, a thorough clinical exam yielding an accurate diagnosis, and an evidence-

Neuromechanics-Based Neural Feedback Controller for Planar Arm Reaching Movements.

Based on the principles of neuromechanics, human arm movements result from the dynamic interaction between the nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems. To develop an effective neural feedback controller for neuro-rehabilitation training, it is important to consider both the effects of muscles and skeletons. In this study, we designed a neuromechanics-based neural feedback controller for arm reaching movements. To achieve this, we first constructed a musculoskeletal arm model based on the actual biomechanical structure of the human arm. Subsequently, a hybrid neural feedback controller was deve

Severe lumbar pain in an adolescent due to idiopathic vena cava thrombosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar back pain in an adolescent is generally musculoskeletal, that is, due to a muscle strain or scoliosis. This case describes a young individual without any previous health issues who rapidly developed a life-threatening condition, though initially presenting with "only" back pain. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old Caucasian male patient was admitted twice to the emergency department with debilitating lumbar pain without neurological or vascular symptoms. Imagery showed an extensive thrombosis of the inferior vena cava. No external cause, structural abnormality, or any systemic

Musculoskeletal Pain Management and Thermotherapy: An Exploratory Analysis of Italian Physicians' Attitude, Beliefs, and Prescribing Habits.

PURPOSE: In Italy, musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders are pervasive with one-third of adults seeking medical consultation for a MSK issue in the past year. MSK pain is often treated with local heat applications (LHAs) which can be integrated into MSK care by different specialists and in different settings. Compared to analgesia and physical exercise, LHAs have been less evaluated, and the quality of randomized clinical trials is generally low. The aim of the survey is to assess the knowledge, attitude, perception/practices of general practitioners (GPs), physiatrists and sports medicine doctors t

Chronic Lower Back Pain in Weight Lifters: Epidemiology, Evaluation, and Management.

» Chronic lower back pain (LBP) is common in both nonathletes and weight lifters, but the diagnosis and treatment should be approached differently in these 2 populations based on the unique movement patterns causing the pain.» Injury rates of weight lifters are far less than those of contact sports, ranging from 1.0 to 4.4 injuries per 1,000 workout hours. However, the lower back was consistently one of the top 2 injury sites for weight lifters, accounting for anywhere from 23% to 59% of all injuries. LBP was most often associated with the squat or deadlift.» Guidelines for evaluating general

Characterizing focal muscle signal on MRI in flexor-pronator muscles' status post ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction.

OBJECTIVE: Focal high signal is commonly seen about the flexor pronator mass on MRI in some patients after ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction of the elbow. The etiology of this high signal is unclear and not described in literature. The hypothesis is that the edema we see on post-operative MRI is related to palmaris longus graft harvest rather than secondary to other causes of muscle edema such as denervation or muscle strain. METHODS AND MATERIALS: An IRB waiver-approved, retrospective search of our radiology database was conducted using the keywords "ucl," "elbow," and "reconstr

Effect of muscle pre-tension and pre-impact neck posture on the kinematic response of the cervical spine in simulated low-speed rear impacts.

Computational human body models (HBMs) can identify potential injury pathways not easily accessible through experimental studies, such as whiplash induced injuries. However, previous computational studies investigating neck response to simulated impact conditions have neglected the effect of pre-impact neck posture and muscle pre-tension on the intervertebral kinematics and tissue-level response. The purpose of the present study was addressing this knowledge gap using a detailed neck model subjected to simulated low-acceleration rear impact conditions, towards improved intervertebral kinematic

Quality of Japanese Online Information on Causes of Neck Pain: A Biopsychosocial Analysis.

Background While a considerable amount of information on neck pain is available online, the quality and comprehensiveness of this information can vary greatly. Particularly, the representation of the biopsychosocial model - which recognizes neck pain as an interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors - in online information remains unclear. Given the prevalence and accessibility of online health information, it is important to understand its quality and how it may shape individuals' understanding and management of neck pain. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze t
