PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the failure rate of primary trigger finger corticosteroid injections (CSIs) using triamcinolone versus betamethasone.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of all primary trigger finger CSIs given by a single fellowship-trained, hand surgeon over two 8-month periods. From June 2022 to January 2023, all trigger finger CSIs were performed with triamcinolone (1 mL, 40 mg/mL). From June 2023 to January 2024, all trigger finger CSIs were performed with betamethasone (1 mL, 6 mg/mL). Patient charts were reviewed at 1 year following the CSI

BACKGROUND: Orthotic intervention is a non-invasive and commonly used treatment for trigger finger (TF). Among the various splinting options, the comparative effectiveness of proximal interphalangeal joint block orthosis (PIPJ-BO) and metacarpophalangeal joint block orthosis (MCPJ-BO) remains inadequately explored. This study compared the clinical effectiveness of PIPJ-BO and MCPJ-BO in reducing pain, symptom severity, and functional limitations in patients with TF.
METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital. Forty-six patients diagnosed with TF (Quin

INTRODUCTION: Insulin resistance (IR) or metabolic syndrome (MetS) may escalate the propensity for tenosynovitis from accrual of advanced glycation end products from chronic hyperglycaemia. This study characterised IR/MetS among patients with de Quervain's tenosynovitis (DQT) and trigger finger (TF) or stenosing flexor tenosynovitis in a clinical practice setting.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, non-interventional, cross-sectional study enrolled 118 patients with DQT or TF at a general orthopaedics-hand surgery practice. IR/MetS was defined using established criteria, including HbA1c le

PURPOSE: The wide-awake local anesthesia no tourniquet (WALANT) approach has been proposed as a promising alternative to general anesthesia (GA) for hand surgery. However, evidence in the pediatric population remains limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate its impact on clinical outcomes, procedural efficiency, and institutional costs for pediatric trigger thumb (PTT) release.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on all patients (≤18 years) who underwent open PTT release by a single surgeon at a tertiary pediatric hospital between August 2020 and May 2025. Patients

INTRODUCTION: Trigger finger (TF) release is one of the most common procedures in hand surgery. It is not clear whether outcomes differ when multiple digits are released in the same operating session. The present study aimed to compare outcomes between patients undergoing single digit and multiple digit TF release.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX database (https://trinetx.com/) to identify patients undergoing trigger finger release between 2010 and 2025. Patients were categorized into single digit and multiple digit release groups. Postoperative complicati

INTRODUCTION: Finger flexor tendon injuries commonly occur as a result of direct trauma. On rare occasions, spontaneous ruptures can occur. Many pathologic processes have been described in the literature contributing to spontaneous finger flexor tendon ruptures, with most leading to progressive weakening of the tendon until it ultimately fails. We present a unique case of a Zone III spontaneous combined flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) and flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) rupture of the small finger in a 66-year-old female, 3 weeks after a corticosteroid injection for trigger finger. BACKGROUND: This study sought to assess large language models' (LLM) ability to generate correct ICD-10 and CPT codes using clinical documentation, and to determine whether note authorship, prompt design, or diagnosis/procedure type affect LLM performance. We hypothesized that LLMs can code hand surgery clinic and surgical notes with greater than 80% accuracy.
METHODS: Ninety patients evenly distributed across three orthopaedic hand surgeons and procedure types (cubital tunnel, carpal tunnel, and trigger finger release) were identified. Clinic and surgical notes were deidentified, and correct

PURPOSE: Unlike pediatric trigger thumb, which is cured by A1 pulley release, pediatric trigger fingers (PTFs) have a high rate of recurrence with A1 pulley release alone. The flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) splitting technique has the potential to mitigate recurrence without the need for more extensive dissection. This study investigates the clinical outcomes of A1 pulley release with concomitant A2 pulley partial release and FDS splitting in the treatment of PTF.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted at our institution, examining patients with PTF from January 2010 to July 2025

BACKGROUND: Trigger finger (stenosing tenosynovitis) reflects abnormal tendon-pulley mechanics, primarily at the A1 pulley; however, objective assessment during functional motion remains limited in routine clinical practice. We evaluated electrical contact resistance (ECR) from a wearable tactile sensor during standardized digit motion and examined its association with symptoms.
METHODS: Nine participants with Green grade II-III trigger finger were prospectively enrolled. An origami-inspired pentagon-knot graphene-paper tactile sensor measured ECR over the A1 and A2 pulleys during repeated fl

A trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, occurs when a digit becomes locked in a flexed position due to inflammation of the tendon sheath, restricting smooth tendon excursion. Pediatric trigger fingers (PTF) are less common and consequently less well-characterized - frequently classified as congenital - although the etiology remains heterogeneous and incompletely understood. In this case study, we explore the case of a three-year-old male with flexion deformities of bilateral long and ring fingers. The patient underwent two trigger finger surgeries; the first was a release of t

BACKGROUND: Trigger finger (TF) is a common hand condition often requiring surgery. Open surgery (OS) is the standard treatment, with high success rates. Percutaneous release (PR) offers potential advantages regarding cost, procedure time, and recovery, although its effectiveness remains debated in different clinical settings. This study compares outcomes, complications, and resource use between PR and OS in a Swedish hospital setting where PR was newly introduced.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study including 110 patients treated for TF between 2018 and 2020 at the Depa

PURPOSE: The study investigates the impact of resident involvement in orthopedic hand surgery, focusing on operative and room times, as well as the associated opportunity costs to physicians and the hospital. The primary objective was to examine the impact of resident participation on operative times and total surgical room times in comparison to attending-only procedures. The secondary objective was to assess the cost of resident education by analyzing differences in surgical efficiency for the procedures studied.
METHODS: Data from a single academic teaching hospital were analyzed from 2020

Purpose The primary objective of this review was to report the results of trigger finger release (TFR) under real-time ultrasound (US) guidance in a real-world population, including patients with concomitant hand issues and other comorbidities. Method A retrospective review of the corresponding author's case log for 2023 was conducted to identify all patients who underwent an index, middle, ring, or little finger micro-incision TFR from February through September of that year under real-time US guidance (ultrasound TFR (uTFR)). The preoperative demographics collected included triggering severi

Dupuytren's disease and trigger finger are common fibroproliferative disorders that may coexist clinically. Although their clinical association has been previously described, reports emphasizing simultaneous MRI findings of both entities are limited. We describe a 51-year-old woman with progressive hand stiffness and digital triggering. MRI demonstrated low-signal palmar cord-like thickening with marked enhancement, consistent with early Dupuytren's disease, along with thickening and enhancement of the A1 pulley and associated flexor tendon sheath changes compatible with stenosing tenosynoviti

Accurate assessment of the A1 pulley is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of trigger finger, particularly in ultrasound-guided percutaneous release. Although high-resolution ultrasound is widely used to evaluate pulley morphology, the validity of sonographic measurements of A1 pulley length has not been clearly established against anatomical reference standard. This study evaluated the reliability and validity of ultrasound for measuring A1 pulley length and thickness in human cadavers and assessed the reproducibility of A2 pulley length. Twenty fingers from five fresh-frozen cadaveric

BACKGROUND: Surgical release is an effective treatment for refractory cases of trigger finger; however, the optimal suture material for skin closure remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis compares postoperative outcomes of absorbable versus nonabsorbable sutures following trigger finger (TF) release.
METHODS: This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines, including a total of 5 studies in the final analysis, comparing absorbable versus nonabsorbable sutures in TF release. Data extraction included suture type, and reported outcomes such as wound complications, functional

Surgical site infection (SSI) remains an important concern in hand surgery, despite low baseline infection rates, especially in clean, elective soft tissue procedures. This manuscript synthesizes current evidence and guidelines on preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis in hand surgery, focusing on procedure type, patient-specific risk factors, and implications for antimicrobial stewardship. Contemporary guidelines advise against routine prophylaxis in clean orthopedic soft tissue procedures, yet practice patterns vary. Evidence from retrospective studies and prospective trials consistently shows

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution of a corticosteroid solution following transtendinous injection at the level of the proximal phalanx. Secondary aims were to explore the patient reported outcomes and analgesic use day-by-day for 6 weeks.
METHODS: Twenty trigger digits in 19 patients were injected with a mixture of corticosteroid and radiopaque contrast using a standardized transtendinous technique. Frontal and lateral radiographs obtained immediately after injection were independently assessed by three observers to classify the spread of the solution as int
