Systemic Hormonal Contraceptive Use Is Associated With Greater Odds of Rotator Cuff Tears, Shoulder Instability, Dislocation, and Other Shoulder Pathologies: A Propensity Matched Epidemiological Study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether systemic estrogen-only, progestin-only, or combined hormonal contraceptives (HCs) are associated with increased risk of shoulder pathologies in reproductive-age females. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of female patients presenting to clinic from 2013 to 2020 and aged 13-50 with 5 years of follow-up was conducted using the TriNetX database. Patients prescribed estrogen-only, progestin-only, or combined HCs were matched 1:1 to controls using propensity score matching. Odds ratios (ORs) 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and P values were calculated after 5 years

Comparison of Physical Therapy, Corticosteroid Injections, and Ultrasound-Guided Barbotage for Nonoperative and Operative Management of Calcific Tendinitis.

BACKGROUND: Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder is a common, painful rotator cuff disorder with both nonoperative and operative treatment options. The optimal nonoperative modality remains unclear, and it is not well understood how previous nonoperative treatments influence eventual surgical outcomes. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to compare success rates, defined as avoidance of surgery, among 3 nonoperative treatments for calcific tendinitis: physical therapy (PT), corticosteroid injection (CSI), and ultrasound-guided barbotage (USB). For patients who underwent surgery,

Ultrasound and Fluoroscopy-Guided Percutaneous Hydrotenotomy with Open Conversion for Symptomatic Periligamentous Calcification of the Medial Collateral Ligament: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Periligamentous calcification of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) is a rare condition that is mechanistically similar to calcific tendinitis, resulting from the deposition of calcium hydroxyapatite crystals in periarticular muscular attachments. Whereas most documented cases of periligamentous MCL calcification resolve with conservative therapy, little guidance exists in the orthopedic literature regarding viable operative treatment options for patients with symptoms refractory to conservative management. To our knowledge, this is one of only two case reports reporting the fi

Rapid Radiographic Improvement in Large Multilobulated Shoulder Calcific Tendinitis After Ultrasound-Guided Prolotherapy and Adjunctive Nutritional and Metabolic Support: A Case Report.

Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder is a common disorder characterized by calcium hydroxyapatite deposition within or near the rotator cuff tendons. Although the condition is often self-limited, large multilobulated calcific deposits may be less responsive to conservative treatment and can prompt consideration of more invasive procedures. We report a case of a 49-year-old man who presented with acute severe right shoulder pain, sleep disturbance, and marked functional limitation. At presentation, pain was 10/10 on the visual analog scale, and the shoulder range of motion could not be formally

Calcific tendinitis of an extensor tendon misdiagnosed as stenosing tenosynovitis: A case report.

OBJECTIVE: Calcific tendonitis refers to the pathological deposition of calcium salts in or around tendons, leading to local inflammation and pain. It is commonly seen in the shoulder region, and occurrences in the wrist or hand are uncommon. This case report aims to describe a patient with calcific tendonitis of the wrist extensor tendons and to highlight the successful use of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) as a treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: Calcific Tendonitis of Extensor Tendons was diagnosed both via X-ray and Computed Tomography (CT) and was successfully treated with shockwave.

Aneurysmal Bone Cyst of the Coracoid Process: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign yet locally aggressive lesions that can cause significant bone destruction. Involvement of the coracoid process is exceedingly rare, and the diagnosis is particularly challenging due to its atypical presentation. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 37-year-old male with right shoulder pain initially attributed to calcific tendinitis. Advanced imaging incidentally revealed an asymptomatic ABC of the coracoid process. Surgical management involved intralesional curettage and cavity filling with a biphasic calcium sulfate-hydroxyapatite b

Calcific tendinitis with intraosseous migration mimicking malignancy.

Calcific tendinitis with intraosseous migration represents a diagnostic pitfall that frequently simulates aggressive bone neoplasms on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), potentially triggering unnecessary oncologic workup. The authors report the case of a 26-year-old woman on immunosuppressive therapy presenting with acute, debilitating left shoulder pain. Initial MRI demonstrated a permeative-appearing process of the proximal humeral metaphysis with extensive bone marrow edema and cortical erosion, prompting a referral to orthopedic oncology. Subsequent multimodality correlation and computed t

Is Calcific Tendinitis a Risk Factor for Rotator Cuff Tears? A Retrospective Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Based Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: The association between calcific tendinitis (CaT) and rotator cuff tears (RCTs) remains controversial, and it is unclear whether CaT represents a predisposing risk factor for tendon tears. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between CaT and RCTs using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with a comprehensive evaluation of tear prevalence, tendon involvement, and anatomical overlap patterns between calcifications and tears. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included 328 patients who underwent shoulder MRI for shoulder pain between 2021 and 2024. The CaT group

Case Report: C-arm-assisted peri-hip endoscopic debridement for calcific tendinitis at the deep insertion of the gluteus maximus.

Calcific tendinitis commonly affects the rotator cuff; however, involvement of the deep insertion of the gluteus maximus is uncommon and has been described only in limited reports. Deep-seated hip lesions may be difficult to identify on plain radiographs, potentially resulting in delayed diagnosis. We report the case of a 53-year-old woman who presented with atraumatic lateral hip pain and restricted range of motion for 1 month, that was unresponsive to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Plain radiograph findings were inconclusive. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed inflammato

Periarticular Soft Tissue Disorders: Enthesopathies, Tendinopathies, and Bursitis-Pathophysiology and Radiotherapeutic Approaches.

Periarticular soft tissue disorders, encompassing enthesopathies, tendinopathies, and bursitis, contribute substantially to musculoskeletal pain and disability, particularly in adult populations. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and radiotherapeutic management of major periarticular syndromes, including painful shoulder syndrome, lateral epicondylitis, greater trochanteric pain syndrome, and plantar fasciitis. We detail how these conditions often present as a continuum of overlapping pathology at the enthesis, tendon, and peri‑tend

Editorial Commentary: Good Outcomes Do Not Necessarily Mean Effective Treatment: A Critical Appraisal of the Causal Relation Between Treatment and Outcome in Calcific Tendinopathy.

Calcific tendinopathy of the shoulder can be treated using a variety of approaches, including noninvasive, minimally invasive, and arthroscopic procedures. Although numerous studies have reported favorable outcomes, many of them lack appropriate controls, making it difficult to differentiate between the effects of treatment and the natural history of the disease. Because calcific tendinitis has a strong tendency toward spontaneous resolution, clinical improvement after treatment alone does not establish causality. Furthermore, placebo effects may substantially contribute to symptom relief. Con

Extracorporeal shockwaves therapy for finger stenosing tenosynovitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Stenosing tenosynovitis is a common chronic tendon disease that seriously affects daily life and working ability. However, its treatment is very challenging and requires more effective treatment methods. A large number of clinical studies have shown that extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) may relieve the symptoms of stenosing tenosynovitis, but there are no published reviews or meta-analyses specifically and comprehensively evaluating its efficacy for this disease. Therefore, through conducting a meta-analysis, this study systematically evaluated the therapeutic effect of ESW
