BACKGROUND: With advancements in artificial intelligence, patients increasingly turn to generative AI models like ChatGPT for medical advice. This study explores the utility of ChatGPT 4.0 (GPT-4.0), the most recent version of ChatGPT, as an interim diagnostician for common hand conditions. Secondarily, the study evaluates the terminology GPT-4.0 associates with each condition by assessing its ability to generate condition-specific questions from a patient's perspective.
METHODS: Five common hand conditions were identified: trigger finger (TF), Dupuytren's Contracture (DC), carpal tunnel synd

Trauma, particularly surgical trauma, has been suggested as a potential trigger for Dupuytren's disease (DD). This systematic review examined the prevalence of DD after surgical and non-surgical hand trauma by conducting thorough searches of the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane and Scopus databases. Qualitative methods were used to synthesise the data and summarize the findings that were unsuitable for meta-analysis. The findings revealed an increased risk of DD associated with exposure to hand-transmitted vibration, sports-related trauma and distal radial fractures. Surgical procedures such as trigge

PURPOSE: The role of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine is rapidly evolving, with potential to improve both the clinician and patient experience. We sought to evaluate whether popular AI text-to-image generators could create anatomically accurate images of common hand surgery procedures. We hypothesized that the AI-generated images would not be adequate as patient education materials.
METHODS: We queried five AI text-to-image generators: Craiyon, DALL-E, DeepSeek, Gemini, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion. They were given the prompt, "Create an anatomically accurate image with labels of

Tendinopathies around the hand and wrist are common. Most are diagnosed easily with a thorough history and clinical examination. Common conditions involving the hand and wrist include trigger finger, de Quervain tenosynovitis, intersection syndrome, third and fourth extensor compartment tenosynovitis, extensor carpi ulnaris tendinitis, and flexor carpi radialis tendinitis. Management strategies include nonsurgical treatments comprising immobilization, corticosteroid injections, or hand therapy, and surgical techniques including tendon release.

Lateral epicondylitis, de Quervain tenosynovitis, and trigger finger are among the most common tendinopathies of the upper extremity. Lateral epicondylitis is a common condition that can be very frustrating to patients. Many patients will improve without any acute interventions. Physical therapy has been shown to be helpful as initial treatment, and surgery can be helpful for persistent symptoms. de Quervain tenosynovitis similarly responds well to nonsurgical modalities, including brace treatment and injections, and surgery can be effective for recalcitrant cases. Finally, trigger finger is a

INTRODUCTION: Most patients with de Quervain tenosynovitis are well managed with nonsurgical treatments, however, wrist pain persists or recurs in some patients, affecting activities of daily living. This study aimed to identify patient-specific factors associated with persistent or recurrent symptoms after conservative treatment of de Quervain tenosynovitis.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: We retrospectively collected data from patients with de Quervain tenosynovitis who had been conservatively treated. The failure group comprised 28 patients who had received surgical intervention and had persistent

PURPOSE: The use of prophylactic antibiotics in patients with existing total hip or knee arthroplasty undergoing elective hand surgery has not been studied. We tested the null hypothesis that perioperative antibiotic administration is not associated with the incidence of prosthetic joint infection (PJI) in patients undergoing elective, soft tissue hand surgery.
METHODS: We used a large, national administrative claims database to identify patients with existing total hip or knee arthroplasty undergoing soft tissue hand surgery (carpal tunnel release, de Quervain release, trigger finger release

BACKGROUND: Corticosteroid injections are a first-line treatment of trigger finger and de Quervain's tenosynovitis. Little research has evaluated preinjection patient-reported outcomes as a predictive factor for treatment success following corticosteroid injection. We hypothesized that patients with less pretreatment impairment would demonstrate greater post-treatment improvement than patients whose function was more severely impaired.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed prospectively collected Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) upper extremity (UE) scores in p

Trigger finger is commonly attributed to thickening of the A1 pulley or flexor tendons. Although calcific tendinitis is well recognized in regions such as the shoulder, calcification within the A1 pulley itself is extremely rare and seldom reported as a primary cause of triggering. We describe a 43-year-old woman who presented with painful triggering of the right little finger, accompanied by morning stiffness, snapping, and focal tenderness with warmth over the volar metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint. Radiographs and high-resolution ultrasonography revealed a calcific deposit in the superficial

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively evaluate outcomes of an ultrasound-guided A1 pulley fenestration release technique using small-gauge (hypodermic or spinal) needles for the treatment of trigger finger (TF).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all TF fenestration release procedures performed by two musculoskeletal radiologists between July 2020 and August 2024 was conducted. The technique included a steroid injection after release. Preprocedural and postprocedural functional Quinnell grades and any immediate complications from the procedure report were primary outcome measures.

UNLABELLED: OBJECTIVE: Tendon tears cause significant disability, especially in the elderly. Lipid metabolism was shown to play a role in tendon tear pathogenesis. Statins, which lower cholesterol levels, have been associated with tendinopathies and tendon tears as possible adverse events. This systematic review evaluates the association between statin use and tendon rupture risk, as well as statins' influence on tendon healing after repair. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search was conducted on PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar databases using specific search strings related to statins

Trigger finger (TF), traditionally viewed as a stenosing tenosynovitis at the A1 pulley, is commonly treated with corticosteroid injections or pulley release. This case report describes a 61-year-old female with a refractory TF who did not respond to a previous corticosteroid injection. Diagnostic imaging revealed insertional tendinopathy of the flexor digitorum superficialis and flexor digitorum profundus with bony spurs, rather than pathology at the A1 pulley. The patient was successfully treated with two sessions of ultrasound-guided prolotherapy directed at the tendon entheses, resulting i

Imaging is essential for evaluating tenosynovitis, bursitis, and pulley lesions. Both ultrasound (US) and MR imaging detect fluid accumulation and synovial thickening, key for diagnosing tenosynovitis and bursitis. They also reveal A1 pulley thickening in trigger fingers and A2-A4 pulley strain or tears in closed flexor pulley injuries (climber's fingers). US enables dynamic assessments in real-time and detects hypervascularity, while MR imaging provides detailed insights into the extent of inflammation in the soft tissues and bone through fluid-sensitive sequences and contrast enhancement. BACKGROUND: Trigger finger (TF) causes pain and functional impairment. Previous studies have associated TF with carpal tunnel syndrome, which has been linked to obesity. This study investigated the relationship between obesity and the prevalence of TF.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using data from the TriNetX Research Network (2006-2024). Patients with risk factors for TF (rheumatoid arthritis, gout, amyloidosis, prior carpal tunnel release, spontaneous rupture of flexor tendons, hypothyroidism, Dupuytren disease, and diabetes mellitus) were excluded.
