Predictors of Postsurgical Outcomes in Trigger Finger Release: A Retrospective Analysis.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine factors associated with recurrent trigger finger and postoperative infection after trigger finger release (TFR) surgery. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted to examine the variables that impact 4 postsurgical outcomes: postoperative corticosteroid injection, repeat surgery within 1 year, emergency department (ED) visits, and antibiotic use within 90 days. Variables examined included age, sex (male/female), race, body mass index, smoking status, and diabetes. We also analyzed hand and finger involvement, history of TFR, prior corticosteroid inje

MCID, SCB, and PASS Thresholds After Percutaneous Trigger Finger Release With or Without Corticosteroid Injection.

Background/Objectives: Percutaneous A1 pulley release effectively treats trigger finger, but the additional benefit of concomitant corticosteroid injection remains debated. Moreover, minimal clinically important difference (MCID), substantial clinical benefit (SCB), and patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) thresholds have not been well established for this procedure, limiting patient-centered interpretation of outcomes. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 80 patients (40 per group) who underwent percutaneous trigger finger release alone (PR) or with adjunctive triamcinolone in

Atypical Trigger Finger Associated With Proximal Flexor Digitorum Superficialis Dynamic Instability Diagnosed With Ultrasound and Treated With Hydrodissection: A Case Report.

Trigger finger is classically attributed to stenosing pathology at the first annular pulley, and the standard diagnostic and therapeutic approach is largely based on that model. However, some patients present with typical triggering symptoms despite normal distal pulley findings on physical examination and static ultrasonography. We report the case of a 25-year-old female cook with painful triggering of the left third and fourth digits. Examination demonstrated reproducible digital catching without focal tenderness over the involved A1 pulleys, whereas focal tenderness was present at the media

Efficacy of Subcutaneous Kenacort Injection for Trigger Finger: A Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, is a common hand condition that occurs when a tendon or its sheath becomes swollen, inflamed, or degenerated, leading to pain, difficulty with movement, and sometimes a clicking sensation. Steroid injection is the first-line treatment, typically administered as a peritendinous or intrasheath injection. Subcutaneous injections are less commonly used; although they are simpler and generally less painful, they are infrequently performed due to limited supporting literature. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 79

Effects of cassava wax immersion on pain, pressure pain threshold, and upper extremity function among patients with trigger finger.

BACKGROUND: Trigger finger causes pain and impaired hand function. Ultrasound and paraffin wax are commonly used but have cost and accessibility limitations; cassava wax may be a low-cost alternative, though its effectiveness remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the immediate, short-term, and post-intervention effects of cassava wax immersion combined with ultrasound therapy on pain, pressure pain threshold, and upper extremity function in patients with trigger finger. METHODS: In this single-blind, randomised controlled trial, 38 participants were randomly assigned to two groups ( n = 19

Educational interventions in hand and upper extremity surgery: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Hand and upper extremity surgery is increasingly performed in ambulatory settings, placing greater responsibility on patients to manage their postoperative recovery. While the readability of patient education materials has been studied, the formats used and their impact on postoperative outcomes have not been comprehensively synthesized. METHODS: A literature search of PubMed and Web of Science was conducted for eligible studies published between 2015 and 2025 that included patients undergoing or being considered for upper extremity surgery and who received an educational interv

Cost-Effectiveness of Contemporary Trigger Finger Treatment Strategies: A Medicare Payer Perspective.

PURPOSE: Trigger finger is typically managed with corticosteroid injections followed by surgical release if injections fail. Office-based ultrasound-guided percutaneous A1 pulley release (USGPR) has emerged as a contemporary alternative that provides definitive surgical treatment in office settings, potentially eliminating both the recurrence risk of injections and the facility costs of traditional surgery. However, USGPR device costs and cost-effectiveness remain uncertain. Prior cost-effectiveness analyses do not include USGPR as a comparator and use reimbursement data from 2016 and earlier

Quantitative Analysis of Flexor Tendon Gliding Sounds of the Hand in Healthy Volunteers Using a Digital Stethoscope.

BACKGROUND: Smooth flexor tendon gliding depends on the structural harmony between the flexor tendon and its sheath. Because tendon dimensions and joint kinematics differ among digits, gliding dynamics may also differ, but in vivo assessment during active motion remains limited. The purpose of this study was to clarify whether the acoustic characteristics of flexor tendon gliding sounds at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint differ among the index, middle, and ring fingers. METHODS: Gliding sounds were recorded from 40 hands of 20 healthy volunteers using a digital stethoscope placed at the p

[Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) in hand surgery].

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) acts as an acoustic wave via momentum transfer and mechanotransduction in a plethora of regenerative ways. Scaphoid non-unions benefit from high-energetic focused ESWT. In lunate necrosis aka Morbus Kienböck focused high-energetic ESWT can reduce pain and improve MRI. In CMC 1 osteoarthritis focused ESWT appears to be clinically equal to intraarticular ultrasound-guided hyaluronic acid injection with more pronounced effects 6 months after therapy in the ESWT group. Tendinopathies of the hand can be treated with both, radial and focused ESWT, especially i

Outcomes of Conservative and Surgical Management of Trigger Thumb in Children Up to Five Years at a Tertiary Care Center in Kolkata.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric trigger thumb is a developmental condition characterized by flexion deformity of the interphalangeal joint due to constriction at the A1 pulley. Although spontaneous resolution has been reported, optimal treatment timing remains controversial. This study aimed to compare outcomes between conservative and surgical management in children aged up to five years. METHODOLOGY: A prospective analytical cohort study was conducted at a tertiary care center in Kolkata over 18 months. Fifty-eight children with clinically diagnosed trigger thumb were enrolled. All participants ini

Flexor Tendon Rupture after One Corticosteroid Injection in the Treatment of Trigger Finger: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Corticosteroid injection is a widely accepted first-line treatment for trigger finger. However, it carries a potential risk of flexor tendon rupture. This complication is rare, particularly after a single injection. We present a 59-year-old woman who experienced spontaneous ruptures of the flexor digitorum profundus and superficialis tendons of the middle finger 2 months after a single corticosteroid injection for trigger finger. We review the literature and discuss underlying mechanisms for flexor tendon rupture. To minimise the risk of this complication, we recommend administering extra-tend

GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Use and A1 Pulley Release After Corticosteroid Injection for Trigger Finger in Type 2 Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have a higher incidence of trigger finger and are more likely to require operative A1 pulley release. The impact of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) therapy on treatment progression remains unclear. This study evaluated the association between GLP-1RA use and progression to operative A1 pulley release following corticosteroid injection for trigger finger in patients with T2DM. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using the TriNetX Research Network to identify adults with T2DM and trigger finger who underwen

What Do Patients Want? Outcome Measures in a Diverse World.

PURPOSE: Quantifying outcomes of medical interventions has evolved but challenges remain in hand surgery. Initially, hand surgeons used concrete assessments like range of motion and/or pinch strength. With a shift toward patient-centered care, numerous pathology-specific patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were developed. These measures typically used standardized closed-ended outcomes and mostly originated from western countries. However, it is unclear how well measures with specific items capture diverse patients' values. Therefore, we used an open-ended PROM, the Patient-Specific Func

Transcultural Adaptation of the Spanish Version of the ABILHAND Scale for Hand Surgery in a Colombian Population of Patients with Hand Pathologies.

PURPOSE: Because manual ability is a latent and complex variable that is closely linked to an individual's well-being and daily functioning, it is important to assess it through patient-reported outcome measures that capture the patient's own perception of dexterity in everyday life. This study aimed to develop a Spanish version of the ABILHAND-Hs scale that is equivalent to the original but adapted to evaluate the most prevalent hand pathologies in Colombia. METHODS: A group of bilingual experts translated the ABILHAND scale from English into Spanish using a forward-backward translation meth

Orthopedic visits and procedures preceding rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis: A nationwide case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may initially present with nonspecific musculoskeletal symptoms before formal diagnosis, often prompting orthopedic visits and subsequent orthopedic procedures. We aimed to examine whether such procedures are more frequent among individuals prior to RA diagnosis compared to RA-free matched controls. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-control study using Leumit Healthcare Services electronic database. Each subject diagnosed with RA between 2002 and 2023 was matched with 5 controls based on age, sex, and socioeconomic status (SES). Orthopedic visits

Fibrotic disease co-occurrence and associated risk of subsequent organ failure: a nationwide matched cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Shared pathophysiologic features of fibrotic diseases, irrespective of anatomical site, have been suggested from epidemiologic, genetic and mechanistic studies. Improvement in diagnostic capabilities and emergence of antifibrotic medications warrants identification of trajectories of fibrotic diseases and earlier identification of patients at risk of organ failure as they may have a fibrotic component. METHODS: We used Danish nationwide health registries to identify all adults with a first-time diagnosis of any of nine major fibrotic diseases from 1998 to 2024. Co-occurrence betwe
