Subacute (De Quervain) thyroiditis during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) is a new disease whose clinical presentation and potential complications are not yet fully understood. One of these possible reported complications is the onset of subacute (De Quervain) thyroiditis (SAT). Here a series of cases of SAT during the COVID‐19 pandemic are reported, and a possible correlation between these 2 entities is extrapolated.

Management Outcome of de Quervain's Disease with Corticosteroid Injection Versus Surgical Decompression.

BACKGROUND: This randomized clinical trial was undertaken to document the clinical presentation of de Quervain's disease and evaluate the outcome of management with triamcinolone acetonide (TAC) injection versus surgical decompression. METHODS: Half of the patients were assigned to the corticosteroid injection group (group A) and half to the surgery group (group B). In group A, 40 mg of TAC was injected into the affected first extensor compartment. In group B, surgical decompression of first extensor compartment was performed. RESULTS: There were 56 patients with 38 (67.85 %) females and 18(

Snapping wrist due to bony prominence and tenosynovitis of the first extensor compartment: A case report.

BACKGROUND: A snapping wrist is a rare symptom that results from the sudden impingement of one anatomic structure against another, subsequently causing a sudden movement only during wrist movement. CASE SUMMARY: A 30-year-old woman with a history of right wrist contusion reported right wrist snapping after overuse. The snapping became symptomatic after moving heavy objects. The pain persisted even when she received 1 mo of conservative treatment. Physical examination showed painful wrist snapping during wrist radioulnar motion and thumb abduction-adduction. Radiography demonstrated bone overg

De Quervain Tenosynovitis: An Evaluation of the Epidemiology and Utility of Multiple Injections Using a National Database.

PURPOSE: We hypothesized that repeat injections are associated with a decreased rate of success and that the success rate of injections correlates with patient comorbidities. METHODS: Using a commercially available insurance database, patients diagnosed with De Quervain tenosynovitis were identified using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision and Tenth Revision codes and stratified by therapeutic interventions, including therapy, injections, and surgery, as well as comorbidities. Injection failure was defined as a patient receiving a repeat injection or subsequent surgical

Effects of local anaesthetics (neural therapy) on pain and hand functions in patients with De Quervain tenosynovitis: A prospective randomised controlled study.

OBJECTIVE: De Quervain tenosynovitis is the most common cause of lateral wrist pain. The diagnosis can be made with the Finkelstein test when pain is provoked with wrist ulnar deviation. Conservative treatment including rest, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication and physical therapy is applied first, then there may be a need for corticosteroid injections, and in resistant cases, surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of neural therapy (NT) on pain and hand functions in patients with De Quervain tenosynovitis. METHODS: A total of 36 patients admitted between May

Relationship between Information and Communication Device Usage and Development of Hand Disorders.

This study examined the association between hand disorders and time spent using information and communication devices. The participants in this study, conducted between January 2017 and 2020, were 150 healthy university students. They were tested for carpal tunnel syndrome and De Quervain's tenosynovitis. Average daily device usage time was found to be 5.76 ± 3.00 (1.9-16.2) h. Smartphones were used the most, followed by personal computers and gaming consoles. However, usage time did not vary significantly by device type. Intensive users were significantly more likely to have De Quervain's ten

Management of de Quervain Tenosynovitis: A Critical Analysis Review.

»: Most cases of de Quervain tenosynovitis can be managed with nonoperative measures, and the mainstay of treatment is corticosteroid injection (CSI). The use of ultrasound may improve the accuracy of injections and can help to identify and localize injections to separate subcompartments. »: For patients who are in the third trimester of pregnancy or breastfeeding, there is no contraindication to CSI as studies have shown that it can provide optimal symptomatic relief to the mother without impacting the baby. »: When nonoperative treatment is unsuccessful, surgical release of the first dorsa

[Scanning Technique in Wrist and Hand Ultrasonography].

This guide to ultrasound examination of the wrist and hand describes the basic scanning planes and contains corresponding high-resolution ultrasound images. The patient and probe positionings are explained in a simplified step-by-step manner using schematic drawings. This standard and simple examination technique seems to be an appropriate way to improve the learning curve of novice musculoskeletal sonographers. In wrist section, an emphasis is placed on the carpal tunnel and extensor tendons evaluation. In the hand region, the scanning of the flexor pulley system and the flexor pollicis longu

Modified Staged Finkelstein Test for the Identification of Intracompartmental Septum in Patients with De Quervain's Disease.

Background: The intracompartmental septum isolating the extensor pollicis brevis (EPB) has been reported to affect the patient's response to nonsurgical treatment in de Quervain's disease. A simple physical test called the modified staged Finkelstein test was developed to evaluate the septum; the result of this test was compared with those of the pre-existing physical test (EPB entrapment test) and ultrasonographic (US) examination of the septum. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 52 patients who underwent two clinical tests, including the modified staged Finkelstein test and the EPB entrapm

The Radial Synergy Test: An Aid to Diagnose de Quervain's Tenosynovitis.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of de Quervain's tenosynovitis is made clinically. Finkelstein's and Eichoff's tests are commonly utilized examination maneuvers. Their specificity has been questioned due to a propensity to provoke pain in asymptomatic patients. Using the principle of synergism, the novel radial synergy test takes advantage of isometric contraction of the first dorsal compartment with resisted abduction of the small finger. METHODS: Electromyography was performed on 3 authors and the first dorsal compartment sampled during the maneuver. Sensitivity evaluation was performed via retrospec

Thyroiditis and SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: a review.

The world is dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic due to the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Amongst the extra-pulmonary manifestations presented by Covid-19 patients, thyroiditis form part of the spectrum of visceral involvement linked to SARS-CoV-2. In this review, we will describe the various documented clinical forms of thyroiditis (inflammatory thyroiditis, subacute or de Quervain's thyroiditis, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis or Hashimoto's disease, painless (silent) postpartum thyroiditis) to facilitate their diagnosis in more or less symptomatic Covid-19 patients and to provide guidance for pati

COVID-19-Associated Subacute Thyroiditis: Evidence-Based Data From a Systematic Review.

Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is a thyroid disease of viral or post-viral origin. Whether SAT represents a complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is still unclear. Our aim was to systematically review the literature to 1) explore the size of the literature about SAT in COVID-19 and 2) evaluate the clinical characteristics of SAT. PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus were searched until April 20, 2021. Original papers, case reports, and case series reporting SAT in COVID-19 patients were included. Authors and their c

COVID-19 vaccine-associated subacute thyroiditis: an unusual suspect for de Quervain's thyroiditis.

Subacute thyroiditis following vaccination is an uncommon presentation of thyrotoxicosis. As the world undertakes its largest immunisation campaign to date in an attempt to protect the population from COVID-19 infections, an increasing number of rare post vaccine side effects are being observed. We report a case of a middle-aged woman who presented with painful thyroid swelling following the second dose of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) with clinical, biochemical and imaging features consistent with destructive thyrotoxicosis. Symptomatic management only was required for

Subacute thyroiditis after SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Viral infections are considered as etiologic factors of subacute thyroiditis. The true incidence of subacute thyroiditis, caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection, is probably considerable since it is often masked by more dramatic affection of the respiratory system. This report presents two female patients who developed de Quervain's thyroiditis after COVID-19 disease.

Pregnancy-related Hand and Wrist Problems.

Hand and wrist disorders are common during pregnancy. Most of these problems develop during the third trimester when hormonal changes, fluid retention, and weight gain are maximum. This review study aimed to discuss pregnancy-related hand and wrist problems, and provide an overview of their pathology, clinical presentations, clinical examinations, and treatment options. Pregnancy-related carpal tunnel syndrome and De Quervain disease are among the most encountered disorders; however, neuralgic amyotrophy, pyogenic granuloma in hand, ligamentous laxity of the joints, arthralgia, and exacerbatio
