Epidemiology of pre-cancerous cervical lesions among women in Adama, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Cervical pre-cancer is a distinct change in the epithelial cells of the transformation zone of the cervix; the cells begin developing in an abnormal fashion in the presence of persistent or long-term high-risk oncogenic human papillomavirus infection. It is estimated that out of women infected with human papillomavirus, 10% will develop pre-cancerous changes in their cervical tissue. About 8% of the women who develop these changes will develop pre-cancer limited to the outer layers of the cervical cells, and about 1.6% will develop invasive cancer. The main purpose of the study was

False-positive HIV-1 RNA detection after CAR-T cell therapy in a multiple myeloma patient: multi-assay comparison confirms dual-target cross-reactivity.

Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapies, employing lentiviral vectors, may cause false-positive HIV-1 RNA results due to amplification of vector-derived sequences. We describe a case of a patient with multiple myeloma undergoing CAR-T therapy tested with two dual-target assays testing positive at low copies for HIV-1 RNA. A single-target assay consistently tested negative. HIV serological tests remained non-reactive. This case highlights the importance of assay target design in interpreting HIV RNA results after CAR-T therapy and supports the importance of serological tests and alte

Clinicopathologic characteristics and predictors of treatment uptake among patients with cervical cancer managed at Jimma University Medical Center, Southwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer remains a major public health concern in Ethiopia because of limited screening and delayed diagnosis, resulting in high mortality. Most patients present with advanced-stage disease, predominantly squamous cell carcinoma. Despite the World Health Organization’s 90%–70%–90% strategy, screening coverage is low, and access to treatment remains inadequate. This study assessed the clinicopathologic characteristics and predictors of treatment uptake among cervical cancer patients managed at Jimma University Medical Center in southwest Ethiopia to inform evidence-based inte

Extended High-Risk HPV Genotyping With BD Onclarity Enhances Anal Cancer Screening Among High-Risk Populations: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Anal cancer rates are rising among women, immunocompromised individuals, and Men who have sex with Men (MSM), independent of HIV status. While high-resolution anoscopy remains the diagnostic standard, limited access has increased interest in alternative screening. HPV testing now complements or replaces cytology in cervical cancer prevention, but evidence for anal screening, especially using extended genotyping platforms like BD Onclarity, remains limited. METHODS: This single center cross-sectional study enrolled high-risk individuals undergoing anal cancer screening from May 202

Callitrichine herpesvirus 3 in the common marmoset is a model of Epstein-Barr virus infection and associated lymphoma.

Herpesviruses, such as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), are thought to potentially play a significant role in multiple disease processes, including neoplasia, multiple sclerosis (MS), and more recently, Alzheimer's disease (AD). Animal models remain vital tools for understanding these diseases and developing therapeutics. Callitrichine herpesvirus 3 (CalHV-3) was identified in the early 2000s in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). Although phylogenetically related to human EBV, the biological similarities between CalHV-3 and EBV have not been thoroughly characterized. Over 450 marmosets from fi

Triple checkpoint blockade of PD-1, Tim-3, and Lag-3 enhances adoptive T cell immunotherapy in a mouse model of ovarian cancer.

The five-year survival rate for ovarian cancer patients remains below 50%, underscoring the need for innovative therapies. One promising approach involves engineering T cells to specifically target proteins uniquely overexpressed in tumors, thereby controlling tumor growth without toxicity to healthy tissues. Mesothelin (MSLN) contributes to the malignant and invasive phenotype in ovarian cancer and has limited expression in healthy cells, making it a candidate immunotherapy target. Our previous results in a mouse model of ovarian cancer demonstrated that T cells engineered to express a T cell

Silent intruders: Hematolymphoid neoplasms revealed in the jaws: a series of three cases.

The head and neck regions, rich in lymph nodes, are common initial sites for nodal and extranodal hematolymphoid neoplasms, particularly B-cell neoplasms. Lymphomas, including Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's types, range from indolent to aggressive and often affect the oral and maxillofacial areas. Plasma cell neoplasms, such as solitary bone plasmacytoma (SBP) and solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma (SEP), must be distinguished from multiple myeloma (MM) due to varied treatment modalities. Diagnosing these neoplasms is challenging, requiring thorough examination. Timely recognition and managemen

HIV-negative primary effusion lymphoma: a series of seven cases.

AIMS: Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a rare aggressive, human herpesvirus-8 (HHV8)-associated neoplasm of post-germinal centre B cell origin. It usually presents as a serous effusion in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients. PEL is rarely reported in HIV-negative patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: wWe report seven cases of HIV-negative elderly men diagnosed with PEL in a single institution. Clinical information and laboratory characteristics were collected. All patients were men, with a mean age of 76 years (range = 60-93) and presented with pleural effusions (n = 6), pericardi

Safety and Efficacy of Pharmacotherapy Containing the Second-Generation Integrase Inhibitors and Chemotherapy Drugs in AIDS-Related Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma: A Single-Center Retrospective Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research indicates that combining antiviral and anti-tumor drugs may lead to compounded toxic side effects and risks of drug-drug interactions. Our study aimed to investigate the safety and effectiveness of pharmacotherapy combining second-generation integrase inhibitors (INSTIs) with chemotherapy drugs in patients with AIDS-related diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (AR-DLBCL). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of newly diagnosed AR-DLBCL patients at the Public Health Clinical Center of Chengdu from February 2020 to May 2023. Improving the Sensitivity-Specificity Balance of Human Papillomavirus Testing on Self- and Clinician-Collected Samples in South Africa.

PURPOSE: Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing on self-collected samples may increase coverage of cervical cancer screening, but previous studies have observed lower specificity of HPV testing in self- versus clinician-collected samples. Here we investigate strategies to improve the sensitivity-specificity balance of a round of HPV testing on self-collected samples. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Women living with and without HIV, age 30-65 years, were recruited in South Africa. Self-collected vaginal samples and clinician-collected cervical samples were tested with Xpert HPV, an assay that detects the

When the mouth speaks first: oral Burkitt lymphoma unmasks HIV in a young male.

Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is an aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma frequently associated with immunodeficiency states such as HIV infection. This case report describes a 27-year-old male from the Brazilian Amazon who presented with multiple ulcerated gingival swellings, leading to a diagnosis of BL based on histopathological and immunohistochemical findings. The tumor showed a diffuse proliferation of monomorphic medium-sized lymphoid cells with a characteristic starry-sky pattern and immunoreactivity for LCA, CD20, PAX-5, BCL-6, CD10, and MYC, with a Ki-67 index >95 %. Visceral leishmaniasis in heavily pretreated multiple myeloma patients a case series of 17 patients from the Mediterranean Coast of Spain.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The introduction of novel therapies in multiple myeloma (MM) has significantly improved survival rates. However, their immunosuppressive nature predisposes patients to serious opportunistic infections, including visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Due to the rarity of VL in MM patients, specific management guidelines are lacking, and treatments are often extrapolated from those used for HIV-infected patients. This study aims to provide insights into the management of VL in MM patients. PATIENTS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 17 patients diagnosed with MM and VL
