Differential survival of Brazilian patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with and without HIV infection.

OBJECTIVE: Combinatorial antiretroviral therapy provided improvement of HIV patients' immune function and a decrease in the incidence of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is one of the most common NHL forms affecting HIV+ patients. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of HIV infection on the prognosis of patients treated for DLBCL in a reference cancer treatment center in Brazil. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was developed with patients followed-up at the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, in which 243 DLBCL patients (91 HIV+ and 152 H

Survival analysis over a 20-year period of a Brazilian cohort of blood donors coinfected HIV-HCV.

Among individuals coinfected with HCV and HIV, studies of mortality from non-hepatic causes have shown inconsistent results. The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of HCV and HIV co-infection to mortality from hepatic and non-hepatic causes in Brazil. This retrospective cohort study included blood donors from Fundação Pró-Sangue de São Paulo (FPS) who were followed from 1994 to 2016 to compare mortality and its causes between HIV-HCV coinfected individuals versus those seronegative for all tested infections. Records from the FPS database and the Mortality Information System

Microphysiological model reveals the promise of memory-like natural killer cell immunotherapy for HIV± cancer.

Numerous studies are exploring the use of cell adoptive therapies to treat hematological malignancies as well as solid tumors. However, there are numerous factors that dampen the immune response, including viruses like human immunodeficiency virus. In this study, we leverage human-derived microphysiological models to reverse-engineer the HIV-immune system interaction and evaluate the potential of memory-like natural killer cells for HIV+ head and neck cancer, one of the most common tumors in patients living with human immunodeficiency virus. Here, we evaluate multiple aspects of the memory-lik

Clinicopathologic Characterization of Kaposi Sarcoma on the Foot and Ankle: Analysis of 11 Patients Seen in Our Clinics.

BACKGROUND: Kaposi sarcoma (KS) has multiple clinical variants, and most frequently presents on the lower extremities. Anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) therapy has significantly reduced the incidence of KS. However, KS is still prevalent in both HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected patients. This case series analysis aims to reveal the clinical presentations, differential diagnosis, and treatment options of KS on the foot and ankle. METHODS: Eleven cases of KS involving the foot and ankle were retrieved from our patient database, and their clinicopathologic features were analyzed. RESULTS:

Epidemiology and etiology of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

As the most common non-Hodgkin lymphoma subtype, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) incidence patterns generally parallel that for NHL overall. Globally, DLBCL accounts for a third of all NHLs, ranging between 20% and 50% by country. Based on United States (U.S.) cancer registry data, age-standardized incidence rate for DLBCL was 7.2 per 100,000. DLBCL incidence rises with age and is generally higher in males than females; in the U.S., incidence is highest among non-Hispanic whites (9.2/100,000). Like NHL incidence, DLBCL incidence rose in the first half of the 20th century but has largely

Rare Co-Infection of the Lungs with EBV and Pneumocystis Carinii in a Patient with Kidney Cancer: a Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the primary agent of infectious mononucleosis, lymphoma, and naso-pharyngeal carcinoma, but rarely involves the lungs. Pneumocystis carinii is commonly found in patients with HIV infection and is not pathogenic when the host is healthy, but opportunistic infections can occur when the body is immunocompromised, causing pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP). It is rare for both diseases to occur in the lungs of the same patient. METHODS: Next-generation sequencing (NGS), laboratory examination, chest CT scan, electronic bronchoscopy, and pathogenetic examination w

A virus-induced circular RNA maintains latent infection of Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus.

Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) play important roles in host-pathogen interactions; oncogenic viruses like Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV) employ ncRNAs to establish a latent reservoir and persist for the life of the host. We previously reported that KSHV infection alters a novel class of RNA, circular RNAs (circRNAs). CircRNAs are alternative splicing isoforms and regulate gene expression, but their importance in infection is largely unknown. Here, we showed that a human circRNA, hsa_circ_0001400, is induced by various pathogenic viruses, namely KSHV, Epstein-Barr virus, and human cytomegaloviru

External validation of the PAGE-B score for HCC risk prediction in people living with HIV/HBV coinfection.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: HBV coinfection is common among people living with HIV (PLWH) and is the most important cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). While risk prediction tools for HCC have been validated in patients with HBV monoinfection, they have not been evaluated in PLWH. Thus, we performed an external validation of PAGE-B in people with HIV/HBV coinfection. METHODS: We included data on PLWH from four European cohorts who were positive for HBsAg and did not have HCC before starting tenofovir. We estimated the predictive performance of PAGE-B for HCC occurrence over 15 years in patients r

Exploring the Potential of Cytomegalovirus-Based Vectors: A Review.

Viral vectors have emerged as powerful tools for delivering and expressing foreign genes, playing a pivotal role in gene therapy. Among these vectors, cytomegalovirus (CMV) stands out as a promising viral vector due to its distinctive attributes including large packaging capacity, ability to achieve superinfection, broad host range, capacity to induce CD8+ T cell responses, lack of integration into the host genome, and other qualities that make it an appealing vector candidate. Engineered attenuated CMV strains such as Towne and AD169 that have a ~15 kb genomic DNA deletion caused by virus pas

An In Vivo Model of Human Macrophages in Metastatic Melanoma.

Despite recent therapeutic progress, advanced melanoma remains lethal for many patients. The composition of the immune tumor microenvironment (TME) has decisive impacts on therapy response and disease outcome, and high-dimensional analyses of patient samples reveal the heterogeneity of the immune TME. Macrophages infiltrate TMEs and generally associate with tumor progression, but the underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. Because experimental systems are needed to elucidate the functional properties of these cells, we developed a humanized mouse model reconstituted with human immun
