Background: Hospice care involves improving quality of end-of-life (EOL) care and respecting patients' preferences regarding EOL treatment. However, the impact of hospice care services on the utilization of life-sustaining treatments during EOL care in patients with life-limiting diseases has not been extensively studied. Objectives: This nationwide cohort study aimed to determine the impact of hospice care services on the utilization of life-sustaining treatments during the last 3 months of life among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Taiwan. Methods: From 2000 to 2018, we identified adu

BACKGROUND: The variation of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes shapes the risks of cervical cancer and these variations are not well defined in Africa. Nucleotide changes within the L1 gene, nucleotide variability, and phylogeny were explored in relation to HIV in samples from Botswana and Kenya.
METHODS: A total of 98 HPV-positive cervical samples were sequenced to identify different HPV variants. Phylogenetic inferences were used to determine HPV genotypes and investigate the clustering of sequences between women living with HIV (WLWHIV) and -women not living with HIV (WNLWHIV).
RESULTS

INTRODUCTION: Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a rare HHV8(+) non-Hodgkin lymphoma associated with HIV infection or other causes of immunosuppression. Large-scale studies describing the natural history of this entity are lacking.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: National cancer database (NCDB) was queried for patients diagnosed with PEL between 2004 and 2016. All patients age ≥ 18 years diagnosed with PEL were included. We excluded patients with multiple primary malignancies or lost follow-up. Kaplan-Meier and multivariate cox regression were used in the analyses.
RESULTS: Of the 219 PEL patients in

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer mortality remains high in sub-Saharan Africa, especially among women living with HIV (WLWH). Characterization of prevalent high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) types and immune function in WLWH with cervical abnormalities despite antiretroviral therapy (ART) can inform prevention strategies.
SETTING: Kampala, Uganda.
METHODS: From 2017 to 2020, we enrolled Ugandan women with cervical dysplasia detected with visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA). WLWH were required to be on ART >3 months with plasma HIV RNA <1000 copies/mL. Biopsies from VIA-positive lesions u

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is one of the leading malignancies globally and has taken third place in Namibia amongst women aged 15-44 years. Infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has been proven to increase women's susceptibility to developing cervical carcinoma. Sadly, Namibia carries a twin burden of HIV and cervical cancer. Namibians are aware of HIV/AIDS, but remain poorly informed about cervical cancer. Furthermore, among those who are aware of the disease, low utilisation of screening tests have been reported.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to explore perceptions and attitud

BACKGROUND: Incidence of anal cancer (AC) caused by persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has risen in the last years in men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV. There is consensus that this population should be screened for anal precancerous lesions, but the role of HPV DNA testing in AC screening programmes is still under debate.
OBJECTIVES: This study employed two molecular test to detect anal HPV DNA and compared assay performance and prognostic value for the diagnosis of histology proven high-grade intraepithelial anal lesions.
METHODS: MSM living with HIV attended the

BACKGROUND: The two oncogenic human gammaherpesviruses, Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), both downregulate immune surface molecules, such as MHC-I, ICAM-1, and B7-2, enabling them to evade T-cell and natural killer cell immunity. Both also either encode for human cyclin homologues or promote cellular cyclin activity, and this has been shown to be important for proliferation and survival of gammaherpesvirus-induced tumors. CDK4/6 inhibitors, which are approved for certain breast cancers, have been shown to enhance expression of MHC-I in cell lines and m

BACKGROUND: Invasive cervical cancer (ICC) is a serious public health burden in Nigeria, where human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains highly prevalent. Previous research suggested that epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) could play a role in detection of HIV-associated ICC. However, little research has been conducted on this topic in Africa where the population is most severely affected by HIV-associated ICC. Here, we investigated the association between ICC and EAA using cervical tissues of ICC-diagnosed Nigerian women living with HIV.
METHODS: We included 116 cervical tissue samples from

INTRODUCTION: Women living with HIV (WLHIV) are at an increased risk of developing cervical precancerous lesions and cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This study aimed at evaluating the prevalence of cervical lesions and high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) infection in WLHIV in comparison to the HIV-negative women undergoing opportunistic screening. In addition, these findings among WLHIV were correlated with the clinic-demographic factors.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among WLHIVs at a tertiary hospital and linked antiretroviral therapy (ART) center, while HIV-negative wome

OBJECTIVES: Automated whole brain segmentation from magnetic resonance images is of great interest for the development of clinically relevant volumetric markers for various neurological diseases. Although deep learning methods have demonstrated remarkable potential in this area, they may perform poorly in nonoptimal conditions, such as limited training data availability. Manual whole brain segmentation is an incredibly tedious process, so minimizing the data set size required for training segmentation algorithms may be of wide interest. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance

BACKGROUND: Public health emergencies can disrupt the provision of and access to essential health-care services, exacerbating health crises. We aimed to assess the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on essential health-care services in Kenya.
METHODS: Using county-level data routinely collected from the health information system from health facilities across the country, we used a robust mixed-effect model to examine changes in 17 indicators of essential health services across four periods: the pre-pandemic period (from January, 2018 to February, 2020), two pandemic periods (from March to Novemb

PURPOSE: Oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide and is the seventh most common in Botswana. Lack of improvement in oral cancer survival despite the availability of multiple treatment options may be due to the high prevalence of advanced stage at presentation. We identified risk factors for presenting with oral cancer at an advanced stage to facilitate interventions to reduce mortality from oral cancers.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted among individuals with biopsy-confirmed oral cancer at Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone, Botswana, between 2010 and 20

BACKGROUND: HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) are more likely to experience human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The persistent HPV infection is the major factor in the development of anal and oropharyngeal neoplasms. Data on the prevalence of anal and oral HPV in MSM are almost absent from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. We conducted a cross-sectional study focused on the prevalence of oral and anal HPV infections and the relationship between current anal and oral HPV intrapersonal infection in a Czech population of predominantly HIV-positive MSM.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV)-based primary screening guidelines are based on screening test performance and prevalence data generated in high-resource areas with low HIV infection rates. There is an urgent need for local data on infection and disease prevalence, as well as screening test performance, among both HIV-positive and HIV-negative South African (SA) women, in order to inform updated screening guidelines. Objectives. This study describes the baseline characteristics of participants in the cross-sectional phase of the multicentric DIAgnosis in Vaccine And Cervical Cancer Scre

OBJECTIVE: With increases in chronic disease, men with prostate cancer are likely to have at least one other chronic health condition. The burden and complexity of each additional chronic disease may complicate prostate cancer treatment and reduce survival. In this paper, we describe the frequency of multimorbid chronic diseases, HIV and depression among men in Soweto, South Africa (SA) with and without prostate cancer and determine whether the presence of multimorbid diseases is associated with metastatic and high-risk, non-metastatic prostate cancer.
METHODS: A population-based case-control
