Hepatitis C-positive Black patients develop hepatocellular carcinoma at earlier stages of liver disease and present with a more aggressive phenotype.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, mortality after a diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is higher in patients who are Black than in patients of other racial groups. The objective of this study was to clarify factors contributing to this disparity by analyzing liver and tumor characteristics in patients with HCC who have a history of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. METHODS: Records of patients with HCV and HCC at the authors' institution from 2003 to 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Race and ethnicity were self-identified. Imaging, laboratory, and pathologic features were compare

Anal cancer survival: a socioeconomic analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common variant of anal malignancy. Certain disease-related factors have been established in determining survival. These include tumour size, differentiation and nodal involvement. Other factors such as HIV status, human papillomavirus infection, smoking and socioeconomic disparity may have important roles, however few data are available on the UK population. We aim to correlate social deprivation and survival of anal cancer patients at a tertiary centre. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All consecutive cases diagnosed with anal squamous cell carcinoma a

Immunodeficiency and Thymoma: A Case Report on Good Syndrome, a Diagnosis Frequently Missed and Forgotten.

BACKGROUND Good syndrome (thymoma with immunodeficiency) is a frequently missed and forgotten entity. It is a rare cause of combined B and T cell immunodeficiency in adults. To date, fewer than 200 patients with Good syndrome have been reported in the literature. CASE REPORT We report a case of type AB Masaoka-Koga stage I thymoma which predated the evidence of immune dysregulation by 5 years, manifesting as bilateral cytomegalovirus retinitis, multiple bouts of pneumonia, and bronchiectasis in a HIV-seronegative 55-year-old man. Intravitreal ganciclovir was administered in addition to intrave

Self-collected and clinician-collected anal swabs show modest agreement for HPV genotyping.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Women with HIV/HPV coinfection and cervical lesions are at increased risk of developing HPV related anal cancer. Self-collection of anal swabs may facilitate HPV molecular testing in anal cancer screening, especially in high-risk groups, and yet it is not adequately studied. We evaluated level of agreement between self-collected anal swabs (SCAS) and clinician-collected anal swabs (CCAS) when used for HPV genotyping. We also described the anal HPV genotype distribution and HIV/HPV coinfection. METHODS: We performed a cross sectional study with participants from a visual-insp

Primary effusion lymphoma occurring in the setting of transplanted patients: a systematic review of a rare, life-threatening post-transplantation occurrence.

BACKGROUND: Primary effusion lymphoma is a rare, aggressive large B-cell lymphoma strictly linked to infection by Human Herpes virus 8/Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpes virus. In its classic form, it is characterized by body cavities neoplastic effusions without detectable tumor masses. It often occurs in immunocompromised patients, such as HIV-positive individuals. Primary effusion lymphoma may affect HIV-negative elderly patients from Human Herpes virus 8 endemic regions. So far, rare cases have been reported in transplanted patients. The purpose of our systematic review is to improve our und

Predictors of Colorectal Cancer Screening Among African American Men Living with HIV.

African American men living with HIV are at high risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). Screening to detect CRC is associated with a reduced risk of CRC mortality. However, little is known about CRC screening predictors in this population. This study examined the relation of self-efficacy, a potential mediator of screening that interventions could target, to CRC screening. It also investigated several variables that might identify subpopulations of African American men non-adherent to CRC screening recommendations. We report a secondary analysis on baseline data from a randomized controlled trial of

The association between protease inhibitors and anal cancer outcomes in veterans living with HIV treated with definitive chemoradiation: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of anal squamous cell carcinoma has been increasing, particularly in people living with HIV (PLWH). There is concern that radiosensitizing drugs, such as protease inhibitors, commonly used in the management of HIV, may increase toxicities in patients undergoing chemoradiation. This study examines treatment outcomes and toxicities in PLWH managed with and without protease inhibitors who are receiving chemoradiation for anal cancer. METHODS: Patient demographic, HIV management, and cancer treatment information were extracted from multiple Veterans Affairs databases. Pa

Incident detection of human papillomavirus - a prospective follow-up study among Tanzanian women with a focus on HIV status.

BACKGROUND: The causative role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in cervical carcinogenesis is well established; however, prospective studies examining high-risk(HR)-HPV acquisition among adult women in HIV-prevalent settings are limited. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study among women (25-60 years) attending cervical cancer screening in Tanzania. Cervical specimens obtained at enrolment and follow-up were tested for HPV. Participants were interviewed on lifestyle and tested for HIV. RESULTS: Among 3805 eligible women, 3074 (80.8%) attended follow-up (median time between the 2 examinations

Human immune deficiency virus among cervical cancer patients at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Ethiopia: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The discrepancy in cervical cancer incidence between women with HIV and women without HIV is highest in low and middle-income countries. In Africa, cervical cancer is the most common cause of cancer death. As a result, HIV-infected women are 6 times more likely to develop cervical cancer than uninfected women. In addition, HIV is associated with several triggering factors for cervical cancer, including multiple sexual partners, early sexual debut, economic status and substance use. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and associated factors of HIV among cervical cancer patients at

Immune Recovery Following Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in HIV-Related Lymphoma Patients on the BMT CTN 0803/AMC 071 Trial.

We report a first in-depth comparison of immune reconstitution in patients with HIV-related lymphoma following autologous hematopoietic cell transplant (AHCT) recipients (n=37, lymphoma, BEAM conditioning), HIV(-) AHCT recipients (n=30, myeloma, melphalan conditioning) at 56, 180, and 365 days post-AHCT, and 71 healthy control subjects. Principal component analysis showed that immune cell composition in HIV(+) and HIV(-) AHCT recipients clustered away from healthy controls and from each other at each time point, but approached healthy controls over time. Unsupervised feature importance score a

Multimodal Medical Image Fusion Based on Multiple Latent Low-Rank Representation.

A multimodal medical image fusion algorithm based on multiple latent low-rank representation is proposed to improve imaging quality by solving fuzzy details and enhancing the display of lesions. Firstly, the proposed method decomposes the source image repeatedly using latent low-rank representation to obtain several saliency parts and one low-rank part. Secondly, the VGG-19 network identifies the low-rank part's features and generates the weight maps. Then, the fused low-rank part can be obtained by making the Hadamard product of the weight maps and the source images. Thirdly, the fused salien

Plasma galectin-9 as a predictor of adverse non-AIDS events in persons with chronic HIV during suppressive antiretroviral therapy.

BACKGROUND: People with HIV (PWH) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) still experience an increased risk of morbidity and mortality, presumably driven by chronic inflammation, yet predictors of discrete or combinatorial outcomes remain unclear. Galectin-9 (Gal-9), a driver of both inflammatory and immunosuppressive responses, has been associated with HIV disease progression and multimorbidity. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether plasma Gal-9 levels are associated with the occurrence of specific non-AIDS events (NAEs) in PWH initiating ART. DESIGN: We performed a nested case-control study of PWH enro

New Insights into Ocular Complications of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection.

HIV/AIDS continues to be a major global public health issue, affecting multiple organs, such as the eyes. With the advent of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART), the incidence has dropped but HIV ocular complications still remain a major cause of vision impairment in HIVpositive individuals. Since modern medical interventions nowadays can change this previously fatal infection into a chronic disease and enable people living with HIV for relatively long and healthy lives, recent studies update the incidence of HIV-related ocular manifestations, which has reached 70% among HIV patients.

Lymphogranuloma Venereum-Associated Proctitis Mimicking a Malignant Rectal Neoplasia: Searching for Diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis-lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and an uncommon cause of proctitis. The diagnosis requires a high index of clinical suspicion, since the clinical, imaging, endoscopic, and histological findings can mimic multiple benign or malignant conditions like inflammatory bowel disease and rectal neoplasms. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 48-year-old Caucasian male with no significant previous medical history who was admitted due to the suspicion of a rectal neoplasia. He underwent an abdominopelvic computed tomograph
