Morphological features of the chiasma tendinum and its relation with surface landmarks and pulleys: a cadaveric study.

AIM: Chiasma tendinum (Camper's chiasm) is of great importance in the delicate movements and stability of the fingers and takes place poorly in the literature. This study aims to reveal the morphometric details of the chiasma tendinum in relation with pulleys and other relevant structures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Palm and 2nd to 5th fingers of 10 (6 male, 4 female) formalin fixed cadavers were used bilaterally. After determining the superficial reference points on the fingers, the skin and the tendon sheath were incised, and then measurements of chiasma tendinum and related tendons were perfor

Extensor Tendon Rupture Due to Advanced Kienböck's Disease: Two Case Reports and a Review of Literature.

Extensor tendon rupture of the finger is a very rare complication of Kienböck's disease. However, advanced Kienböck's disease can cause an attritional rupture of extensor tendons due to displaced lunate fragment. An extensor tendon of the thumb is frequently damaged in the distal radial fracture, and an extensor tendon of the fifth finger is mainly ruptured in arthritis of distal radio-ulnar joint. On the other hand, the extensor tendons of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers are usually ruptured in advanced Kienböck's disease. We report two elderly patients diagnosed with advanced Kienböck's disease

Histological analysis of ACL reconstruction failures due to synthetic-ACL (LARS) ruptures.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction is an established surgical procedure. Synthetic ligaments represent an option for ACL reconstruction. Their popularity declined for the raising concerns due to re-ruptures, knee synovitis and early arthritis related to I and II generation artificial ligaments. The introduction of a III generation synthetic ligament (Ligament Advanced Reinforcement System-LARS) permitted renewed interest in the adoption of this kind of graft. Main purpose of our study was to describe the histological findings on samples obtained from a consecutive se

Results of Surgical Management of Achilles Tendon Rupture Using the Modified Lindholm Procedure.

Objectives Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) in adults often results from sporting activities, especially in young adults. There is no consensus in the literature on the best treatment approach in the treatment of these ruptures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical long-term results of the augmented ATR repair using the modified Lindholm procedure (MLP). Methods Patients who underwent MLP due to ATR in the orthopedics and traumatology clinic of our hospital between 2007 and 2014 were retrospectively evaluated. Medical history of the patients was noted, and preoperative physica

Relative and Absolute Risk of Tendon Rupture with Fluoroquinolone and Concomitant Fluoroquinolone/Corticosteroid Therapy: Population-Based Nested Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Tendon rupture can result from fluoroquinolone exposure. The objective of this study was to quantify relative and absolute risk and determine how risk is affected by timing of exposure. METHODS: The UK Health Improvement Network primary care database was used to perform a nested case-control study measuring the association between fluoroquinolone exposure and tendon rupture. Adults with tendon rupture were matched on age, sex, general practice and calendar time to four controls selected from a cohort prescribed systemic fluoroquinolone or co-amoxiclav antibiotics. Th

Spontaneous simultaneous bilateral patellar tendon rupture.

Bilateral patellar tendon rupture is an extremely rare occurrence, especially in otherwise healthy individuals without systemic disease. The authors report the case of a man who presented with simultaneous, spontaneous bilateral rupture of his patellar tendons. He had a history of unilateral patellar tendinopathy but no other predisposing risk factors such as steroid or fluoroquinolone use. He underwent surgical repair and following intensive rehabilitation, he returned to baseline physical activity 6 months post injury.

Spontaneous Rupture of Multiple Tendons in the Lower Extremity Following the Diagnosis of Lyme Disease.

Over a time frame of less than 1 year, a 23-year-old competitive horseback rider experienced a midsubstance tear of both the tibialis anterior and extensor hallucis longus tendons without inciting injury. It was after the second spontaneous tear that the patient's recent diagnosis of Lyme disease became the likely culprit. Often, patients with chronic Lyme disease present with an elaborate clinical picture that can mimic many more common diagnoses such as septic arthritis, transient synovitis, ligamentous sprain, and various other traumatic injuries. Interposition Tendon Graft and Tension in the Repair of Closed Rupture of the Flexor Digitorum Profundus in Zone III or IV.

We report the results of interposition tendon grafts using the ipsilateral palmaris longus tendon in 12 patients with closed flexor digitorum profundus tendon ruptures in zone III or IV of 14 digits between June 2006 and October 2015. Before surgery, 2 patients were diagnosed with closed tendon ruptures that occurred after nonunion of hamate hook fractures. The other 10 patients were diagnosed with spontaneous tendon ruptures of unknown cause. In 2 of the 10 patients with spontaneous tendon rupture, the cause of the rupture was not found. In the other 8 patients, there was rough surface with d

Elevated urinary excretion of free pyridinoline in Friesian horses suggests a breed-specific increase in collagen degradation.

BACKGROUND: Friesian horses are known for their high inbreeding rate resulting in several genetic diseases such as hydrocephaly and dwarfism. This last decade, several studies focused on two other presumed hereditary traits in Friesian horses: megaoesophagus and aortic rupture. The pathogenesis of these diseases remains obscure but an important role of collagen has been hypothesized. The purpose of this study was to examine possible breed-related differences in collagen catabolism. Urinary specimens from Friesian (n = 17, median age 10 years old) and Warmblood horses (n = 17, median age 10 yea

Spontaneous and simultaneous complete bilateral rupture of the quadriceps tendon in a patient receiving hemodialysis: A case report and literature review.

The spontaneous and simultaneous rupture of both quadriceps tendons is uncommon and has rarely been reported in the literature. The current case involves a 43-year-old man with end-stage renal disease requiring hemodialysis for the past 20 years. The patient experienced bilateral knee pain and swelling and was unable to bear weight. Physical examination revealed bilateral quadriceps tendon defect above the patella and loss of active extension. Although plain radiographs of both knees showed no fracture or widening of the joint space, an inferiorly positioned patella was observed. Ultrasonograp

Spontaneous Rupture of the Extensor Pollicis Longus Tendon With Repair and Contralateral Prophylactic Decompression: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Ruptures of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon are known to occur primarily from local mechanical causes at Lister's tubercle. Other reasons for ruptures have been proposed including local steroid or even distant steroid injections that might have weakened the tendon, leading to rupture. There have been rare cases in the literature that describe ruptures without any known causes. Here, we describe a case with no known risk factors and with a spontaneous EPL rupture on one side and subclinical tendinopathy on the other. The patient had the EPL repaired on the ruptured side and subsequent

A Case Report of Isolated Cysticercosis of Biceps Muscle.

INTRODUCTION: Cysticercosis is more commonly seen in developing countries like India caused by larval stage of Taenia solium. Neurocysticercosis is more commonly seen than isolated muscle involvement. There are very few sporadic cases of isolated biceps muscle involvement, but most of them are managed medically. We are reporting an isolated case of cysticercosis of biceps muscle managed surgically. CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old male, security personnel by occupation, comes with complaints of painful swelling of the right arm for past 1 week. There was no trauma to the limb and no similar swellin

Presence of Bacteria in Spontaneous Achilles Tendon Ruptures.

BACKGROUND: The structural pathology of Achilles tendon (AT) ruptures resembles tendinopathy, but the causes remain unknown. Recently, a number of diseases were found to be attributed to bacterial infections, resulting in low-grade inflammation and progressive matrix disturbance. The authors speculate that spontaneous AT ruptures may also be influenced by the presence of bacteria. HYPOTHESIS: Bacteria are present in ruptured ATs but not in healthy tendons. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: Patients with spontaneous AT ruptures and patients undergoing anteri

Aging leads to inferior Achilles tendon mechanics and altered ankle function in rodents.

Spontaneous rupture of the Achilles tendon is increasingly common in the middle aged population. However, the cause for the particularly high incidence of injury in this age group is not well understood. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify age-specific differences in the Achilles tendon-muscle complex using an animal model. Functional measures were performed in vivo and tissues were harvested following euthanasia for mechanical, structural, and histological analysis from young, middle aged, and old rats. Numerous alterations in tendon properties were detected across age grou

[Acute rupture of the tibialis anterior tendon].

UNLABELLED: Tibialis anterior tendon rupture is a relatively rare injury, with diverse etiologies, that can cause significant deficits in the functionality of the ankle. These injuries are sometimes diagnosed too late, being in many occasions the alteration in walking the symptom that makes the patient go to the doctor. The six weeks will mark the limit between acute and chronic injury, requiring different therapeutic approaches, along with other parameters such as age, functional demand or concomitant pathologies. OBJECTIVE: To present two cases of acute rupture, with different etiology, the

Is there still a place for Achilles tendon lengthening?

Patients with diabetes and ankle equinus are at particularly high risk for forefoot ulceration because of the development of high forefoot pressures. Stiffness in the triceps surae muscles and tendons are thought to be largely responsible for equinus in patients with diabetes and underpins the surgical rationale for Achilles tendon lengthening (ATL) procedures to alleviate this deformity and reduce ulcer risk. The established/traditional surgical approach is the triple hemisection along the length of the Achilles tendon. Although the percutaneous approach has been successful in achieving incre
