BACKGROUND: Several methods for the treatment of acquired flexible flatfoot have been described.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We followed the outcome of calcaneocuboid distraction arthrodesis with lengthening of the lateral column prospectively in 20 patients (20 feet). The mean age of the patients was 55 (30-66) years and 16 were women. The lateral column lengthening was combined with percutaneous lengthening of the Achilles tendon and augmentation of the posterior tibial tendon in all patients. Fixed forefoot supination, hallux valgus, and/or symptomatic arthrosis, were corrected with arthrodesis

The authors have reviewed 20 cases of valgus flatfoot deformity in the adult, secondary to insufficiency of the tibialis posterior tendon, which were treated by triple arthrodesis from 1983 to 1998. The longitudinal arch was flat grade 3 in 18 cases and grade 2 in two. The rearfoot was in valgus in all cases. Dorsal flexion of the ankle was limited to 5 degrees with a short Achilles tendon in 10 cases Djian-Annonier's angle was 134 degrees on average. The talocalcaneal divergence was 32 degrees. Diffuse osteoarthritis was present preoperatively in 14 cases. Fusion of the arthrodesis was achiev

A short historical review of Haglund's deformity and its surgical treatment is presented. An analysis of the results obtained with the use of the Keck and Kelly osteotomy in conjunction with resection of the osseous prominence is then performed on 18 such procedures. Results have been gratifying, with no complications experienced with healing of the osteotomy and no recurrence of the deformity.

Twenty-three cases of claw foot with limited talocrural and subtalar mobility were the result of muscle contracture of the leg after tibial-shaft fracture. A roentgenographic study including arteriography was performed. It was concluded that the typical short cavus foot is due to fibrous contracture of the muscles in the deep posterior compartment caused by vascular damage, swelling in the deep posterior compartment, or severe muscle laceration. On physical examination the distance between the lateral malleolus and the Achilles tendon was shortened in comparison with the sound side in all case
