The incidence of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) was examined with the use of data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute. KS is a manifestation of the recent epidemic of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) that has occurred particularly among homosexual men. The incidence of KS in 1973-79 was found to be higher (0.29 male and 0.07 female cases/100,000/yr) than is usually cited for the pre-AIDS KS incidence rates. Collectively, the 9 SEER registries in the United States showed only a slight increase in the incidence of KS between 1973-7

A homosexual man with AIDS developed multifocal KS with involvement of the palate, larynx, trachea, and esophagus. Symptoms included dysphagia and gagging with resultant inanition. Short-course local radiation therapy effectively resolved the mucosal KS lesions in the treated areas. Other otolaryngologic manifestations included herpes stomatitis and oral candidiasis.

The hypothesis is presented that a human T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV) or a related agent produces a lytic response of T cells manifested by the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and a proliferative response represented by the adult leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) syndromes. The sequence or cascade of T-cell events following loss of T4 helper cells in AIDS includes reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus and a B-cell cascade of cytomegalovirus, resulting in Kaposi sarcoma in genetically susceptible persons, and of other intracellular agents (CNS viruses, M. avium intracellulari, T. gondii); opportu

The acquired immune deficiency syndrome is characterized by the development of multiple recurrent opportunistic infections or unusual neoplasms in individuals with no prior history of immune suppression. This report summarizes the thoracic diseases encountered in such patients before after death and the role of diagnostic techniques currently used in the evaluation of thoracic disease in 15 patients with this syndrome. Efficacy of treatment was determined by correlation with postmortem findings in all patients. Pulmonary disease was present in all 15 patients and necessitated 23 transbronchial

Acquired immunodeficiency and Kaposi's sarcoma are epidemic among homosexual men in the United States. We have identified three clinically distinct disease syndromes in homosexually active men: a syndrome of severe cellular immunodeficiency including infection with Pneumocystis carinii and other opportunistic pathogens, a syndrome of chronic benign lymphadenopathy without severe opportunistic infections, and Kaposi's sarcoma. All 46 patients which we have studied with these three disease syndromes shared a common immune abnormality, that being a reduction in the circulating T-lymphocyte subpop

Two hypotheses are presented to explain the recent outbreak of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and Kaposi's sarcoma in certain risk groups, particularly homosexuals, and the absence of these diseases from other segments of the population. According to the first, AIDS is itself an opportunistic infection. It causes disease only in individuals who are already immunocompromised by hepatitis B, cytomegalovirus, parasites, or other immunosuppressive factors. This hypothesis predicts that evidence of previous contact with the AIDS agent would be found in healthy individuals who have had th

The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) represents a new epidemic of major proportions. Risk factors include homosexuality, intravenous drug abuse, Haitian descent, and multiple transfusion in the presence of hemophilia A. The etiology of AIDS remains unknown, but there is increasing evidence implicating a transmissible infectious agent and/or multiple antigenic exposures inducing a loss of immunoregulation. In a high-risk patient, the features of weight loss, generalized lymphadenopathy, and fever should arouse suspicion of AIDS. Diagnostic confirmation includes demonstration of reduce
