Longitudinal study on quality of life following cervical cancer treatment in Botswana.

PURPOSE: This study longitudinally assessed the quality of life (QoL) in patients who completed chemoradiation (CRT) for cervical cancer in Botswana and compared the QoL for those living with and without HIV infection. METHODS: Patients with cervical cancer recommended for curative CRT were enrolled from August 2016 to February 2020. The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality-of-Life (QLQ-C30) and cervical cancer-specific (QLQ-Cx24) questionnaires, translated into Setswana, were used to assess the QoL of patients prior to treatment (baseline), at the end of tr

Oral HPV incidence and risk factors for acquisition.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated incidence of oral HPV infection, which precedes HPV-related oropharynx cancer. METHODS: In this prospective multicenter cohort of participants with HIV and demographically similar participants without HIV, oral rinse and gargle samples were collected every 6-12 months and tested for 35 HPV types (anyHPV), 13 of which were oncogenic (oncHPV). Kaplan Meier and Cox regression were used for incidence curves and clustered risk factor hazard ratios. Logistic regression was used to determine relative odds of same infection at next visit. RESULTS: The 1587 participants had a

Selumetinib in Combination with Anti Retroviral Therapy in HIV-associated Kaposi sarcoma (SCART): an open-label, multicentre, phase I/II trial.

BACKGROUND: Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is the commonest HIV-associated malignancy. It is caused by co-infection with Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV), which upregulates the MAPK pathway. The aim of the SCART trial was to identify a safe dose for the MEK inhibitor selumetinib in combination with antiretroviral therapy (ART) and to establish evidence of the combination's efficacy. METHODS: SCART was a prospective, single arm, open-label, multi-centre, phase I/II trial, recruiting from four UK centres. Eligible patients were HIV positive, established on an ART regimen ≥ 3 months, had HIV viral load ≤

Real-World Data on Outcome of Burkitt Lymphoma and Burkitt Leukemia Treated According to the GMALL B-ALL/NHL 2002 Protocol: A Tertiary Center Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Burkitt lymphoma (BL) or leukemia represents a highly aggressive B-cell malignancy requiring intense therapy. Although various different protocols have emerged, few real-world data exist for the GMALL B-ALL/NHL 2002 regimen. Comparative analyses remain challenging because of the disease's rarity. METHODS: This retrospective study examined the overall response rate (ORR), progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and toxicity in adult patients (pts) with histologically confirmed BL who received the GMALL protocol at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (2

Changes in the immune index before and after surgery in urinary malignancy patients with AIDS.

The immune index is an important marker of HIV immune function. Long-term clinical experience revealed that in urinary malignancy patients with AIDS who underwent radical surgery for malignant tumors, the preoperative and postoperative immune indices changed to different degrees, which affected patient prognosis. A total of 48 AIDS patients who underwent radical resection of malignant tumors in the Department of Urology of Beijing You 'an Hospital between 2015 and 2023 were included, including 25 patients with kidney cancer, 12 patients with bladder cancer and 11 patients with prostate cancer.

Management of polypharmacy and potential drug-drug interactions in people with HIV and cancer: insights from a 4-year multidisciplinary clinic experience.

BACKGROUND: People with HIV and cancer (PWHC) are often treated with different combinations of antiretroviral and oncology drugs, frequently associated with other co-medications; this significantly increases the risk of potential drug-drug interactions (DDIs). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A prospective observational study has been carried out from May 2020 to May 2024 to describe the management of therapies in PWHC in an outpatient clinic. RESULTS: 140 PWHC treated with 42 different antiretroviral and 59 oncology regimens were enrolled, resulting in the identification of 410 DDIs. Of these,

Applying the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills model to a video-assisted HPV intervention to promote self-screening uptake: a qualitative study in Western Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading source of cervical cancer in Kenya. HPV, like other sexually transmitted infections, is stigmatised, which hinders efforts to address the disease. Education and empowerment are crucial in combating HPV stigma and increasing screening uptake. We conducted qualitative analyses of a video-assisted HPV educational intervention in Kisumu, Kenya to determine its impact on women's knowledge, motivation and behaviour for HPV and cervical cancer prevention. The stigma-responsive video featured a group discussion with an individual describing her e

Cancer, HIV, and stigma: a portfolio analysis of grants funded by the National Cancer Institute.

PURPOSE: People with HIV (PWH) are at higher risk of cancer compared to the general population and experience worse cancer outcomes compared to cancer patients without HIV. One contributing factor to these outcomes is stigma, a social phenomenon that manifests across both HIV and cancer and compounds among those with a dual diagnosis. To assess the state of research, we conducted a portfolio analysis of National Cancer Institute (NCI)-funded extramural grants on this topic. METHODS: A keyword search identified 47 potentially relevant awards funded between Fiscal Years 2014-2024. Sixteen award

Genetic Profiling Reveals the Distinctions Among MTX-Associated DLBCL, EBV-Positive Mucocutaneous Ulcer, and EBV + DLBCL.

The WHO recently changed the outline of immunodeficiency/dysregulation (IDD)-associated lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs)/lymphomas from underlying IDD settings to an overarching framework and accommodates commonalities in histology, the involvement of various oncogenic viruses, and specific clinical/therapeutic consequences. A mutational analysis has been performed on post-transplantation and HIV-positive lymphomas, but not on other iatrogenic immunodeficiency (OII)-associated LPDs mainly caused by methotrexate (MTX) to treat rheumatoid arthritis. We herein conducted next-generation sequen

A neglected disease relationship-"association of human immunodeficiency viral infection and vulvar cancer": A retrospective, hospital-based, case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Vulvar cancer is one of the rare malignancies affecting women, but its incidence and younger age diagnoses are increasing through time. Because of its rarity, and low interest in medical society, limited research has been undertaken, especially on the risk factors. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of HIV infection and other factors on vulvar cancer. METHODS: A hospital-based, case-control study was conducted. Data were collected by Kobotoolbox and analyzed using SPSS version 27. There were 110 study participants with a 1:4 cases to controls ratio, and descriptiv

Bone Mineral Density in Black South African Women Newly Diagnosed With Breast Cancer Living With and Without HIV.

PURPOSE: Worsening bone mineral density (BMD)-and the corresponding increase in osteoporotic fractures-is an important and well-established source of morbidity and mortality in women receiving treatment of breast cancer, as well as those living with HIV. However, there are comparatively few reports on pretreatment bone health in women newly diagnosed with breast cancer, especially in predominantly Black populations, across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), and among individuals living with HIV. Therefore, we sought to characterize bone health in a cohort of Black South African women with and without H

Impact of Socio-Economic, Behavioural and Clinical Factors on Liver Disease Progression in Individuals With HIV and Hepatitis B.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Little is known about the contribution of sociodemographic and behavioural factors to developing liver disease in individuals with an HIV and chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) co-infection. We aimed to quantify the impact of these factors on incident liver disease in individuals with HIV/HBV receiving care in the Netherlands. METHODS: We used data from the Dutch observational ATHENA cohort combined with Statistics Netherlands. We included all hepatitis B surface antigen-positive individuals with HIV in care from 2008-2022. Severe liver disease (i.e., significant fibrosis (≥

Impact of HIV status on overall survival in head and neck cancers by anatomical site and stage: A multi-center cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: People with human immunodeficiency virus (PWH) are at higher risk for head and neck cancer (HNC) than people without HIV (PWoH), but data on the survival effect of HIV are scarce. The objective is to compare survival for PWH vs. PWoH diagnosed with HNC, stratified by anatomical site and cancer stage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The multi-institutional U.S.-based retrospective analysis included HNC patients (296 PWH and 29,875 PWoH) diagnosed between 2008 and 2020. Statistical analysis reported 5-year overall survival and hazard ratios (HR) for all-cause mortality by HIV infection and C

[CAR T cells in non-malignant diseases].

BACKGROUND: Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells specific for CD19 or B cell maturation antigen (BCMA) are now the standard treatment for relapsed/refractory B cell neoplasms. Because autoreactive B cells play a key role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases (AID), it has been hypothesized that B cell-specific CAR-T cells eliminate autoreactive B cell clones via a deep depletion of B cells and lead to a reset of the immune system. Initial pilot studies with CAR T cells against CD19 in rheumatologic and neurologic AIDs have confirmed this hypothesis and led to sustained drug-free remiss
