HIV-Helminth Co-Infections and Immune Checkpoints: Implications for Cancer Risk in South Africa.

South Africa has the highest HIV prevalence globally, often co-occurring with helminth infections in impoverished regions. The coexistence of these infections leads to immunological interactions, potentially enhancing oncogenesis by upregulating immune checkpoint molecules (ICs) among other effects. Notably, most ICs are overexpressed in cancer and correlated with its progression. Helminth infections trigger Th2-type immunity, increasing immunosuppressive M2 macrophages, regulatory T cells, and associated IC molecules. PD-L2 is reported to contribute to Th2-type immunity induced by helminth in

Clinical practice guidelines for hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance for people at high risk in Australia: summary of recommendations.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common form of primary liver cancer, the sixth most common cause of cancer death in Australia. With shifting aetiologies and a growing at-risk population, consistent routine surveillance recommendations are key to early detection of HCC and improved survival. We developed new evidence-based HCC surveillance guidelines for people at high risk in Australia due to liver disease and/or other risk factors. These guidelines were developed by a working group of experts in liver cancer control and included evidence reviews, synthesis and adaptat

Human Papillomavirus and Other Relevant Issues in Cervical Cancer Pathogenesis.

Cancer of the uterine cervix (cervical cancer) is a leading cancer among women worldwide, although its incidence has been reducing in many developing nations. In the majority of cervical cancer cases, the presence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is usually detected. However, a growing body of evidence currently considers that exclusive HPV infection may not be sufficient for cancer development. Apart from certain common risk factors for cervical cancer, like poor nutritional status and smoking, many studies documented an association with other viral infections, such as human immunodefi

Oropharyngeal cancer risk groups in the United States: a meta-analysis and SEER analysis.

BACKGROUND: Incidence of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) in the United States (US) has increased significantly due to human papillomavirus infections. This study characterized OPC incidence rates (IRs) by subgroups to identify high-risk populations for future screening efforts. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive analysis comprising a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies published since 2000 reporting OPC IRs in the US, supplemented by a primary analysis of data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program. From each source, we extracted cases and person-years to

Incidence and outcomes of anal and cervical cancer among adults with HIV in Latin America: a retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cervical and anal cancers disproportionately affect people with HIV (PWH). This study aimed to determine the incidence trends of and risk factors for these malignancies in PWH in Latin America. METHODS: We included PWH from the Caribbean, Central and South America network for HIV epidemiology (CCASAnet) who contributed person-time between 2000 and 2019. We calculated crude and age-standardized incidence rates, examining trends over time with Poisson regression. Adjusted hazard ratios were calculated using Cox proportional hazard models with

Immunocompetency Status and Its Association With Multicentric Lower Anogenital Tract Dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE: Multicentric, human papillomavirus (HPV) associated lower genital tract disease includes preinvasive and invasive lesions at multiple anatomic sites and can be synchronous or metachronous. Identifying patients with multicentric disease is crucial because of associated high treatment failure and recurrence. This study evaluates clinicopathologic patterns in immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients with multicentric lower anogenital disease. METHODS: Two-hospital retrospective study of 36 patients with histologic diagnoses of multicentric anogenital HPV-associated dysplasia was

Quality improvement report: Investigating barriers in HIV testing oncology patients to optimize HIV testing practice.

BACKGROUND: In 2010, we observed missed opportunities for earlier human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) diagnosis among people newly diagnosed with HIV attending our service. We reached out to clinical services with low HIV testing rates. LOCAL PROBLEM: In the oncology service, <5% of all patients seen were tested for HIV between 2010 and 2012. With the rationale of excluding HIV-related immunosuppression prior to prescribing immunosuppressive treatment, we aimed to identify barriers to HIV testing (Plan). METHODS: In 2013, we conducted the Investigating Barriers in HIV-Testing Oncology Patient

Viruses in gastrointestinal cancers: Molecular pathogenesis, oncogenic mechanisms, and translational perspectives.

Viral pathogens are one of the most significant causes of human carcinogenesis, contributing to up to 15-20 % of worldwide cancers. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is one of the most vulnerable human organ system to virus-mediated tumorigenesis as a result of frequent exposure to viral infections and various immunological processes. The present review aims to describe the dual roles of viral infections in the development of gastrointestinal cancers (GICs), with a focus on Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). HIV represents an onco

High risk HPV among HIV positive women with normal and abnormal cervical cytology in Bahir Dar, north west Ethiopia.

Cervical cancer is a malignant tumor that arises from the cells of the uterine cervix, primarily caused by persistent infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). Women living with HIV are at a heightened risk of infection with high-risk HPV types. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and type-specific distribution of HPV among HIV-positive women with cervical cytologic abnormalities in Bahir Dar, northwestern Ethiopia. A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among HIV-positive women in this region between January and March 2025. A total of 344 women were enrolled. Of these,

Prevalence and predictors of cervical lesions among women on ART in the Awi Zone, Northwest Ethiopia: facility-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Precancerous and suspicious cervical cancer lesions refer to abnormal changes in cervical cells that may develop into malignancy if left untreated. Women living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) face a significantly higher burden of AIDS-defining malignancies, particularly invasive cervical cancer. Their risk of developing cervical cancer is approximately six times greater than that of HIV-negative women. Despite the elevated risk, there is limited evidence in understanding the prevalence of cervical lesions among women living with HIV (WLHIV) who undergo cervical cancer scre
