Overall survival, poverty differentials, and mediating pathways among women with breast cancer: South African Breast Cancer and HIV Outcomes cohort.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer survival rates in sub-Saharan Africa are low. In a prospective, multi-center cohort study, we estimated 5-year overall survival rates, overall survival determinants, and mediating effects between socioeconomic status on overall survival among South African women diagnosed with invasive BC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients from 4 public hospitals were enrolled between July 1, 2015 and January 31, 2019. Survival determinants were assessed using Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for age, background mortality, and treatments. Socioeconomic pathway effects on overall

Identifying gaps in women's preventive health services for women living with HIV in Vermont.

BACKGROUND: Women living with HIV (WLHIV) in the United States experience higher rates of death from cervical and breast cancer and lower screening rates for both compared to women without HIV. These disparities highlight the need to better understand access to and uptake of women's preventive health services-particularly cervical cancer screening, breast cancer screening, and HPV vaccination. Most existing data on these services among WLHIV come from urban settings; therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting adherence to these preventive health measures among WL

Perceptions of integrating cervical cancer screening with HIV and sexual and reproductive health services: results from serial multiple methods studies among health workers and women in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer screening among Zimbabwean women is suboptimal. Integrating cervical cancer screening with HIV and sexual and reproductive health services can improve uptake. To inform optimisation of integrated models, we explored evolution of women's and health worker views on integration and cervical cancer screening. METHODS: Over three phases between Nov-2013 and Mar-2016, we collected serial multiple methods data from female attendees and health workers at four clinics providing integrated cervical cancer screening and HIV and sexual/reproductive health services. Using progr

HIV, HBV, and HCV Testing in Newly Diagnosed Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma: Experience From a Comprehensive Cancer Center.

PURPOSE: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common subtype non-Hodgkin lymphoma. HIV, hepatitis B (HBV), and hepatitis C (HCV) infections are DLBCL risk factors. DLBCL remains a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality in those with HIV. DLBCL treatments can also increase the HBV reactivation risk and acute liver injury in HCV. We assessed HBV, HCV, and HIV screening rates in DLBCL patients receiving systemic therapy in a comprehensive cancer system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed newly diagnosed DLBCL patients receiving anti-CD20 therapies between January 20

Anal Cancer Screening in People Living With HIV: A Pilot Study of Primary HPV Screening With Triage Use of p16/Ki67 Dual Stain.

BACKGROUND AND SETTING: People living with HIV, especially gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, are at increased risk of anal cancer. A recent randomized controlled trial showed treating anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) reduces anal cancer incidence, supporting development of screening programs. Given the transition from cytological to HPV testing in cervical cancer screening, HPV testing for anal cancer is worth investigating. However, because of its low specificity, additional biomarkers like the p16/Ki67 dual stain may improve specificity. METHODS: In

Primary disease of adipose tissue: When to think about and how to evaluate it in clinical practice?

Primary diseases of adipose tissue are rare disorders resulting from impairments in the physiological functions of adipose tissue (lipid stockage and endocrine function). It mainly refers to lipodystrophy syndromes with subcutaneous adipose tissue atrophy and/or altered body distribution of adipose tissue leading to insulin resistance, diabetes, hepatic steatosis, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular complications and polycystic ovary syndrome in women. Those syndromes are congenital or acquired, and lipoatrophy is partial or generalized. The diagnosis of lipodystrophy syndromes is often unrecognized,

The safety and efficacy of binimetinib for lung cancer: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer, accounting for a significant proportion of global cancer cases and deaths, poses a considerable health burden. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients have a poor prognosis and limited treatment options due to late-stage diagnosis and drug resistance. Dysregulated of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway, which is implicated in NSCLC pathogenesis, underscores the potential of MEK inhibitors such as binimetinib. Despite promising results in other cancers, comprehensive studies evaluating the safety and efficacy of binimetinib in lung cancer are lacking

The impact of immune dysregulation on the risk of malignancy in common variable immunodeficiency: insights from a multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID) represents a heterogenic group of primary immunodeficiencies (PID) characterized by impaired antibody production and susceptibility to infections. Non-infectious complications, such as autoimmune diseases, lymphoproliferative disorders, and malignancies, now significantly impact prognosis. Moreover, both hematologic and solid organ malignancies are more frequently observed in CVID patients compared to other PIDs. The risk factors for carcinogenesis in CVID remain largely unknown. OBJECTIVE: This multicenter study aims to characterize the cli

A Report of a Rare Case of a Solitary Ring-Enhancing Lesion in a Patient With Positive Toxoplasma Serology.

Ring-enhancing lesions are typically observed in patients with immunosuppression caused by underlying conditions such as HIV/AIDS or cancer. These lesions can arise from various etiologies, including infections, neoplasms, or vascular conditions. This case involves a male in his 30s from South America who presented to the emergency department after experiencing a seizure episode. He had no significant prior medical history and reported that he had not seen a doctor since childhood. A comprehensive workup was initiated during his hospitalization, including brain imaging that revealed a solitary

Access to and Utilization of Endocrine Therapy Among Breast Cancer Survivors in Botswana.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer (BC) is the most common female cancer worldwide, and the burden is increasing across sub-Saharan Africa. For women with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) cancers, endocrine therapy (ET) taken for 5-10 years can reduce the risk of recurrence by half. We explored experiences with ET and barriers to utilization among survivors in Botswana. METHODS: We recruited women with nonmetastatic disease from a survivorship cohort who had undergone mastectomy within 1-5 years for semi-structured interviews to explore experiences with treatment. This thematic content analysis focused on

Pacritinib inhibits proliferation of primary effusion lymphoma cells and production of viral interleukin-6 induced cytokines.

Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) and a form of multicentric Castleman's disease (MCD) are both caused by Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV). There is a critical need for improved therapies for these disorders. The IL-6/JAK/STAT3 pathway plays an important role in the pathogenesis of both PEL and KSHV-MCD. We explored the potential of JAK inhibitors for use in PEL and KSHV-MCD, and found that pacritinib was superior to others in inhibiting the growth of PEL cell lines. Pacritinib induced apoptosis in PEL cells and inhibited STAT3 and NF-κB activity as evidenced by reduced amount of phosphorylated

Hyperthermia and Exertional Heatstroke During Running, Cycling, Open Water Swimming, and Triathlon Events.

Few previous epidemiological studies, sports medicine position statements, and expert panel consensus reports have evaluated the similarities and differences of hyperthermia and exertional heatstroke (EHS) during endurance running, cycling, open water swimming, and triathlon competitions. Accordingly, we conducted manual online searches of the PubMed and Google Scholar databases using pre-defined inclusion criteria. The initial manual screenings of 1192 article titles and abstracts, and subsequent reviews of full-length pdf versions identified 80 articles that were acceptable for inclusion. Th

Feasibility and outcomes after dose reduction of immunochemotherapy in young adults with Burkitt lymphoma and leukemia: results of the BURKIMAB14 trial.

High dose-intensive or infusional intermediate-dose immunochemotherapy is highly effective treatment for Burkitt lymphoma irrespective of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. However, toxicities of these regimens are relevant, especially in older adults and elderly patients. The prospective multicenter BURKIMAB14 trial included four to six blocks of immunochemotherapy according to stage (localized: 1 and 2 non-bulky; advanced: 2 bulky, 3, 4) and age, with dose reduction in patients >55 years old. Dose-intensity of chemotherapy was reduced in patients ≤55 years old after achieving comp
