MRI-Based Morphologic Patterns of the Peroneus Quartus in a Korean Clinical Cohort: An Anatomical Study with an Illustrative Surgical Case.

Background/Objectives: The peroneus quartus (PQ) is an accessory musculotendinous structure of the lateral leg with variable origin and distal attachment. Although its anatomy has been described in cadaveric and imaging studies, the morphologic patterns encountered on routine ankle MRI remain clinically relevant. This study aimed to characterize MRI-visible PQ morphology in a Korean clinical cohort and to compare the observed patterns with previously reported anatomical variants. An illustrative surgically treated case was also reviewed. Methods: Three hundred ankle MRI examinations obtained b

Metabolic and Immunometabolic Neuroprotection in Glaucoma: Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Neuroinflammation, and Emerging Therapeutic Strategies.

Glaucoma is increasingly recognized as a multifactorial neurodegenerative optic neuropathy in which intraocular pressure (IOP) is one of several stress amplifiers rather than a sufficient etiological explanation. Vascular dysregulation, mitochondrial and metabolic vulnerability, oxidative stress, excitotoxicity, glial dysregulation, and persistent neuroimmune activation can converge on retinal ganglion cell (RGC) and optic nerve injury. This broader framework is particularly relevant to normal-tension glaucoma (NTG), which represents a large proportion of primary open-angle glaucoma in Asian p

Cilastatin Protects Against Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathy via the FKBP51/DPEP1 Axis: Confocal Insights into Protein Dynamics.

Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neuroinflammation is a hallmark feature of oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy (OIPN), a dose-limiting side effect with poorly understood molecular mechanisms. In this study, we investigated the protective potential of cilastatin (CIL), a dipeptidase 1 (DPEP1) inhibitor, while elucidating the regulatory roles of FK506-binding protein 51 (FKBP51) and DPEP1 in OIPN pathogenesis. Behavioral allodynia was evaluated using the acetone test in an oxaliplatin (OxPt) rat model. Lumbar DRGs were imaged via advanced confocal microscopy (Zeiss LSM980 Airyscan 2, Zeiss, Obe

Endocytosis and Endocytic Neurotrophin Signaling in Developing Spiral Ganglion Neurons.

Spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) relay auditory information from cochlear sensory cells to the central nervous system (CNS). During development, neurotrophins (NTs) secreted by sensory and supporting cells promote SGN dendrite outgrowth. In injury models, exogenous NTs have been used to stimulate SGN regeneration after damage. Following ligand binding, NT-Trk receptor complexes are internalized and may undergo recycling or degradation, or remain intracellular as "signaling endosomes" that can be retrogradely transported to the soma to influence gene expression, survival, and neuritogenesis. Impact of Insulin Resistance on Retinal Ganglion Cell Layer Structures: Findings from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Background/Objectives: Hyperinsulinaemia reflects compensatory systemic insulin resistance and may indicate early metabolic-vascular dysregulation. We investigated associations between insulin dysregulation and the retinal neuronal structure, particularly ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness, using Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data. Methods: We analysed KNHANES's 2019-2020 participants who underwent spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and fasting serum insulin assessment. SD-OCT-derived GCL and retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness were

Neuroimaging in neuro-ophthalmologic emergencies with acute visual loss.

Neuro-ophthalmologic emergencies presenting with acute visual loss pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, with potential for irreversible vision loss if not promptly recognized. A comprehensive approach that integrates clinical evaluation with advanced imaging modalities is essential for timely diagnosis, prognostic stratification, and management. Magnetic resonance imaging remains the gold standard for demyelinating optic neuritis, enabling differentiation among multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associ

Robotic selective thoracic sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis: refined technique and anatomical variation.

Primary hyperhidrosis substantially impairs quality of life. Conventional sympathectomy risks compensatory hyperhidrosis through trunk disruption, whilst selective sympathectomy preserves the trunk while dividing preganglionic and postganglionic fibres. We describe a technique refinement and a previously undescribed anatomical variant. A 23-year-old man had severe refractory palmar, axillary, plantar and gustatory hyperhidrosis (SSDS 4) profoundly affecting his confidence, social functioning and mental wellbeing, despite conservative management. He underwent staged bilateral robotic selective

Distribution of doublecortin in the developing retina of birds: A comparative analysis.

The avian retina presents an elegant and highly accessible model for investigating the spatial and temporal dynamics of neurogenesis within the central nervous system. In recent years, the microtubule cytoskeleton has emerged not merely as a structural scaffold, but as a dynamic regulator of the transition of a morphologically homogeneous pool of multipotent progenitor cells to postmitotic neurons. Doublecortin (DCX) is a microtubule-associated protein broadly recognized for its fundamental roles in neuronal migration, differentiation, and structural plasticity within the developing nervous sy

Retinal Ganglion Cell Quantification for Evaluating Neurodegeneration in Mouse Models of Multiple Sclerosis.

Quantification of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss provides a sensitive and reproducible measure of neurodegeneration in mouse models of neurological  disease and injury. In experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a widely used mouse model of multiple sclerosis, inflammation of the optic nerve can lead to optic neuritis, axonal injury, and progressive RGC loss. Therefore, quantification of RGC survival provides a valuable readout of inflammation-mediated neurodegeneration and can be used to evaluate disease severity and neuroprotective interventions. Here, we describe a protocol for r
