Clinical infectious diseases : an official publication of the Infectious Diseases Society of America2023eng
BACKGROUND: In 2015, hepatitis C treatment with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) became free and widespread in Spain, significantly reducing hepatitis C-related mortality. However, health interventions can sometimes widen health inequalities. The objective of this study is to assess the impact of DAA treatment on hepatitis C-related mortality by educational level.
METHODS: We analyzed deaths from hepatitis C, unspecified liver cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, alcohol-related liver diseases, other liver diseases, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease among individuals living in Spa

BACKGROUND: Hematological malignancies have continued to be highly prevalent among people living with HIV (PLHIV). This study assessed the occurrence of, risk factors for, and outcomes of hematological and nonhematological malignancies in PLHIV in Asia.
METHODS: Incidence of malignancy after cohort enrollment was evaluated. Factors associated with development of hematological and nonhematological malignancy were analyzed using competing risk regression and survival time using Kaplan-Meier.
RESULTS: Of 7455 patients, 107 patients (1%) developed a malignancy: 34 (0.5%) hematological [0.08 per

BACKGROUND: Non-AIDS-defining cancers (non-ADCs) have become the leading non-AIDS-related cause of death among people with HIV/AIDS. We aimed to quantify the excess risk of cancer-related deaths among Italian people with AIDS (PWA), as compared with people without AIDS (non-PWA).
METHODS: A nationwide, population-based, retrospective cohort study was carried out among 5285 Italian PWA, aged 15-74 years, diagnosed between 2006 and 2011. Date of death and multiple-cause-of-death data were retrieved up to December 2011. Excess mortality, as compared with non-PWA, was estimated using sex- and age

We utilized computerized record-linkage methods to link HIV and cancer databases with limited unique identifiers in Pune, India, to determine feasibility of linkage and obtain preliminary estimates of cancer risk in persons living with HIV (PLHIV) as compared with the general population.Records of 32,575 PLHIV were linked to 31,754 Pune Cancer Registry records (1996-2008) using a probabilistic-matching algorithm. Cancer risk was estimated by calculating standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) in the early (4-27 months after HIV registration), late (28-60 months), and overall (4-60 months) inciden

BACKGROUND: Current vital statistics from governmental institutions in Côte d'Ivoire are incomplete. This problem is particularly notable for remote rural areas that have limited access to the health system.
OBJECTIVE: To record all deaths from 2009 to 2011 and to identify the leading causes of death in the Taabo health and demographic surveillance system (HDSS) in south-central Côte d'Ivoire.
DESIGN: Deaths recorded in the first 3 years of operation of the Taabo HDSS were investigated by verbal autopsy (VA), using the InterVA-4 model. InterVA-4 is based on the World Health Organization 2012

BACKGROUND: For public health purposes, it is important to see whether men and women in different age groups die of the same causes in South Africa.
OBJECTIVE: We explored sex- and age-specific patterns of causes of deaths in a rural demographic surveillance site in northern KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa over the period 2000-2011.
DESIGN: Deaths reported through the demographic surveillance were followed up by a verbal autopsy (VA) interview using a standardised questionnaire. Causes of death were assigned likelihoods using the publicly available tool InterVA-4. Cause-specific mortality frac

National blood use patterns in sub-Saharan Africa are poorly described. Although malaria and maternal hemorrhage remain important drivers of blood demand across Africa, economic growth and changes in malaria, HIV/AIDS, and noncommunicable disease epidemiology may contribute to changes in blood demand. We evaluated indications for blood use in Namibia, a country in southern Africa, using a nationally representative sample and discuss implications for the region. Clinical and demographic data related to the issuance of blood component units in Namibia were reviewed for a 4-year period (August 1,

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively study the pathology of HIV seropositive in forensic autopsies.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Three hundred thirty five HIV seropositive cases, selected from 7,387 forensic postmortem inquests by law, were studied in Ramathibodi hospital between 2000 and 2010. The study topics were sex, age, cause of death, manner of death, and pathological features. Autopsies were done in 67 cases. The pathological features were classified into five groups, (a) HIV disease with infectious and parasitic diseases, (b) HIV disease with malignant neoplasms, (c) HIV disease with other specifie

INTRODUCTION: Although HAART has led to a reduction in overall mortality among HIV-infected individuals, its impact on death from specific causes is unknown.
METHODS: Twenty-two cohorts of HIV-infected individuals with known dates of seroconversion are pooled in the CASCADE collaboration. Causes of death (COD) were categorized into three AIDS-related and seven non-AIDS-related causes. The unknown causes were assigned a separate category. The cumulative incidence for each COD was calculated in the presence of the other competing COD, for the pre-HAART and HAART eras. A multivariate regression

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic characteristics of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) have not been examined in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area, a center of the HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic, for a decade, despite changes in AIDS-associated diseases after the availability of highly active antiretroviral therapies (HAART).
METHODS: With population-based cancer registry data for 1988-1998, the authors examined risk factors, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) association, incidence rates, and survival probabilities for 1752 patients with HL who were clas

Few large series compare lymphomas of the nasal cavity with those of the paranasal sinuses. We studied the cases of 58 patients, 34 males and 24 females, aged 7 to 92 years (mean, 57 years), who had lymphoma involving the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses. Thirty-three patients had diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Twenty-three were male and 10 were female, with an age range of 7 to 91 years (mean, 63 years); two were HIV-positive. Only 2 of 11 cases tested (one in an HIV-positive patient and one of lymphomatoid granulomatosis type) were Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive. Thirty (91%) inv

BACKGROUND: Most people with haemophilia who were treated with blood products before the introduction of virus-inactivation procedures were infected with the hepatitis-C virus (HCV). However, there is little quantitative information about the long-term effects on mortality of such infection.
METHODS: We carried out a cohort study of mortality from liver cancer and liver disease in 4865 haemophilic men and boys in the UK. They were treated between 1969 and 1985 with blood products carrying a high risk of HCV infection, and were followed up from first recorded exposure to Jan 1, 1993.
