A case of prepatellar bursitis in a man with chronic brucellosis is presented. Brucella abortus biotype 1 was isolated from the abundant yellowish fluid obtained from the bursa. Clinical and epidemiological data did not suggest a direct inoculation of the agent in the bursa. However, the patient mentioned occasional local trauma due to recreational sports, which may have constituted a predisposing factor. As determined by ELISA, there were higher levels of IgG against Brucella LPS and cytosolic proteins detected in the patient's bursal synovial fluid when compared with serum. Levels of proinfl

The use of arthroscopic techniques for excision of the pre-patellar bursa has become more common in recent years for the treatment of prepatellar bursitis. The current literature includes several case series that report few complications with this technique. We report the case of a 73-year-old male who sustained a low-energy patella tendon rupture 2 months after arthroscopic resection of the prepatellar bursa. We hypothesize that during arthroscopic excision of the prepatellar bursa there was an iatrogenic injury to the patellar tendon, which contributed to the subsequent rupture. Surgical rep

OBJECTIVE: To describe MR imaging characteristics and treatment options for prepatellar closed degloving injuries or Morel-Lavallée effusions. Imaging features are discussed that may aid in the distinguishing of this entity from "housemaid's knee" or prepatellar bursitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: MR images of four young wrestlers were reviewed by two attending radiologists and one fellow, and correlative clinical data were collected using the electronic medical database.
RESULTS: MR images in all cases showed a unilocular, T2 hyperintense prepatellar collection extending beyond the normal boun

Although the Morel-Lavallé lesion was originally described over 150 years ago and is a well known entity about the pelvis and femora, its occurrence in the prepatellar region has only recently been reported. While Tejwani et al asserted that prepatellar MLL and prepatellar bursitis can be readily distinguished clinically, the absence of prepatellar MLL from the literature until recently suggests that it may be under-diagnosed. Magnetic resonance imaging can be a helpful adjunct to the clinical examination in diagnosing MLL, primarily by confirming the precise extent of the fluid beyond the exp

BACKGROUND: The Morel-Lavallee lesion is a closed degloving injury most commonly described in the region of the hip joint after blunt trauma. It also occurs in the knee as a result of shearing trauma during football and is a distinct lesion from prepatellar bursitis and quadriceps contusion.
PURPOSE: To review the authors' experience with Morel-Lavallee lesion of the knee in the elite contact athlete to construct a diagnostic and treatment algorithm.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: Twenty-seven knees in 24 players were identified from 1 National Football League tea

This case report describes a 36-year-old African American male with cerebral palsy and bilateral slowly enlarging knee masses. He has 90 degrees fixed flexion knee contractures bilaterally. Although he has poor communication skills, he does not have discomfort while ambulating. He has developed massive bilateral prepatellar bursitis from chronic and repetitive injury to the region bearing his body weight while ambulating. As the result of a protective response, the bursa provides a cushion for the underlying bone prominences of the tibial tubercle and patella. This compensatory mechanism has a

Peripatellar lesions causing knee pain include cellulitis, bursitis, synovitis, septic arthritis and patellar osteomyelitis. We present here two cases of patellar osteomyelitis which were misdiagnosed as prepatellar bursitis. Operative treatment was required for these lesions. Patellar osteomyelitis should always be considered when treating a peripatellar lesion, although it is very rare condition.

A 61-year-old woman complained of a subcutaneous mass in her right knee. MR images revealed a well-defined subcutaneous mass in the prepatellar region, containing some fluid and foci of short T2. The lesion showed some marginal contrast uptake after an administration of meglumine gadopentetate (Gd-DTPA), consistent with prepatellar bursitis. The pathological specimen, however, revealed subcutaneous sarcoidosis involving the bursa.

One hundred and twenty-five patients with acute and chronic ulnar and prepatellar bursitis were treated. Treatment policy was developed. If the first puncture of bursa's cavity without injection of obliterating drugs is not effective, drainage of bursa with perforated catheter is recommended. This policy permitted to reduce period of treatment and avoid bursectomy.

We present a patient who had one episode of prepatellar bursitis and subsequently several episodes of arthritis of his right knee. Cultures of several punctures of his knee remained sterile, but the patient had been taking oral antibiotics on each of these occasions against our medical advice. Ultimately a diagnostic puncture revealed growth of Staphylococcus aureus. An X-ray demonstrated an osteolytic lesion of the patella, but no defect in the articular surface of the patella could be visualised. MRI demonstrated a communication between the osteomyelitic focus through the medial retinaculum

Septic bursitis is an infection that usually involves olecranon and prepatellar bursae. Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for around 80% of cases. However, information regarding bursitis caused by non-Staphylococcus aureus microorganisms (NSAB) is scant. In this paper we describe the characteristics of NSAB and emphasise differences between these and Staphylococcus aureus bursitis (SAB). A retrospective study of all cases with septic bursitis seen between January 1991 and June 1998 at one university hospital was conducted. Only cases in which bursal fluid culture yielded growth of a microor

Osteomyelitis of the patella is an uncommon infection that is primarily a disease of childhood. The diagnosis frequently is delayed because of its rarity and variable presentation, which may be acute with systemic signs or insidious with mild local signs. The diagnosis should be considered in patients with persistent peripatellar pain and swelling, cellulitis, septic prepatellar bursitis, and septic arthritis of the knee that does not respond to standard treatment. Treatment is identical to the treatment of osteomyelitis at other locations. The outcome is favorable in the child regarding range

Elbow and knee bursitis is common in both athletes and nonathletes and has three basic presentations: acute, chronic nonseptic, and chronic infected. Most acute swellings occur after trauma and can be treated with early aspiration, compression, and padding. Chronic, nonseptic bursitis can usually be treated with conservative therapy and, occasionally, aspiration or corticosteroid injection. Inflamed bursae should be aggressively evaluated and treated. Some may require aspiration and decompression, and oral or intravenous antibiotics should be started to prevent septicemia. Incision and drainag

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association2000eng
We treated 31 cases of olecranon bursitis and 19 cases of prepatellar bursitis. The average duration of symptoms before surgery was 1.1 years with a range of 3 months to 4 years. All patients had had preoperative aspiration and injection of cortisone. Patients underwent an arthroscopic bursal resection, removing all the bursal sack that could be seen. The results indicated that 86% of patients after olecranon bursectomy had no pain whatsoever. In the patients with prepatellar bursitis, 66% had no pain whatsoever, but we did note some residual tenderness in 24% of the patients, and 10% had pain

In patients with septic bursitis the indications for admission and surgical intervention remain unclear, and practice has varied widely. The effectiveness of a conservative outpatient based approach was assessed by an outcome study in a prospective case series. Consecutive patients attending an emergency department with acute swelling of the olecranon or prepatellar bursa were managed according to a structured approach, subjective and objective outcomes being assessed after two to three days, and subsequently as required until clinical discharge. Long-term outcomes were assessed by telephone f

OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical and microbiological characteristics of septic bursitis in those cases that required treatment at the hospital during the past 10 years in a northwestern area of Spain.
METHODS: The charts of all patients diagnosed as having septic bursitis at Hospital Xeral-Calde, Lugo, Spain, from October 1987 through September 1997 were reviewed based on published criteria and graded according to severity.
RESULTS: Sixty-nine patients diagnosed with definite and 6 with probable septic bursitis met the criteria for severe septic bursitis. Sixty-two were male (82.7%). The me
