PURPOSE: To investigate the prevalence of hip pain from labral tears and femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) in karate athletes using a statewide online survey.
METHODS: An anonymous electronic survey was distributed via Qualtrics to all registered members of a statewide karate organization who were a purple belt or higher. Basic demographic information was collected as well as belt level, competitive level, and information regarding hip pain and treatment for hip pain. Microsoft Excel was used to store and analyze data.
RESULTS: Of 180 respondents, 123 (68.3%) never had hip pain when practic

BACKGROUND: Septic arthritis (SA) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Delayed or inadequate treatment may result in joint destruction, osteomyelitis and sepsis. Like other types of infection, the causative agents of SA may have changed over time. Early targeted intervention is important in cases of SA and can be achieved only by understanding the current trends in the microbiology of SA.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the trends in the microbiology of SA over the last two decades.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study including all patients 18 and older with culture posit

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is characterized by rapidly evolving shoulder and pelvic girdle pain with fatigue, weight loss, night sweats and elevated CRP and ESR. Giant cell arteritis (GCA) can occur in PMR and vice versa. Headache and scalp tenderness are typical for GCA. GCA may be complicated by visual loss or by strokes.Imaging, particularly ultrasound, is helpful for distinguishing PMR from similar conditions such as shoulder osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and chondrocalcinosis. Subdeltoid bursitis, biceps tenosynovitis and hip joint effusions are common in PMR. The diagnosis of GC

Iliopsoas bursitis is characterized by distension of the iliopsoas muscle bursa due to synovial fluid and/or hypertrophic synovium. Hip disease is usually associated with it, however, isolated bursitis is also present. Clinically Diagnosing iliopsoas bursitis can be difficult, and imaging is usually required to differentiate iliopsoas bursitis from other inguinal masses such as lymphadenopathy, hernias, and tumors. We present the case of a 45-year-old athletic patient who underwent diagnostic examination for recurrent right hip pain and a recent development (last 3 months) of a bulky right ing

BACKGROUND: Greater trochanteric pain (GTP) after total hip replacement is a common cause of residual lateral hip pain, regardless of the approach used. The goal of our study was to evaluate GTP after a direct anterior approach (DAA) compared to a posterior approach (PA) as well as the clinical outcomes of both approaches and answer the following: 1) What is the incidence of trochanteric pain after primary THA with two different surgical approaches? 2) What is the functional outcome of patients with GTP? 3) What proportion of patients with GTP resort to peritrochanteric injections?

Transthoracic and transesophageal examinations should be considered as mutually complementary. Transesophageal echocardiography is performed in cases of a justified need to visualize structures that are poorly visible or invisible on transthoracic echocardiogram. Primary indications for transesophageal echocardiography include an assessment of cardiac source of embolism, suspected endocarditis, suspected prosthetic valve dysfunction, an assessment of thoracic aorta and other vessels, an assessment prior to valvular repairs and closures of septal defects, intraoperative monitoring of cardiac or

Complications are agonizing and leave feelings of inadequacy, insufficiency, or ineptitude. For these and other reasons, complications are not frequently reported in the literature. But reporting of complications is not only cathartic, it can be illuminating. Once out in the daylight, complications can be categorized, quantified, parsed, analyzed, and dissected with the scientific method to yield insight to enable us to prevent complications that we can avoid. Technical innovations have demonstrated ability to solve current problems. Standardizing the reporting of complications allows comparab

BACKGROUND: Synovial cysts of the hip are relatively rare lesions comparing to other joints. Patients are usually asymptomatic, but in some cases symptoms such as pain and/or compression of vessels or nerve could be present. Purpose of the study was to define clinical features and optimal management of synovial cyst of the hip joint through an accurate review of the literature.
METHODS: We present three consecutive cases treated with three different therapeutic strategies: surgical excision, wait-and-see and needle aspiration. An accurate review of the literature has been performed to identif

OBJECTIVES: To assess visibility of the acetabular cup in total hip replacement and to determine the value of direct and indirect signs of iliopsoas impingement syndrome with ultrasound.
METHODS: Ultrasound examinations were performed by a single operator in 17 patients with iliopsoas impingement syndrome and 48 control patients. Cup visibility, contact between the cup and psoas tendon, and the presence of indirect signs of iliopsoas impingement syndrome were investigated in all patients. When the acetabular cup was visible, its size and position in relation to the psoas tendon were recorded.

BACKGROUND: Trochanteric bursitis (TB) remains a common complication after total hip arthroplasty (THA), with an incidence between 3% and 17%, depending on the surgical approach, with the posterior approach (PA) being relatively protective compared to the lateral approach. The purposes of this study were to determine the incidence of TB after primary THA, identify potential risk factors for TB, and examine the utility of different modes of treatment.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort data of 990 primary THAs performed in a single institution, including 613 PAs and 377 direct anterior approaches (

The iliotibial tract, also known as Maissiat's band or the iliotibial band, and its associated muscles function to extend, abduct, and laterally rotate the hip, as well as aid in the stabilization of the knee. A select group of associated injuries and pathologies of the iliotibial tract are seen as sequela of repetitive stress and direct trauma. This article intends to educate the radiologist, orthopedist, and other clinicians about iliotibial tract anatomy and function and the clinical presentation, pathophysiology, and imaging findings of associated pathologies. Specifically, this article wi

Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) is a term used to describe disorders of the peritrochanteric region. This constellation of conditions includes greater trochanteric bursitis, gluteus medius (GM) tears, and external coxa saltans or snapping hip syndrome. Tears of the abductor mechanism, more specifically gluteus medius tears, have recently gained a considerable amount of interest in the orthopaedic literature. Abductor tears were first described by Bunker and Kagan in the late 1990s. They used the rotator cuff as an analogous structure to describe the pathological process associated wi
